In Search of the Artistic Home

In 1988, Todd London wrote in his book The Artistic Home:

Artistic Directors are concerned with keeping artists in the theatre; they need to constantly renew their commitment to making their theatres homes for artists.

As one of the regional theatre movement’s founders, Zelda Fichandler, reminds us in her recent address to the Stage Directors and Choreographer’s Society:

We must deepen our commitment to create artistic homes for artists, that was part of our promise – not hotels, homes – and the artist must feel that the institution was created for them, to cradle their work, to put them at the center.
