The Arizona Performing Arts Summit is an exploration of the performing arts landscape in the southwest region of the United States. As part of its efforts towards making equitable grant awards, NEFA’s National Theater Project and its partners are hosting a day of information gathering and networking to expand the NTP Advisor knowledge base and make connections with the region. This day provides opportunities for NTP advisors to meet artists and presenters previously unknown to them “in their own home,” to forge connections that will allow them to understand the challenges faced by artists and presenters who are not in heavily resourced, primarily urban areas. For the participants, it is an opportunity to present the challenges and benefits of regional work, gain exposure to a national group of movers and shakers, and connect with old and new colleagues from the region.

The day includes a welcome and two discussion sessions:

1) Welcome by Quita Sullivan (New England Foundation of the Arts), Carlton Turner (Alternate ROOTS/Turner World Around Productions), and Christina Nafziger (Xico Arte Y Cultura).

2) Understanding the Landscape. The session will be moderated by Roberto Bedoya. Panelists: Daniel Banks (Institute of American Indian Arts/DNAWORKS), Denise Uyehara (Shooting Columbus Collective), and Kimi Eisele (Multi-disciplinary Artist). The questions to be discussed in this session are: What is the infrastructure that exists in Arizona and the Southwest; in terms of long term engagement with supporting artists, presenting, making work—what are the opportunities, barriers?

3) Producing and Presenting. The session will also be moderated by Roberto Bedoya. Panelists: Gabriela Muñoz (Arizona Commission for the Arts), Ally R. Haynes-Hamblen (Scottsdale Center for Performing Arts), and Tim Wilson (Western Arts Alliance). The session is focused around: Service organizations in the region have the most access and are in the national conversations. How are they tapped into the needs of the artists in the region? What are the access points for artist to grow from the region and move to larger arenas? What are the challenges for artists/organizations to break that east/west coast dominance?

There will also be excerpted performances by Borderlands Theater and the Shooting Columbus Collective.
