The Playwrights' Center in Minneapolis presented the panel A Culture For New Work as a part of PlayLabs, their national festival of new plays, livestreamed on the global, commons-based peer-produced HowlRound TV network at howlround.tv on Sunday, 21 October 2012.

As new theatrical work continues to be created in such myriad forms and styles, how do we most effectively look and talk critically about these plays? When it comes to dramaturgical investigation during the development process, who is best to lead those conversations, and what methodologies should be used to explore the text in order to help bring a play to fruition? And once a play is in production, how do we talk about it thoughtfully and meaningfully? Have we shied so far away from authentic and rigorous response that our writers are receiving feedback that is so euphemized it's completely off the mark?

Panelists include:

  • Theatre Novi Most Founder and Co-Artistic Director Lisa Channer
  • Playwrights' Center Core Writer Christine Evans
  • Playwrights' Center Core Writer Marcus Gardley
  • Guthrie Theater Senior Dramaturg Michael Lupu
  • Director and Playwrights' Center Core Writer Marion McClinton
  • New York Theatre Workshop Artistic Director Jim Nicola
  • Playwrights' Center Associate Producer Hayley Finn will moderate.
