a way to communicate, that 2016-06-24 12:40:33.7 is really the key. 2016-06-24 12:40:33.702 >> just additionally, I know 2016-06-24 12:40:40.734 many of you are figuring out how 2016-06-24 12:40:42.737 in the world do I communicate 2016-06-24 12:40:42.739 with deaf people? 2016-06-24 12:40:46.739 We communicate with you. 2016-06-24 12:40:46.741 Just ask us. 2016-06-24 12:40:46.742 Let us take the lead and we will 2016-06-24 12:40:52.739 lead you through this process. 2016-06-24 12:40:52.741 >> another tip I think will be 2016-06-24 12:41:01.735 helpful is to have a deaf member 2016-06-24 12:41:02.736 of the production team or 2016-06-24 12:41:04.737 someone who is deaf from the 2016-06-24 12:41:08.737 beginning, for example with 2016-06-24 12:41:08.739 Howie. 2016-06-24 12:41:11.735 You brought him on as a 2016-06-24 12:41:13.738 codirector because you recognize 2016-06-24 12:41:17.744 that need from the beginning. 2016-06-24 12:41:17.746 You don't want to start getting 2016-06-24 12:41:21.78 into the production to realize 2016-06-24 12:41:21.782 too late it is -- to realize it 2016-06-24 12:41:25.78 is too late to bring someone in. 2016-06-24 12:41:25.782 >> I notice more and more as I 2016-06-24 12:41:32.866 work with hearing and deaf 2016-06-24 12:41:34.883 companies 2016-06-24 12:41:42.866 it's not like you have 2016-06-24 12:41:42.868 a design then you start adding 2016-06-24 12:41:42.87 people in. 2016-06-24 12:41:42.871 You start adding people in from 2016-06-24 12:41:46.97 the beginning. 2016-06-24 12:41:46.971 Both 2016-06-24 12:41:52.036 perspectives at the table, 2016-06-24 12:41:52.037 starting from the beginning. 2016-06-24 12:41:52.039 That is a great way to start 2016-06-24 12:41:57.045 that process, by adding it later 2016-06-24 12:41:58.032 on. 2016-06-24 12:41:58.033 You always have some complaints. 2016-06-24 12:42:01.033 Then the designers are lucky now 2016-06-24 12:42:05.122 you are ruining my original 2016-06-24 12:42:05.123 lighting design. 2016-06-24 12:42:05.124 If you start with that initial 2016-06-24 12:42:15.118 production meeting, just the 2016-06-24 12:42:15.12 concept and how we may be able 2016-06-24 12:42:16.116 to make it happen, it is a 2016-06-24 12:42:21.126 completely different 2016-06-24 12:42:22.124 collaborative process that 2016-06-24 12:42:22.126 becomes more positive and more 2016-06-24 12:42:22.128 smooth. 2016-06-24 12:42:22.129 That add-on concept makes it 2016-06-24 12:42:27.172 more difficult. 2016-06-24 12:42:27.174 >> one example I experienced 2016-06-24 12:42:34.218 before was they designed the 2016-06-24 12:42:39.239 lighting without even taking 2016-06-24 12:42:39.239 into consideration the cues that 2016-06-24 12:42:43.239 would have been appropriate for 2016-06-24 12:42:43.241 me. 2016-06-24 12:42:43.243 It would have saved a lot of 2016-06-24 12:42:49.239 time if they worked with me in 2016-06-24 12:42:50.241 the beginning instead of doing 2016-06-24 12:42:50.242 it after the fact. 2016-06-24 12:42:50.244 We lost half a day of tech just 2016-06-24 12:42:55.243 because of that. 2016-06-24 12:42:55.244 >> 2016-06-24 12:43:06.423 I want to touch on something, 2016-06-24 12:43:06.425 this idea of hearing people 2016-06-24 12:43:06.427 being it -- being afraid to 2016-06-24 12:43:11.498 communicate with us. 2016-06-24 12:43:11.5 Something we discussed is this 2016-06-24 12:43:15.578 inherent discomfort or 2016-06-24 12:43:18.617 nervousness that makes us feel 2016-06-24 12:43:23.681 a 2016-06-24 12:43:23.683 afraid to approach our deaf 2016-06-24 12:43:23.685 colleagues. 2016-06-24 12:43:23.686 Dissolving a little bit of that 2016-06-24 12:43:29.745 membrane. 2016-06-24 12:43:29.747 >> I was going to say dog and 2016-06-24 12:43:37.83 pony D.C. has done a wonderful 2016-06-24 12:43:38.871 job of being awkward and 2016-06-24 12:43:42.908 embarrassed. 2016-06-24 12:43:42.909 It is fascinating listening to 2016-06-24 12:43:52.041 my fellow panelists talking 2016-06-24 12:43:52.042 about, we shouldn't just add in 2016-06-24 12:43:57.158 . 2016-06-24 12:43:57.159 The show a few years 2016-06-24 12:44:08.289 ago, there 2016-06-24 12:44:08.29 was no intention of having a 2016-06-24 12:44:10.288 deaf performer in the show. 2016-06-24 12:44:13.333 We said we will figure it out, 2016-06-24 12:44:22.534 and I'm so glad we figured it 2016-06-24 12:44:24.534 out, but we are still in the 2016-06-24 12:44:25.547 process of figuring out what 2016-06-24 12:44:25.549 that means to work with deaf 2016-06-24 12:44:32.537 artists. 2016-06-24 12:44:34.538 There is so much packed into 2016-06-24 12:44:42.54 hearing privilege and the odd- 2016-06-24 12:44:48.539 ism that is built into the 2016-06-24 12:44:52.58 dominant culture of our world. 2016-06-24 12:44:57.58 I think we can say we really 2016-06-24 12:45:03.588 take it for granted. 2016-06-24 12:45:03.59 When confronted with that and 2016-06-24 12:45:09.583 when we start, and I really 2016-06-24 12:45:13.626 speak from a hearing person's 2016-06-24 12:45:14.625 perspective and to all the 2016-06-24 12:45:16.625 hearing people in the room, that 2016-06-24 12:45:16.627 we start taking that for granted 2016-06-24 12:45:20.663 and start getting nervous when 2016-06-24 12:45:20.664 we are confronted with, oh my 2016-06-24 12:45:24.669 gosh I don't want to embarrass 2016-06-24 12:45:24.67 myself and I don't want to 2016-06-24 12:45:26.664 insult anyone. 2016-06-24 12:45:26.666 Deaf people have been 2016-06-24 12:45:38.682 communicating in our culture for 2016-06-24 12:45:39.67 so long that I think that basic 2016-06-24 12:45:41.665 learning, that flexibility, that 2016-06-24 12:45:47.748 gestural Commit case and culture 2016-06-24 12:45:47.75 means. 2016-06-24 12:45:47.751 We have tried to look at 2016-06-24 12:45:57.771 our own 2016-06-24 12:45:57.772 learning process and be 2016-06-24 12:45:57.773 transparent with it, and to 2016-06-24 12:46:02.79 share it with artists that we 2016-06-24 12:46:03.793 are interacting with in our us 2016-06-24 12:46:07.869 some balls that in our in some 2016-06-24 12:46:10.874 balls. 2016-06-24 12:46:10.876 -- in our ensembles. 2016-06-24 12:46:14.915 I don't want to turn it into 2016-06-24 12:46:18.922 something it is not. 2016-06-24 12:46:18.923 Just knowing we can 2016-06-24 12:46:26.003 always asset 2016-06-24 12:46:26.005 share with one another and not 2016-06-24 12:46:29.046 always have to rely on our deaf 2016-06-24 12:46:33.04 colleagues. 2016-06-24 12:46:37.086 We have colleagues who have been 2016-06-24 12:46:39.134 a wonderful resource to us 2016-06-24 12:46:39.136 throughout this journey. 2016-06-24 12:46:39.137 I don't know that answered your 2016-06-24 12:46:43.207 question. 2016-06-24 12:46:43.209 >> I do want to piggyback on 2016-06-24 12:46:49.252 what you are saying. 2016-06-24 12:46:49.254 >> thank you. 2016-06-24 12:46:53.299 >> so you are saying something 2016-06-24 12:46:58.423 to keep in mind, that just being 2016-06-24 12:47:01.482 involved changed dog and pony 2016-06-24 12:47:04.587 D.C. entire community. 2016-06-24 12:47:06.63 The company started to pay 2016-06-24 12:47:10.672 attention to things. 2016-06-24 12:47:10.673 Things 2016-06-24 12:47:16.726 that you just think that 2016-06-24 12:47:16.727 is the way we communicate, that 2016-06-24 12:47:17.723 is the process and what we do. 2016-06-24 12:47:17.724 Deaf people pay far more 2016-06-24 12:47:27.838 attention to appropriate turn 2016-06-24 12:47:27.84 taking. 2016-06-24 12:47:27.841 There are a lot of advantages to 2016-06-24 12:47:33.89 bringing in a deaf artist. 2016-06-24 12:47:33.891 >> I would add onto that by 2016-06-24 12:47:41.986 saying if sometimes you feel 2016-06-24 12:47:41.987 uncomfortable, 2016-06-24 12:47:47.044 it may be because 2016-06-24 12:47:47.046 you are on autopilot. 2016-06-24 12:47:47.047 And you tend to start with your 2016-06-24 12:47:54.088 mouths and tongues and when you 2016-06-24 12:47:55.089 meet a deaf person you end up 2016-06-24 12:47:56.092 being a little shocked in the 2016-06-24 12:47:56.094 moment. 2016-06-24 12:47:56.095 You don't tend to use those. 2016-06-24 12:48:05.129 You feel like you have 2016-06-24 12:48:10.24 to shift 2016-06-24 12:48:10.241 back into fourth year now. 2016-06-24 12:48:10.243 You always think of starting in 2016-06-24 12:48:16.298 the first year, which is your 2016-06-24 12:48:16.3 mouth. 2016-06-24 12:48:16.301 Think about if you're able to 2016-06-24 12:48:25.431 change what you do and use more 2016-06-24 12:48:26.437 gestures, and use your eyes 2016-06-24 12:48:29.424 more. 2016-06-24 12:48:29.426 It feels like it is not 2016-06-24 12:48:36.509 appropriate to do it and it is 2016-06-24 12:48:39.592 different. 2016-06-24 12:48:39.594 It changes the company, it 2016-06-24 12:48:43.59 changes the feel of the group, 2016-06-24 12:48:45.637 it changes the dynamic and 2016-06-24 12:48:45.638 changes it for the better. 2016-06-24 12:48:45.64 You get more expressive actors 2016-06-24 12:48:51.677 and it is quite the benefit. 2016-06-24 12:48:51.679 >> this is an theater, this 2016-06-24 12:49:06.029 isn't radio, you should be used 2016-06-24 12:49:07.883 to this idea. 2016-06-24 12:49:07.885 >> one thing I would like to add 2016-06-24 12:49:07.886 on is the role of the 2016-06-24 12:49:07.888 interpreters in the process. 2016-06-24 12:49:07.89 Interpreters are allies and 2016-06-24 12:49:11.927 friends, but we can't rely on 2016-06-24 12:49:12.928 them wholly to be the leaders in 2016-06-24 12:49:13.931 the process. 2016-06-24 12:49:13.933 We need deaf people and hearing 2016-06-24 12:49:21.045 people to leave the process. 2016-06-24 12:49:24.053 Their role is to facilitate 2016-06-24 12:49:27.129 communication. 2016-06-24 12:49:27.131 Hearing that a lot of people 2016-06-24 12:49:33.259 have yet you that interpreters 2016-06-24 12:49:33.261 are the people you can go to to 2016-06-24 12:49:37.274 ask questions about sign 2016-06-24 12:49:38.259 language, but that leads to 2016-06-24 12:49:38.261 other issues. 2016-06-24 12:49:38.263 >> precisely. 2016-06-24 12:49:43.403 >> I know it is a very long and 2016-06-24 12:49:49.519 complicated relationship between 2016-06-24 12:49:52.552 the hearing and the deaf with 2016-06-24 12:49:56.635 the interpreter being the 2016-06-24 12:49:57.646 mediator between that, but just 2016-06-24 12:49:57.648 a few
