Martin Puchner takes us on a remarkable journey around the world to reveal how over 4,000 years of story-telling and literature have shaped history and civilization. The Segal evening will feature readings from The Epic of GilgameshThe OdysseyDiamond SutraPopol VuhOne Thousand and One Nights, The Tale of GenjiGoethe’s Conversations with Johann Peter Eckermann, and Akhmatova’s Requiem with introductions by Martin Puchner. Eylül Fidan Akıncı, Stefano Boselli, Shane Breaux, Marvin Carlson, Tom Keever, Cory Tamler, Angie Tennant, and Alisa Zhulina will read the texts. Followed by a discussion with Martin Puchner, Frank Hentschker, and others.

Martin Puchner is the Byron and Anita Wien Professor of Drama and of English and Comparative Literature at Harvard University. His prizewinning books cover subjects from philosophy to the arts, his bestelling six-volume Norton Anthology of World Literature, and his HarvardX MOOC (massive open online course) have brought four thousand years of literature to students across the globe. The Written World: The Power of Stories to Shape People, History, Civilization was published by Penguin Random House LLC in 2017.
