The State of the Rural Arts, A Conversation Hosted at Double Edge Theatre in Ashfield, Masachussets—Sunday 12 August 2012
Where have we been, and where are we going? This conversation presented a historical perspective on the place of the arts, and its cultural connections, and will discuss how traditional rural-urban, international, and disciplinary boundaries have expanded in recent years. Both in practice and in theory, what has been the status of the rural arts in post-war America, and what is its future? We progressed from such framing questions towards a discussion that considers how these ideas are manifest across the diverse landscape of rural America.
In keeping with the ethic of Double Edge's Conversations series, this event was streamed and archived online and will evolve more as a community discussion than a formal panel.
The conversation was moderated by Katharine Pearson Criss, Vice President of the Center for Rural Strategies, and featured opening remarks by five individuals with a range of perspectives on this central question:
- Caron Atlas, Director of Arts and Democracy
- Stephen Gong, Executive Director of the Center for Asian American Media
- Matthew Fluharty, Director of Art of the Rural
- Carlos Uriona, Actor and Ensemble Leader, Double Edge Theatre
- Nikiko Masumoto, an agrarian artist and writer.
