2017-03-10 16:27:19.713 at war which we started several 2017-03-10 16:27:21.71 years ago. 2017-03-10 16:27:23.839 Is based on interviews with over 2017-03-10 16:27:23.84 75 women who served and deployed 2017-03-10 16:27:25.711 in recent combat and came back 2017-03-10 16:27:27.71 to tell their stories. 2017-03-10 16:27:27.711 We developed this through a 2017-03-10 16:27:31.711 series of community 2017-03-10 16:27:31.712 partnerships, story circles, 2017-03-10 16:27:34.715 interviews, and created a 2017-03-10 16:27:38.758 mainstay to show for our 2017-03-10 16:27:38.759 production discussion where we 2017-03-10 16:27:47.758 have veterans and civilians 2017-03-10 16:27:47.759 talking to each other. 2017-03-10 16:27:48.754 It's really about raising 2017-03-10 16:27:52.755 visibility for women veterans 2017-03-10 16:27:55.755 who are often visible in the 2017-03-10 16:27:55.756 stories we tell, when we think 2017-03-10 16:27:59.807 about veterans, and trying to 2017-03-10 16:27:59.808 connect them with support 2017-03-10 16:28:01.805 services. 2017-03-10 16:28:02.815 >> I am a colleague of Megan's, 2017-03-10 16:28:11.855 Tara Mallen. 2017-03-10 16:28:13.853 16:28:29.883 They said I could devise 2017-03-10 16:28:29.884 anything I wanted. 2017-03-10 16:28:31.884 I brought in Helen Benedict's 2017-03-10 16:28:32.88 book "the lonely soldier," 2017-03-10 16:28:37.882 interviews with women coming 2017-03-10 16:28:38.882 back from Iraq and Afghanistan. 2017-03-10 16:28:38.883 The first day they were all 2017-03-10 16:28:41.926 talking, oh my god, so, I just 2017-03-10 16:28:47.967 don't even understand like why, 2017-03-10 16:28:50.095 a girl would even enlist. 2017-03-10 16:28:50.965 I thought, wow, we have a 2017-03-10 16:28:56.966 problem and we need to start 2017-03-10 16:28:58.966 addressing it. 2017-03-10 16:28:58.967 Flash forward, we end up with a 2017-03-10 16:28:59.966 grant to the Chicago trust to 2017-03-10 16:29:01.971 develop the program. 2017-03-10 16:29:01.972 I was the seed -- that was the 2017-03-10 16:29:07.045 seed moment for it. 2017-03-10 16:29:08.01 >> We are going around. 2017-03-10 16:29:10.007 Victoria: I am like to be a choreographer who 2017-03-10 16:29:24.106 is a citizen artist. 2017-03-10 16:29:30.115 I don't have veterans in my 2017-03-10 16:29:30.116 family. 2017-03-10 16:29:30.117 We have a very big VA Hospital 2017-03-10 16:29:37.103 in West L.A. 2017-03-10 16:29:42.105 I went over there to the combat 2017-03-10 16:29:42.106 rehab program. 2017-03-10 16:29:44.109 Gradually I developed a project 2017-03-10 16:29:50.102 that was what I called an action 2017-03-10 16:29:51.108 conversation. 2017-03-10 16:29:51.109 The idea was to bring a group of 2017-03-10 16:29:55.13 veterans into a room with a 2017-03-10 16:29:55.131 group of nonveterans. 2017-03-10 16:29:56.13 These are graduate students, 2017-03-10 16:30:00.171 dancer, choreographer's at UCLA 2017-03-10 16:30:04.172 where I worked, that we would 2017-03-10 16:30:05.172 have a productive conversation 2017-03-10 16:30:06.174 both insuring certain 2017-03-10 16:30:08.18 experiences of our training and 2017-03-10 16:30:08.181 physicality, but also with so 2017-03-10 16:30:11.173 much to learn from one another. 2017-03-10 16:30:14.179 The idea behind the action 2017-03-10 16:30:14.179 conversation was to move, and 2017-03-10 16:30:16.174 then talk, and then move, and 2017-03-10 16:30:18.176 then talk. 2017-03-10 16:30:19.18 And the moving always came from 2017-03-10 16:30:23.261 the talking and the talking 2017-03-10 16:30:23.262 always came from the moving. 2017-03-10 16:30:24.306 Gradually after 15 weeks, you 2017-03-10 16:30:28.356 made a performance. 2017-03-10 16:30:29.351 >> Great, thank you. 2017-03-10 16:30:31.366 >> Why am I so nervous? 2017-03-10 16:30:34.354 We're all here. 2017-03-10 16:30:37.353 I'm a classical belly dancer who 2017-03-10 16:30:44.385 joined the Marine Corps and 2017-03-10 16:30:44.386 certain Fallujah and Iraq. 2017-03-10 16:30:45.423 Through exit 12 I have been able 2017-03-10 16:31:00.425 to explore that any number of 2017-03-10 16:31:01.423 ways. 2017-03-10 16:31:01.424 We developed a repertoire work 2017-03-10 16:31:02.426 that talks about the military 2017-03-10 16:31:02.427 experience from all angles. 2017-03-10 16:31:04.425 When project is to bring 4 women 2017-03-10 16:31:08.472 together and have them go 2017-03-10 16:31:10.51 through their experiences and 2017-03-10 16:31:10.511 see what develops. 2017-03-10 16:31:14.511 I want to step away from the 2017-03-10 16:31:14.511 classical ballet period. 2017-03-10 16:31:16.51 The second is a project that is 2017-03-10 16:31:19.522 going to be done in the U.K. 2017-03-10 16:31:19.522 with U.K. ex-military developing 2017-03-10 16:31:24.51 a brand-new rite of spring based 2017-03-10 16:31:26.51 on the military experience. 2017-03-10 16:31:30.556 >> I am the artistic director of 2017-03-10 16:31:36.608 the Joe good performance group. 2017-03-10 16:31:36.609 A few years ago I got really 2017-03-10 16:31:40.644 tired of my own voice. 2017-03-10 16:31:42.634 I thought it would be 2017-03-10 16:31:45.637 interesting to interview my 2017-03-10 16:31:45.638 friends. 2017-03-10 16:31:45.638 The one to didn't die of AIDS, 2017-03-10 16:31:52.639 the ones who were left, about 2017-03-10 16:31:52.64 the challenges of being who they 2017-03-10 16:31:54.676 are and life. 2017-03-10 16:31:55.717 And, use those words verbatim to 2017-03-10 16:32:01.818 make a performance. 2017-03-10 16:32:01.819 I ended up with a series of 2017-03-10 16:32:08.811 performances. 2017-03-10 16:32:08.811 I had all these elaborate 2017-03-10 16:32:08.812 questions. 2017-03-10 16:32:08.813 Ultimately I had one question, 2017-03-10 16:32:11.806 which was, what do you do when 2017-03-10 16:32:15.851 you fall down to get back up? 2017-03-10 16:32:17.853 And, then morphed into the 2017-03-10 16:32:22.932 resilience project. 2017-03-10 16:32:22.932 A very smart curator friend of 2017-03-10 16:32:26.854 mine asked me to do that project 2017-03-10 16:32:27.861 with veterans, and I did. 2017-03-10 16:32:29.855 >> Thank you. 2017-03-10 16:32:31.886 >> I'm a playwright and I live 2017-03-10 16:32:39.895 here in Boston. 2017-03-10 16:32:39.896 Five years ago a good friend of 2017-03-10 16:32:39.897 my gave me a book, a holiday 2017-03-10 16:32:43.97 gift called "called to serve." 2017-03-10 16:32:47.969 It was a collection about 30 2017-03-10 16:32:50.974 interviews people who had 2017-03-10 16:32:54.076 different responses to the 2017-03-10 16:32:54.077 draft. 2017-03-10 16:32:54.077 Some resistant, somewhat to 2017-03-10 16:32:58.971 Canada. 2017-03-10 16:32:58.972 Some were drafted and went to 2017-03-10 16:33:04.973 Vietnam. 2017-03-10 16:33:05.97 He rather glibly said, why don't 2017-03-10 16:33:13.012 you make a play out of that? 2017-03-10 16:33:15.011 I said OK, and I did. 2017-03-10 16:33:18.013 So, the play has 4 vets in it, 3 2017-03-10 16:33:23.013 combat vets and a nurse who 2017-03-10 16:33:28.013 served in Vietnam as a field 2017-03-10 16:33:28.014 hospital. 2017-03-10 16:33:29.014 And, we premiered the play here 2017-03-10 16:33:33.013 in Boston, to get on the road 2017-03-10 16:33:35.013 for 3 performances in 2017-03-10 16:33:38.042 Massachusetts and Connecticut. 2017-03-10 16:33:39.013 Then we raised the money to 2017-03-10 16:33:42.012 film the live performance in 2017-03-10 16:33:44.012 Boston and it's now on video to 2017-03-10 16:33:49.012 the media education foundation, 2017-03-10 16:33:50.014 which is a bit of documentation 2017-03-10 16:33:54.057 to college is primarily. 2017-03-10 16:33:56.059 -- 16:34:14.111 city. 2017-03-10 16:34:15.138 Lester my creative partner and I 2017-03-10 16:34:23.222 created -- we had worked for 2017-03-10 16:34:25.223 several years collecting 2017-03-10 16:34:25.224 interviews. 2017-03-10 16:34:25.225 We created and produced a piece 2017-03-10 16:34:25.226 called a performance event, 2017-03-10 16:34:29.225 called "the prepared table, a 2017-03-10 2017-03-10 16:34:47.261 tables like this, 10 to a table. 2017-03-10 16:34:50.268 We fed them a feast of 2017-03-10 16:34:53.263 traditional foods from Iraq, 2017-03-10 16:34:56.266 Afghanistan, and a typical 2017-03-10 16:34:58.264 military base. 2017-03-10 16:34:59.269 Interwoven throughout the 2017-03-10 16:35:01.267 evening were videos of actual 2017-03-10 16:35:05.308 interviews with Iraqi and Afghan 2017-03-10 16:35:08.354 refugees, and U.S. military 2017-03-10 16:35:10.355 veterans who had fought in Iraq 2017-03-10 16:35:15.36 and Afghanistan. 2017-03-10 16:35:15.361 And live performances with 2017-03-10 16:35:16.356 hip-hop dancers, jazz musicians, 2017-03-10 16:35:18.365 acrobats, Afghan traditional 2017-03-10 16:35:21.363 singer group. 2017-03-10 16:35:22.356 >> Great. 2017-03-10 16:35:24.359 >> Hi. 2017-03-10 16:35:27.417 I am a theater maker and 2017-03-10 16:35:31.432 artistic director. 2017-03-10 16:35:35.431 Victoria, you reminded me that I 2017-03-10 16:35:37.438 had been doing this work before 2017-03-10 16:35:39.434 I started doing this work. 2017-03-10 16:35:40.434 In 2003, I was commissioned to 2017-03-10 16:35:45.508 write and direct a hip-hop dance 2017-03-10 16:35:48.515 theater piece. 2017-03-10 16:35:49.517 That's right around the time of 2017-03-10 16:35:52.57 the invasion. 2017-03-10 16:35:52.571 I created a piece called 2017-03-10 16:35:56.559 "scratch and burn," which was my 2017-03-10 16:35:59.564 response to our invasion of 2017-03-10 16:36:00.605 Iraq. 2017-03-10 16:36:01.624 I don't think I necessarily fall 2017-03-10 16:36:05.618 into any ink. 2017-03-10 16:36:05.619 I think that things unfold the 2017-03-10 16:36:08.607 way they do. 2017-03-10 16:36:10.609 Even sitting at this table, but 2017-03-10 16:36:14.607 I was contracted to teach a 2017-03-10 16:36:14.608 spoken word workshop, to Iraq 2017-03-10 16:36:19.682 war veterans. 2017-03-10 16:36:20.656 And we created, we ended up 2017-03-10 16:36:24.662 creating a theater piece called 2017-03-10 16:36:29.736 conscious on the fire, which we 2017-03-10 16:36:29.737 are currently touring. 2017-03-10 16:36:30.66 And have been awarded a night 2017-03-10 16:36:34.658 Grant foundation to create a new 2017-03-10 16:36:35.684 piece. 2017-03-10 16:36:35.684 I will let him finish and talk 2017-03-10 16:36:40.77 about it. 2017-03-10 16:36:40.771 >> Two for one. 2017-03-10 16:36:42.765 I'm Anthony Torres. 2017-03-10 16:36:44.769 I'm the executive 2017-03-10 16:36:47.765 director/co-founder/performer 2017-03-10 16:36:49.766 with the Combat Hippies. 2017-03-10 16:36:51.766 I'm also a social worker, and 2017-03-10 16:36:58.769 the school I went to talk this 2017-03-10 16:36:59.768 trauma informed curriculum -- 2017-03-10 16:37:02.766 taught this trauma informed 2017-03-10 16:37:06.808 curriculum. 2017-03-10 16:37:06.809 With the theater work that Teo 2017-03-10 16:37:11.882 taught us, it gives us a venue 2017-03-10 16:37:12.807 to share our stories, 2017-03-10 16:37:15.803 incorporate performance, and 2017-03-10 16:37:19.814 it's not only had a great impact 2017-03-10 16:37:19.815 on us, but also others. 2017-03-10 16:37:21.807 Our new project is to 2017-03-10 16:37:24.907 incorporate, to record oral 2017-03-10 16:37:26.911 histories of Iraqi refugees 2017-03-10 16:37:30.932 along with fellow combat 2017-03-10 16:37:31.937 veterans, and try to give a more 2017-03-10 16:37:36.933 well-rounded narrative to the 2017-03-10 16:37:37.948 experience of war and its 2017-03-10 16:37:41.941 impact, but also to resiliency 2017-03-10 16:37:41.941 and healing. 2017-03-10 16:37:42.937 >> Great. 2017-03-10 16:37:43.959 So thank you for that, and for 2017-03-10 16:37:47.935 indulging that 2017-03-10 16:37:47.936 -- that. 2017-03-10 16:37:48.977 You are exactly at 1 minute. 2017-03-10 16:37:51.975 It's a way to get everybody's 2017-03-10 16:37:56.977 voice in the room right from the 2017-03-10 16:37:56.978 get-go in a short period of 2017-03-10 16:37:57.976 time, and to hear from all of 2017-03-10 16:38:01.987 you. 2017-03-10 16:38:02.982 We will take a more relaxed 2017-03-10 16:38:02.982 approach to our conversation 2017-03-10 16:38:03.977 now. 2017-03-10 16:38:04.981 Yes. 2017-03-10 16:38:05.975 I find moderating panels that 2017-03-10 16:38:11.051 sometimes not everybody even 2017-03-10 16:38:13.019 gets to be in the conversation 2017-03-10 16:38:15.06 and that is an important way to 2017-03-10 16:38:15.06 start. 2017-03-10 16:38:16.062 I'm wondering if we could just 2017-03-10 16:38:19.069 toss around the question -- we 2017-03-10 16:38:22.06 have put this convening 2017-03-10 16:38:23.059 together. 2017-03-10 16:38:23.06 Clearly there is something 2017-03-10 16:38:26.06 unique about working as artists 2017-03-10 16:38:27.06 in communities with active 2017-03-10 16:38:30.062 military and veterans, and just 2017-03-10 16:38:34.06 wondering what are the key 2017-03-10 16:38:34.061 strategies for doing that work, 2017-03-10 16:38:37.108 what makes it different for you 2017-03-10 16:38:37.109 as artists. 2017-03-10 16:38:37.109 You might talk a little bit 2017-03-10 16:38:41.158 about that and you can get 2017-03-10 16:38:42.159 deeper into your specific 2017-03-10 16:38:42.16 projects that way. 2017-03-10 16:38:43.159 There are three mics around. 2017-03-10 16:38:46.158 So, we put this convening 2017-03-10 16:38:52.163 together because clearly there 2017-03-10 16:38:52.164 is something unique about 2017-03-10 16:38:55.186 artists coming together with 2017-03-10 16:38:57.186 veterans and active military, 2017-03-10 16:39:00.227 something we often think of the 2017-03-10 16:39:02.227 arts and the military as thing 2017-03-10 16:39:02.228 so live in different poles of 2017-03-10 16:39:04.224 the world. 2017-03-10 16:39:04.224 Clearly you have managed to 2017-03-10 16:39:07.223 bridge that pole. 2017-03-10 16:39:08.228 What are some of the key 2017-03-10 16:39:11.227 strategies you have used to 2017-03-10 16:39:12.238 bridge that pole, at some of the 2017-03-10 16:39:17.227 key learnings that have come out 2017-03-10 16:39:18.229 of your work specifically in 2017-03-10 16:39:18.23 this area? 2017-03-10 16:39:19.228 >> Helen. 2017-03-10 16:39:22.233 Food. 2017-03-10 16:39:24.226 So, if you feed people, they 2017-03-10 16:39:29.302 will come. 2017-03-10 16:39:30.241 Something happens when people 2017-03-10 16:39:30.242 are sitting around a table 2017-03-10 16:39:31.228 eating food. 2017-03-10 16:39:32.234 Civilians, military, atheist, 2017-03-10 16:39:36.225 Jews, Muslims, people who are 2017-03-10 16:39:41.3 strongly for or against the war, 2017-03-10 16:39:43.225 Iraqi refugees, Afghan refugees 2017-03-10 16:39:46.226 -- all these people live in the 2017-03-10 16:39:47.271 Bay Area -- military personnel 2017-03-10 16:39:50.27 are seated together at a table, 2017-03-10 16:39:50.271 sharing food. 2017-03-10 16:39:50.272 Because it's a table, there's 2017-03-10 16:39:55.272 protocol around that. 2017-03-10 16:39:55.273 You introduce yourself. 2017-03-10 16:39:55.273 You pass food. 2017-03-10 16:39:58.272 You maybe talk to each other, 2017-03-10 16:40:01.274 which is so different than 2017-03-10 16:40:01.275 sitting in an auditorium and 2017-03-10 16:40:05.277 everyone is facing the stage but 2017-03-10 16:40:05.277 you don't relate to each other. 2017-03-10 16:40:08.32 Relating to each other was an 2017-03-10 16:40:09.312 important part -- for some 2017-03-10 16:40:09.312 people, the most powerful part 2017-03-10 16:40:13.359 of the experience was who they 2017-03-10 16:40:13.36 sat with. 2017-03-10 16:40:13.361 They talk to each other and 2017-03-10 16:40:23.436 exchanged contact information. 2017-03-10 16:40:25.407 That's a really critical part 2017-03-10 16:40:29.408 for us. 2017-03-10 16:40:29.409 >> Can I tag on that? 2017-03-10 16:40:32.409 >> I had written down earlier 2017-03-10 16:40:37.485 the idea of the shared meal. 2017-03-10 16:40:38.409 One of the things we were doing 2017-03-10 16:40:42.438 with women out more that I 2017-03-10 16:40:45.437 basically stole from the theater 2017-03-10 16:40:45.438 of war folks, which was an 2017-03-10 16:40:49.479 amazing template on how to use 2017-03-10 16:40:50.489 theater piece as the catalyst to 2017-03-10 16:40:53.484 the conversation was kind of 2017-03-10 16:40:56.481 making sure, really ensuring 2017-03-10 16:40:59.522 that the audience was 2017-03-10 16:41:01.522 intentionally comprised of both 2017-03-10 16:41:04.522 civilians and military folks so 2017-03-10 16:41:07.522 there could be a conversation. 2017-03-10 16:41:08.523 Our project -- Megan, when we 2017-03-10 16:41:15.525 developed it, we really wanted 2017-03-10 16:41:16.529 that Townhall to be a huge part 2017-03-10 16:41:16.53 of the experience and not just 2017-03-10 16:41:18.523 an add-on, like the people who 2017-03-10 16:41:22.535 stay on for the production, that 2017-03-10 16:41:23.522 really be a piece of it. 2017-03-10 16:41:23.523 When we were successful in 2017-03-10 16:41:27.523 making sure he was 50/50, the 2017-03-10 16:41:31.522 conversations that I rubbed it 2017-03-10 16:41:34.525 were really -- erupted were 2017-03-10 16:41:37.522 really stunning. 2017-03-10 16:41:38.522 To harken back to what was said, 2017-03-10 16:41:44.563 it's about bringing it back 2017-03-10 16:41:44.564 together and blurring those 2017-03-10 16:41:47.61 lines so we can speak to each 2017-03-10 16:41:50.659 other. 2017-03-10 16:41:50.659 >> Comment. 2017-03-10 16:41:56.658 I was a mental health Tech in 2017-03-10 16:41:59.655 the Army for 4 years, psych tech 2017-03-10 16:42:01.66 in the Miami V.A. medical center 2017-03-10 16:42:04.656 for almost 5 years. 2017-03-10 16:42:05.657 I hosted an open mic, I think it 2017-03-10 16:42:08.688 was 2013. 2017-03-10 16:42:09.688 When this project was presented, 2017-03-10 16:42:14.764 I thought with my personal love 2017-03-10 16:42:14.765 of writing that this is an 2017-03-10 16:42:18.693 untapped resource in the veteran 2017-03-10 16:42:18.693 community, or at least in my 2017-03-10 16:42:21.692 community in South Florida. 2017-03-10 16:42:22.696 I found myself going to every 2017-03-10 16:42:26.69 little poetry workshop and 2017-03-10 16:42:26.691 presentation, book reading, and 2017-03-10 16:42:31.766 when this opportunity came up to 2017-03-10 16:42:31.767 have a writing workshop for 2017-03-10 16:42:32.731 vets, I just felt -- using this 2017-03-10 16:42:36.733 as a tool can complement -- 2017-03-10 16:42:41.809 therapy and medication helps so 2017-03-10 16:42:41.81 many people. 2017-03-10 16:42:41.811 What else is there? 2017-03-10 16:42:43.735 If therapy is talking, talking 2017-03-10 16:42:48.736 his expression and there's other 2017-03-10 16:42:49.733 ways to express yourself. 2017-03-10 16:42:49.734 That's been a powerful tool and 2017-03-10 16:42:53.775 we try to encourage fellow vets 2017-03-10 16:42:54.775 to do that. 2017-03-10 16:42:56.774 It's been a great experience so 2017-03-10 16:42:58.773 far. 2017-03-10 16:42:59.773 >> You're asking about 2017-03-10 16:43:06.773 techniques. 2017-03-10 16:43:07.779 >> Strategies, learning, things 2017-03-10 16:43:10.776 you've done. 2017-03-10 16:43:10.777 Food is a strategy. 2017-03-10 16:43:16.778 Workshops. 2017-03-10 16:43:17.775 Trying to get as much into the 2017-03-10 16:43:20.818 table as we can here. 2017-03-10 16:43:21.814 >> I can tell you what not to 2017-03-10 16:43:23.821 do. 2017-03-10 16:43:23.821 I will preface this. 2017-03-10 16:43:26.817 In my 10 years of work I've been 2017-03-10 16:43:28.816 in this space, being totally 2017-03-10 16:43:34.818 honest, I felt like an imposter 2017-03-10 16:43:35.815 in both worlds, the artistic 2017-03-10 16:43:37.815 world and veteran world. 2017-03-10 16:43:38.818 I thought I could make it a 2017-03-10 16:43:42.91 little more authentic and a 2017-03-10 16:43:46.91 little more honest and a little 2017-03-10 16:43:46.911 more safe by making the work 2017-03-10 16:43:50.912 autobiographical. 2017-03-10 16:43:50.913 Most of our beginning works were 2017-03-10 16:43:53.943 experiences that happen to me or 2017-03-10 16:43:53.944 my unit or things we experienced 2017-03-10 16:43:56.943 or things people close to me 2017-03-10 16:43:58.944 experience that I had permission 2017-03-10 16:43:59.941 to use. 2017-03-10 16:43:59.942 When we started working with 2017-03-10 16:44:05.028 other veterans I had not met 2017-03-10 16:44:05.029 before, we tricked them into 2017-03-10 16:44:06.066 working with us. 2017-03-10 16:44:07.109 They were coming to do a writing 2017-03-10 16:44:12.185 workshop, they thought. 2017-03-10 16:44:13.166 They ended up dancing. 2017-03-10 16:44:15.176 Then they ended up performing. 2017-03-10 16:44:18.159 Looking back at 10 years and 2017-03-10 16:44:25.173 where I'm going next, this is 2017-03-10 16:44:29.231 the first time I felt I have 2017-03-10 16:44:29.232 developed the tools and 2017-03-10 16:44:29.232 techniques to approach a project 2017-03-10 16:44:38.231 the -- I don't want to say 2017-03-10 16:44:38.232 correct -- is OK with me, 2017-03-10 16:44:43.306 approaching a project from a 2017-03-10 16:44:44.234 place of knowledge, wisdom, with 2017-03-10 16:44:44.235 the tools and structure to 2017-03-10 16:44:50.278 actually do something that I can 2017-03-10 16:44:50.278 be proud of. 2017-03-10 16:44:51.277 I don't know if that helps. 2017-03-10 16:44:54.275 >> I'm thinking about timeline, 2017-03-10 16:45:00.275 and being really realistic about 2017-03-10 16:45:03.281 the time it takes to do 2017-03-10 16:45:03.282 something like this. 2017-03-10 16:45:05.281 We've heard throughout the day 2017-03-10 16:45:09.278 people talking about 2017-03-10 16:45:12.277 credibility, relationship 2017-03-10 16:45:13.277 building. 2017-03-10 16:45:17.318 In my experience -- we would 2017-03-10 16:45:17.318 have really successful workshops 2017-03-10 16:45:20.41 where you go and meet somebody. 2017-03-10 16:45:23.415 We feel like we're just 2017-03-10 16:45:23.416 scratching the surface. 2017-03-10 16:45:24.409 You don't know each other yet. 2017-03-10 16:45:28.413 Why would you tell me the truth 2017-03-10 16:45:28.413 about your experience unless I 2017-03-10 16:45:30.41 show up next time and I share a 2017-03-10 16:45:33.41 little bit more about myself, 2017-03-10 16:45:35.409 and then we have a relationship 2017-03-10 16:45:36.411 and we are building together and 2017-03-10 16:45:36.412 eventually our storytellers got 2017-03-10 16:45:39.485 to decide what they wanted to 2017-03-10 16:45:42.569 contribute and how they wanted 2017-03-10 16:45:42.569 to tell it, but there was a 2017-03-10 16:45:46.571 relationship there by the time 2017-03-10 16:45:47.569 we got around to a recorder, 2017-03-10 16:45:49.74 saying this will be in the show. 2017-03-10 16:45:50.568 That was a big learning lesson. 2017-03-10 16:45:54.57 We submitted it for a grant and 2017-03-10 16:45:54.571 we were like, we are on the 2017-03-10 16:45:56.569 grant timetable. 2017-03-10 16:45:57.569 It just did not happen like that 2017-03-10 16:46:01.612 and then we were like, let's 2017-03-10 16:46:03.611 circle back and figure out. 2017-03-10 16:46:03.612 It turned into like five years 2017-03-10 16:46:06.609 of getting off the ground. 2017-03-10 16:46:06.61 And it was worth it. 2017-03-10 16:46:08.61 And I'm also thinking about -- 2017-03-10 16:46:17.612 like I had done oral history 2017-03-10 16:46:17.613 projects, like what I call 2017-03-10 16:46:20.612 subcultures, before. 2017-03-10 16:46:22.611 For me, a lot of it was really 2017-03-10 16:46:24.616 honoring veteran culture, 2017-03-10 16:46:28.659 military culture as a culture 2017-03-10 16:46:31.709 that I didn't know much about, 2017-03-10 16:46:33.724 and owning my ignorance around 2017-03-10 16:46:34.713 that and doing a lot of 2017-03-10 16:46:34.713 education and asking questions 2017-03-10 16:46:37.711 when I didn't know. 2017-03-10 16:46:38.711 Just sort of entering the space 2017-03-10 16:46:42.71 like that, and building on the 2017-03-10 16:46:43.71 information so I could be a 2017-03-10 16:46:46.712 different kind collaborator and 2017-03-10 16:46:47.712 participant in the room. 2017-03-10 16:46:49.736 >> I think this work more than 2017-03-10 16:46:52.735 any, there's the importance of 2017-03-10 16:46:58.734 figuring out how to trust your 2017-03-10 16:46:58.735 own thinking and make your own 2017-03-10 16:47:01.734 mistakes, and it is the only way 2017-03-10 16:47:06.81 you kind of get to learn what 2017-03-10 16:47:06.811 there is to learn, you go 2017-03-10 16:47:09.746 forward. 2017-03-10 16:47:09.747 A couple things I thought about 2017-03-10 16:47:12.78 while doing it, and one is we 2017-03-10 16:47:16.862 don't have a professional mental 2017-03-10 16:47:16.862 health person present even 2017-03-10 16:47:19.862 though very intense things are 2017-03-10 16:47:19.863 shared. 2017-03-10 16:47:20.862 Making sure the reality of 2017-03-10 16:47:24.864 mental health professionals is 2017-03-10 16:47:24.864 clear and available in spoken 2017-03-10 16:47:27.865 and shared, but one thing -- I 2017-03-10 16:47:32.864 learned the hard way is to not 2017-03-10 16:47:33.863 have story exchanges in a 2017-03-10 16:47:35.868 traditional mental health 2017-03-10 16:47:35.868 facility, to actually do it in 2017-03-10 16:47:38.911 the VFW post, the retirement 2017-03-10 16:47:43.912 home, the events. 2017-03-10 16:47:44.909 Just because it's opening a door 2017-03-10 16:47:50.913 that we are not actually trying 2017-03-10 16:47:50.914 to open for that, right? 2017-03-10 16:47:52.91 Another thing was -- the power 2017-03-10 16:47:57.986 of listening, structuring it so 2017-03-10 16:48:04.117 the vets were helping each 2017-03-10 16:48:04.118 other, making that clear, and 2017-03-10 16:48:07.113 they know that, but to make it 2017-03-10 16:48:09.115 quite clear you are listening to 2017-03-10 16:48:09.116 this other one's stories, you 2017-03-10 16:48:12.17 are doing the buddy-buddy 2017-03-10 16:48:15.117 helping thing. 2017-03-10 16:48:16.116 And, so I think that was 2017-03-10 16:48:21.192 helpful. 2017-03-10 16:48:21.193 And, the demographics, I had a 2017-03-10 16:48:28.164 couple events that we had really 2017-03-10 16:48:34.212 key people who were in support 2017-03-10 16:48:34.213 of the project that could not 2017-03-10 16:48:34.214 come to a workshop because we 2017-03-10 16:48:36.211 would have too many non vets, 2017-03-10 16:48:41.212 and the people who came, 2017-03-10 16:48:42.211 everybody had to agree to 2017-03-10 16:48:42.212 participate as themselves. 2017-03-10 16:48:45.288 That was awkward to set up with 2017-03-10 16:48:49.324 the people involved. 2017-03-10 16:48:50.324 Our Congresswoman, that kind of 2017-03-10 16:48:52.366 thing. 2017-03-10 16:48:53.365 We are usually not having those 2017-03-10 16:48:56.371 conversations. 2017-03-10 16:48:56.371 Usually something is done with 2017-03-10 16:49:00.373 the staff. 2017-03-10 16:49:01.368 I felt like I needed the 2017-03-10 16:49:01.369 Congresswoman to agree to 2017-03-10 16:49:03.365 participate fully and deeply. 2017-03-10 16:49:04.364 The last one is just the 2017-03-10 16:49:07.365 importance for us, balance of 2017-03-10 16:49:09.367 attention. 2017-03-10 16:49:09.367 For me, I mean, to not -- it was 2017-03-10 16:49:17.467 important how deep the vets 2017-03-10 16:49:21.459 wanted to go and how little they 2017-03-10 16:49:22.46 felt they had space to tell the 2017-03-10 16:49:22.46 stories they were sharing. 2017-03-10 16:49:23.461 They went there sometimes very 2017-03-10 16:49:26.49 quickly, but the way they were 2017-03-10 16:49:30.489 invited and the way it was set 2017-03-10 16:49:30.489 up to be like, what is your 2017-03-10 16:49:32.488 funniest story, what's the 2017-03-10 16:49:34.538 longest way you had? 2017-03-10 16:49:35.532 -- wait you had? 2017-03-10 16:49:37.534 What is your buddy that you 2017-03-10 16:49:40.537 still stay in touch with story, 2017-03-10 16:49:42.533 that kind of thing, to really 2017-03-10 16:49:45.532 make sure that that's just 2017-03-10 16:49:49.575 embedded, integrated in the 2017-03-10 16:49:49.575 entire process. 2017-03-10 16:49:50.574 >> Yes to everything. 2017-03-10 16:49:56.575 I want to add another thought. 2017-03-10 16:49:59.577 It's a little hard to praarse 2017-03-10 16:50:01.615 quickly. 2017-03-10 16:50:02.614 I want to talk about resistance. 2017-03-10 16:50:06.616 Very often we think of 2017-03-10 16:50:06.617 resistance is a door closing. 2017-03-10 16:50:11.614 I think of resistance as an 2017-03-10 16:50:11.615 incredibly active form of 2017-03-10 16:50:13.616 participation, and that if you 2017-03-10 16:50:17.617 are listening really closely, 2017-03-10 16:50:20.617 it's not a door closing. 2017-03-10 16:50:21.616 It's actually one of the most 2017-03-10 16:50:25.614 fervent ways of saying what's 2017-03-10 16:50:27.616 going on. 2017-03-10 16:50:27.617 An, another huge learning moment 2017-03-10 16:50:31.625 for me is that -- always after 2017-03-10 16:50:35.622 food, that says -- he starts 2017-03-10 16:50:40.617 reminiscing or remembering the 2017-03-10 16:50:43.617 smell of flesh burning and the 2017-03-10 16:50:46.662 oil fires in Kuwait. 2017-03-10 16:50:47.661 His friend says, stop it. 2017-03-10 16:50:49.66 We do that in therapy. 2017-03-10 16:50:52.712 We don't do this here. 2017-03-10 16:50:53.711 I'm only listening, and I'm 2017-03-10 16:50:55.712 quiet. 2017-03-10 16:50:56.712 And then I say, is it that 2017-03-10 16:50:59.712 Manuel can't tell the story, or 2017-03-10 16:51:02.715 is it that the story can't be 2017-03-10 16:51:02.715 told? 2017-03-10 16:51:03.722 The guy said, I don't know. 2017-03-10 16:51:05.721 I think that always being a good 2017-03-10 16:51:09.714 and respectful listener but also 2017-03-10 16:51:15.711 not letting a moment that seems 2017-03-10 16:51:15.712 to be emphatic or door shutting 2017-03-10 16:51:18.713 BA door shut. 2017-03-10 16:51:19.712 It's a door opening to a hole 2017-03-10 16:51:24.715 deeper understanding about 2017-03-10 16:51:24.716 what's really going on. 2017-03-10 16:51:25.713 >> That's great. 2017-03-10 16:51:28.786 Anybody else want to add to 2017-03-10 16:51:31.786 that? 2017-03-10 16:51:31.786 >> A couple of things that I 2017-03-10 16:51:35.827 think are coming up around the 2017-03-10 16:51:35.827 table, one is a question of, I 2017-03-10 16:51:38.834 wonder if in terms of building 2017-03-10 16:51:41.941 trust, how -- is it different? 2017-03-10 16:51:44.83 As artists, we know trust is a 2017-03-10 16:51:48.834 key part of the creative 2017-03-10 16:51:51.823 process. 2017-03-10 16:51:51.823 But trust inside of -- you are 2017-03-10 16:51:55.825 talking about doing oral history 2017-03-10 16:52:00.905 projects. 2017-03-10 16:52:00.906 We have all probably done some 2017-03-10 16:52:00.906 version of that. 2017-03-10 16:52:00.907 How does this differentiate, and 2017-03-10 16:52:04.868 is that related to trauma, is it 2017-03-10 16:52:08.873 related to the military being so 2017-03-10 16:52:08.873 far away from artistic practice 2017-03-10 16:52:11.867 more generally? 2017-03-10 16:52:11.868 How do you identify the 2017-03-10 16:52:13.87 challenges of building trust in 2017-03-10 16:52:18.871 military and veteran 2017-03-10 16:52:18.871 communities? 2017-03-10 16:52:19.88 >> If you talk about motives, 2017-03-10 16:52:28.868 both your own, for wanting to be 2017-03-10 16:52:32.871 involved with these stories, and 2017-03-10 16:52:35.87 somehow reveal your own 2017-03-10 16:52:38.872 vulnerability in that, and then 2017-03-10 16:52:43.947 ask the person you are doing the 2017-03-10 16:52:43.948 oral history with, what was 2017-03-10 16:52:48.916 their motive for wanting to tell 2017-03-10 16:52:48.916 this story? 2017-03-10 16:52:48.917 It really gives them agency, it 2017-03-10 16:52:52.913 gives them a sense of purpose, 2017-03-10 16:52:56.997 and they can address what they 2017-03-10 16:52:58.038 want to address and come at it 2017-03-10 16:52:59.044 from the angle they want to come 2017-03-10 16:52:59.044 at it from. 2017-03-10 16:53:00.036 I think of the larger project 2017-03-10 16:53:04.036 for me, beyond understanding 2017-03-10 16:53:08.079 veterans and their experience, 2017-03-10 16:53:08.079 is how can we be compassionate 2017-03-10 16:53:11.121 with each other as human beings. 2017-03-10 16:53:15.121 When I express that motive and 2017-03-10 16:53:17.119 say, I think you have something 2017-03-10 16:53:20.121 to teach me and others, because 2017-03-10 16:53:22.119 of your experience, it gives 2017-03-10 16:53:24.121 them a lot of power and allows 2017-03-10 16:53:28.142 them to shape how they want to 2017-03-10 16:53:28.142 deliver that message. 2017-03-10 16:53:30.173 >> I think building on that 2017-03-10 16:53:36.213 idea, it's like that question. 2017-03-10 16:53:39.222 What do you want people to know 2017-03-10 16:53:42.212 that they don't know? 2017-03-10 16:53:42.213 What's not out there? 2017-03-10 16:53:44.214 We encountered multiple times in 2017-03-10 16:53:48.248 workshops or talking to people, 2017-03-10 16:53:51.246 if you would say what are the 2017-03-10 16:53:52.252 stereotypes people have about 2017-03-10 16:53:52.252 women veterans? 2017-03-10 16:53:53.293 You open up the door to these 2017-03-10 16:53:56.414 brainstorms and all these ideas 2017-03-10 16:54:02.414 that circulate in our culture 2017-03-10 16:54:02.415 about who veterans are and who 2017-03-10 16:54:04.462 women veterans are. 2017-03-10 16:54:05.462 The women we were working with 2017-03-10 16:54:08.466 were very aware of that. 2017-03-10 16:54:10.461 I often felt like acknowledging 2017-03-10 16:54:13.464 that was out there, and there 2017-03-10 16:54:17.463 were some things that showed up 2017-03-10 16:54:17.464 in every one of those 2017-03-10 16:54:17.464 conversations, but acknowledging 2017-03-10 16:54:20.493 those misperceptions are there 2017-03-10 16:54:23.495 freed up the room and allowed us 2017-03-10 16:54:23.495 to be in on it. 2017-03-10 16:54:25.494 Let's even get beyond the 2017-03-10 16:54:28.499 statistics. 2017-03-10 16:54:28.5 Let's get to a deeper kind of 2017-03-10 16:54:31.498 truth. 2017-03-10 16:54:31.499 That was a way in for us that 2017-03-10 16:54:37.501 helped kind of build that sense, 2017-03-10 16:54:40.584 and maybe because some of those 2017-03-10 16:54:41.58 narratives are so pervasive, and 2017-03-10 16:54:45.583 there is a code of silence 2017-03-10 16:54:45.584 around certain things, that we 2017-03-10 16:54:47.581 have had to break through that. 2017-03-10 16:54:50.581 I did feel that that was 2017-03-10 16:54:51.582 different. 2017-03-10 16:54:51.582 That did feel unique to this 2017-03-10 16:54:53.58 project. 2017-03-10 16:54:54.58 >> Have a couple other questions 2017-03-10 16:55:00.581 about this question of -- as I'm 2017-03-10 16:55:06.665 listening -- often artists think 2017-03-10 16:55:12.665 they understand the full range 2017-03-10 16:55:12.666 of human emotion. 2017-03-10 16:55:14.664 We have great confidence in our 2017-03-10 16:55:17.667 ability to tell stories that are 2017-03-10 16:55:22.665 emotional and intense. 2017-03-10 16:55:22.666 I was just reading about -- 2017-03-10 16:55:26.671 thinking about watching live -- 2017-03-10 16:55:28.665 Liz and her project and how 2017-03-10 16:55:31.771 emotional that was on a -- was, 2017-03-10 16:55:36.766 and how these stories are not as 2017-03-10 16:55:36.767 familiar as other kinds of 2017-03-10 16:55:40.764 stories straight you don't have 2017-03-10 16:55:41.766 somebody who is a trauma person 2017-03-10 16:55:41.766 in the room. 2017-03-10 16:55:42.764 I wonder about that relationship 2017-03-10 16:55:49.803 between how do you manage this 2017-03-10 16:55:49.804 experience of trauma in your 2017-03-10 16:55:51.836 various artistic process -- 2017-03-10 16:55:54.832 practice. 2017-03-10 16:55:54.833 Are there moments where you have 2017-03-10 16:55:54.833 felt in over your head with the 2017-03-10 16:55:56.829 work in any way. 2017-03-10 16:56:00.833 I'm curious about that. 2017-03-10 16:56:00.833 >> When we started getting ready 2017-03-10 16:56:21.964 to do the initial interviews, it 2017-03-10 16:56:25.013 was with a therapist in the room 2017-03-10 16:56:30.012 who really didn't allow the vets 2017-03-10 16:56:31.013 to talk to us directly. 2017-03-10 16:56:35.014 She was sort of the conduit and 2017-03-10 16:56:40.012 it felt like we were being 2017-03-10 16:56:40.013 pitted against the vets in a 2017-03-10 16:56:44.04 very strange, subtle, and 2017-03-10 16:56:46.04 sinuous way. 2017-03-10 16:56:48.04 Like she was protecting the vets 2017-03-10 16:56:50.04 from us, which I think didn't 2017-03-10 16:56:55.042 help them trust the we were in 2017-03-10 16:56:55.043 it for the long haul or about 2017-03-10 16:56:57.043 motivation, why we were doing 2017-03-10 16:56:58.045 this. 2017-03-10 16:57:00.042 It wasn't helping. 2017-03-10 16:57:04.125 Once we kind of moved away from 2017-03-10 16:57:04.125 that, and Megan led this amazing 2017-03-10 16:57:07.125 story circle -- Tunisia is also 2017-03-10 16:57:12.201 a counselor. 2017-03-10 16:57:12.201 It was with 15 of us. 2017-03-10 16:57:17.125 Megan had us tell our stories 2017-03-10 16:57:17.126 too. 2017-03-10 16:57:20.172 We began by telling a story as 2017-03-10 16:57:21.17 well. 2017-03-10 16:57:21.171 All of a sudden it was like the 2017-03-10 16:57:24.167 dam opened. 2017-03-10 16:57:26.172 We had been kicking around with 2017-03-10 16:57:28.175 it for two years at that point. 2017-03-10 16:57:31.181 I think they just needed to 2017-03-10 16:57:35.168 trust that we were not going to 2017-03-10 16:57:38.169 be going away. 2017-03-10 16:57:38.17 It was interesting to me. 2017-03-10 16:57:42.167 It was interesting to me how 2017-03-10 16:57:46.216 once that one person was removed 2017-03-10 16:57:48.266 from the room and we were able 2017-03-10 16:57:51.297 to deal with each other 2017-03-10 16:57:52.293 one-on-one and build these 2017-03-10 16:57:53.293 individual relationships, then 2017-03-10 16:57:58.295 they wanted to trust us with 2017-03-10 16:58:00.296 their stories in an interesting 2017-03-10 16:58:03.299 way. 2017-03-10 16:58:03.3 I never quite unpacked this. 2017-03-10 16:58:08.298 >> The people charged working in 2017-03-10 16:58:12.381 the mental health system, but 2017-03-10 16:58:12.382 that's a lot of us. 2017-03-10 16:58:12.383 They are on the front line in a 2017-03-10 16:58:19.417 very real way. 2017-03-10 16:58:20.427 It makes sense they will throw 2017-03-10 16:58:20.428 themselves on some metaphorical 2017-03-10 16:58:22.432 version in order to keep the 2017-03-10 16:58:27.425 vets from being heard or 2017-03-10 16:58:27.426 traumatized. 2017-03-10 16:58:34.419 This is a good topic to tap on. 2017-03-10 16:58:38.469 >> A lot of people want to -- 2017-03-10 16:58:42.466 there's a lot of funding and 2017-03-10 16:58:46.528 around working in the veterans 2017-03-10 16:58:46.529 communities. 2017-03-10 16:58:46.529 A lot of folks are trying to 2017-03-10 16:58:51.519 maybe in some situations -- in 2017-03-10 16:58:53.515 Chicago I've heard there have 2017-03-10 16:58:54.516 been people abusing that 2017-03-10 16:58:57.525 opportunity and maybe not in it 2017-03-10 16:58:58.515 for the long haul or have 2017-03-10 16:59:00.546 questionable motivations. 2017-03-10 16:59:00.547 I think it makes the veterans 2017-03-10 16:59:03.628 community very much keeping 2017-03-10 16:59:05.624 folks at arms length. 2017-03-10 16:59:07.646 Chicago, oh my god. 2017-03-10 16:59:12.628 >> There's a real difference 2017-03-10 16:59:16.626 between being trusted with the 2017-03-10 16:59:19.627 story you are given, but it has 2017-03-10 16:59:23.681 another element of trust, which 2017-03-10 16:59:24.719 is how it is presented on stage. 2017-03-10 16:59:25.717 I made a really bad blunder. 2017-03-10 16:59:29.714 It wasn't all me. 2017-03-10 16:59:30.72 We have one vet who was in and 2017-03-10 16:59:35.715 out of the project, wasn't sure 2017-03-10 16:59:38.766 he wanted to have a story in the 2017-03-10 16:59:38.767 play. 2017-03-10 16:59:39.772 And, eventually said he would. 2017-03-10 16:59:42.766 Then there was a scene in which 2017-03-10 16:59:47.842 she has kind of a flashback. 2017-03-10 16:59:49.771 -- to his combat experience. 2017-03-10 16:59:55.798 How that represented physically 2017-03-10 16:59:55.798 on the stage was the question. 2017-03-10 16:59:59.796 The director I was working with 2017-03-10 17:00:01.799 wanted him to get on his knees 2017-03-10 17:00:05.796 and scuttle to one side of the 2017-03-10 17:00:05.797 stage. 2017-03-10 17:00:07.796 I wasn't sure about it and we 2017-03-10 17:00:09.838 went with it. 2017-03-10 17:00:10.878 On fact, -- in fact, our vet 2017-03-10 17:00:16.878 decided he didn't want to come 2017-03-10 17:00:17.896 see the play. 2017-03-10 17:00:19.884 But I got feedback that 2017-03-10 17:00:24.884 somebody was pretty upset that 2017-03-10 17:00:27.881 we have represented that, 2017-03-10 17:00:27.882 knowing Al is a resilient 2017-03-10 17:00:32.879 person, who goes into schools 2017-03-10 17:00:32.88 and talks about his vet 2017-03-10 17:00:35.967 experience even though it 2017-03-10 17:00:35.967 traumatizes them, and this was 2017-03-10 17:00:37.966 not a good representation of 2017-03-10 17:00:39.966 him. 2017-03-10 17:00:39.966 When we filmed the play, we took 2017-03-10 17:00:42.967 that scene out of the film. 2017-03-10 17:00:44.967 It was a big lesson for me, not 2017-03-10 17:00:50.042 only about having somebody trust 2017-03-10 17:00:50.043 you with her story, but trust 2017-03-10 17:00:52.016 you to represent it in a way 2017-03-10 17:00:55.02 that feels right and authentic 2017-03-10 17:00:56.024 to them. 2017-03-10 17:00:56.025 >> I want to speak to what you 2017-03-10 17:01:01.1 said earlier, Tara, in reference 2017-03-10 17:01:04.047 to telling your story. 2017-03-10 17:01:05.049 That's one of the things that I 2017-03-10 17:01:10.047 did. 2017-03-10 17:01:10.048 And looking for ways how I can 2017-03-10 17:01:13.047 relate to these veterans on a 2017-03-10 17:01:16.086 different level, right? 2017-03-10 17:01:18.087 And because -- the vi ebe doesn't 2017-03-10 17:01:26.172 exist, right? 2017-03-10 17:01:27.181 We know it exists. 2017-03-10 17:01:30.202 There are other commonalities. 2017-03-10 17:01:31.17 We would talk about things. 2017-03-10 17:01:34.173 Most of us were Puerto Rican, 2017-03-10 17:01:38.171 who grew up in the states. 2017-03-10 17:01:41.175 That was part of our 2017-03-10 17:01:41.176 commonality. 2017-03-10 17:01:41.176 We talked about our fathers and 2017-03-10 17:01:46.251 relationships with our fathers. 2017-03-10 17:01:48.215 Through these conversations, the 2017-03-10 17:01:50.216 structure of the piece came 2017-03-10 17:01:51.217 about, which was -- I said, 2017-03-10 17:01:56.291 let's do childhood military 2017-03-10 17:02:00.267 service and post military 2017-03-10 17:02:00.267 service. 2017-03-10 17:02:02.266 It was these childhood 2017-03-10 17:02:04.267 experiences there really 2017-03-10 17:02:07.266 connected us and made us relate 2017-03-10 17:02:10.266 to each other. 2017-03-10 17:02:11.267 In my story is not the story of 2017-03-10 17:02:14.302 a veteran, but it has its own 2017-03-10 17:02:19.378 struggles and trauma. 2017-03-10 17:02:20.298 Drama and trauma, yes. 2017-03-10 17:02:23.299 >> Part two. 2017-03-10 17:02:26.298 I met with Teo. 2017-03-10 17:02:30.347 We did a writing workshop 2017-03-10 17:02:34.424 through Miami-Dade College. 2017-03-10 17:02:35.477 We met before the workshop, 2017-03-10 17:02:38.467 which would be a weekly workshop 2017-03-10 17:02:38.468 for 4 months. 2017-03-10 17:02:39.474 Four veterans showed up, putting 2017-03-10 17:02:45.47 myself, which ended up informing 2017-03-10 17:02:45.47 the hippies. 2017-03-10 17:02:48.516 I'm not familiar with this at 2017-03-10 17:02:49.518 all, how do I approach this. 2017-03-10 17:02:53.517 When they mention his name for 2017-03-10 17:02:53.517 the workshop I said, Teo who? 2017-03-10 17:02:54.515 I did my research, and when we 2017-03-10 17:02:58.517 met I was like, your reputation 2017-03-10 17:02:59.517 precedes itself. 2017-03-10 17:03:02.516 I know who you are and the work 2017-03-10 17:03:04.517 you do. 2017-03-10 17:03:04.517 I feel you really gell well with 2017-03-10 17:03:10.55 the group. 2017-03-10 17:03:10.551 One of the hippies is a relative 2017-03-10 17:03:11.559 of mine and the other two were 2017-03-10 17:03:12.55 friends. 2017-03-10 17:03:13.597 As we started aligning 2017-03-10 17:03:16.59 commonalities versus 2017-03-10 17:03:17.591 differences, I really started 2017-03-10 17:03:22.668 coming together. 2017-03-10 17:03:22.668 One thing I loved about Teo's 2017-03-10 17:03:26.631 approach was that it was like 2017-03-10 17:03:27.633 hands-on but hands-off at the 2017-03-10 17:03:27.634 same time. 2017-03-10 17:03:28.637 He was molding us and crafting, 2017-03-10 17:03:33.635 and when a story came up he 2017-03-10 17:03:34.635 would find a commonality and 2017-03-10 17:03:35.633 say, let's explore that more. 2017-03-10 17:03:36.638 He would kind of guide us. 2017-03-10 17:03:38.635 That gave us a sense of freedom 2017-03-10 17:03:41.637 and autonomy, but also with his 2017-03-10 17:03:44.768 experience and direction. 2017-03-10 17:03:47.772 What I really grasped the most 2017-03-10 17:03:52.766 was, the universality of the 2017-03-10 17:03:57.766 emotions and feelings of the 2017-03-10 17:04:00.816 experiences, that is what 2017-03-10 17:04:00.817 everyone can relate to. 2017-03-10 17:04:01.814 Pain and loss and hurt and 2017-03-10 17:04:06.902 suffering, and also growth and 2017-03-10 17:04:09.883 resiliency, and this idea that 2017-03-10 17:04:10.884 sharing stories brings us closer 2017-03-10 17:04:12.884 together. 2017-03-10 17:04:13.885 >> They call me Papa Hippie now. 2017-03-10 17:04:17.897 >> You asked about failures or 2017-03-10 17:04:24.89 mistakes. 2017-03-10 17:04:24.891 I think I've so far completely 2017-03-10 17:04:27.892 failed in actually moving things 2017-03-10 17:04:32.967 forward on military sexual 2017-03-10 17:04:36.924 trauma, and so that's -- 2017-03-10 17:04:42.001 primarily with women. 2017-03-10 17:04:42.002 They will try a story and then I 2017-03-10 17:04:45.928 will never see them again. 2017-03-10 17:04:46.927 That was my story, thank you so 2017-03-10 17:04:50.928 much, please don't use my name. 2017-03-10 17:04:51.934 It's such a key issue, and I 2017-03-10 17:04:58.021 think I have a picture of why 2017-03-10 17:04:58.022 that doesn't get to the page or 2017-03-10 17:05:02.019 the stage at this point. 2017-03-10 17:05:03.018 I'm wondering if anybody here 2017-03-10 17:05:05.016 has thoughts about this here. 2017-03-10 17:05:08.022 >> I was sitting here thinking 2017-03-10 17:05:11.068 about that. 2017-03-10 17:05:12.071 Part of that -- that grant 2017-03-10 17:05:17.067 timeline earlier, we did a 2017-03-10 17:05:19.071 workshop, public performance. 2017-03-10 17:05:24.073 We had a university collaborator 2017-03-10 17:05:24.073 in Chicago at USC. 2017-03-10 17:05:28.095 We did a public workshop of what 2017-03-10 17:05:30.104 we had so far. 2017-03-10 17:05:31.097 They were scratching the surface 2017-03-10 17:05:35.1 story straight we had standing 2017-03-10 17:05:35.101 room only crowd. 2017-03-10 17:05:39.134 160 people showed up. 2017-03-10 17:05:40.135 It was fabulous and horrifying. 2017-03-10 17:05:45.216 Veteran civilians, and just -- 2017-03-10 17:05:51.22 really fantastic. 2017-03-10 17:05:52.22 It was a huge artistic risk 2017-03-10 17:05:54.226 because we were so aware of what 2017-03-10 17:05:56.235 it wasn't. 2017-03-10 17:05:59.27 But what was great about taking 2017-03-10 17:06:04.345 that risk is there were a lot of 2017-03-10 17:06:04.346 veterans there who watched it 2017-03-10 17:06:09.317 and saw with us what wasn't 2017-03-10 17:06:10.319 there. 2017-03-10 17:06:10.319 And then because we did the town 2017-03-10 17:06:12.321 hall, a lot of women came to us 2017-03-10 17:06:16.325 after that and said, dismissing. 2017-03-10 17:06:18.348 And that was like the greatest 2017-03-10 17:06:22.346 failure that turned into like 2017-03-10 17:06:22.347 the greatest gift. 2017-03-10 17:06:25.342 Because we took the risk to put 2017-03-10 17:06:26.341 it out of there before it was 2017-03-10 17:06:27.343 done, we invited that community 2017-03-10 17:06:30.343 and like all good audiences, to 2017-03-10 17:06:33.342 come into it and say, here's 2017-03-10 17:06:35.342 what I see, here's what I want 2017-03-10 17:06:35.343 to see. 2017-03-10 17:06:36.344 And after that, stories about 2017-03-10 17:06:40.347 military sexual assault and 2017-03-10 17:06:43.404 sexual trauma started coming to 2017-03-10 17:06:43.404 us with permission to use it, 2017-03-10 17:06:47.343 and nuanced stories. 2017-03-10 17:06:50.388 Not just like this happened, but 2017-03-10 17:06:51.388 also women spoke to us about how 2017-03-10 17:06:54.473 they handled it, how they looked 2017-03-10 17:06:56.467 out for each other. 2017-03-10 17:06:57.467 Accommodations that were made or 2017-03-10 17:07:01.474 decisions that got made or 2017-03-10 17:07:01.475 things that got moved forward or 2017-03-10 17:07:04.467 of the ranks or didn't, and why. 2017-03-10 17:07:05.468 And we were able to represent 2017-03-10 17:07:05.469 that. 2017-03-10 17:07:08.467 It became a significant part of 2017-03-10 17:07:09.469 the show, and something that 2017-03-10 17:07:14.546 always -- that we would be 2017-03-10 17:07:14.546 unpacking and those town halls. 2017-03-10 17:07:17.555 It is still in the news, but you 2017-03-10 17:07:18.521 remember a few years back -- 2017-03-10 17:07:22.518 there was a lot of legal 2017-03-10 17:07:23.53 policies going on, and that is 2017-03-10 17:07:24.521 when our show hit. 2017-03-10 17:07:25.528 It felt like a really 2017-03-10 17:07:30.604 interesting confluence of the 2017-03-10 17:07:30.605 times, and then that workshop 2017-03-10 17:07:34.572 moments. 2017-03-10 17:07:35.569 >> To hearken back to what are 2017-03-10 17:07:42.575 some of the strategies, when we 2017-03-10 17:07:42.576 began it, particularly -- I'm a 2017-03-10 17:07:46.597 civilian, right, and I don't 2017-03-10 17:07:48.597 have many close relatives or 2017-03-10 17:07:48.597 friends who have served. 2017-03-10 17:07:52.597 I was really on the outside of 2017-03-10 17:07:52.598 the military culture in a huge 2017-03-10 17:07:54.596 way and about as clueless. 2017-03-10 17:07:58.597 My understanding of the military 2017-03-10 17:08:01.64 and military culture is that you 2017-03-10 17:08:01.641 are all the same. 2017-03-10 17:08:04.722 Probably you all joined for the 2017-03-10 17:08:08.721 same reasons. 2017-03-10 17:08:08.722 Megan spent a lot of time and 2017-03-10 17:08:08.723 energy talking about where 2017-03-10 17:08:11.727 motivation lies, like lighted 2017-03-10 17:08:11.728 you join. 2017-03-10 17:08:15.722 But understanding the subtleties 2017-03-10 17:08:16.727 and differences and the unique 2017-03-10 17:08:17.721 experiences of every single 2017-03-10 17:08:20.727 person we talked to, and so 2017-03-10 17:08:23.781 every time the show would begin 2017-03-10 17:08:24.77 or the stories would begin to 2017-03-10 17:08:24.771 tilt one way, making sure we had 2017-03-10 17:08:28.779 the counterpoint story. 2017-03-10 17:08:28.78 For someone who would tell us 2017-03-10 17:08:34.771 about their experience that was 2017-03-10 17:08:36.771 really challenging and hard and 2017-03-10 17:08:36.771 they hated what the military did 2017-03-10 17:08:36.772 to them, the next day I 2017-03-10 17:08:39.827 interviewed a major who talked 2017-03-10 17:08:39.828 about how -- what a good thing 2017-03-10 17:08:46.821 her service was and how she 2017-03-10 17:08:46.822 would go back in a heartbeat 2017-03-10 17:08:48.819 trade one minute they would be 2017-03-10 17:08:48.819 saying how it was amazing and 2017-03-10 17:08:51.828 phenomenal and the next minute 2017-03-10 17:08:51.828 there would be trade -- tears 2017-03-10 17:08:55.849 going down their faces, they 2017-03-10 17:08:57.846 would talk about coming home and 2017-03-10 17:08:57.847 looking for the commonality and 2017-03-10 17:08:59.853 people's experiences, good, bad 2017-03-10 17:09:05.942 grades there are moments they 2017-03-10 17:09:06.865 all started to kind of land on 2017-03-10 17:09:06.865 the same point as we were 2017-03-10 17:09:08.853 listening. 2017-03-10 17:09:08.854 I don't know if that's helpful. 2017-03-10 17:09:12.893 That just popped up for me. 2017-03-10 17:09:17.969 I keep saying to Megan, we have 2017-03-10 17:09:23.932 to figure out a way to get that. 2017-03-10 17:09:25.933 Luckily the production is pretty 2017-03-10 17:09:25.933 fluid. 2017-03-10 17:09:26.932 I'm constantly asking to 2017-03-10 17:09:29.932 rewrite. 2017-03-10 17:09:29.933 The difference between the 2017-03-10 17:09:32.974 branches and how somebody from 2017-03-10 17:09:32.975 the air oars -- force and speaks 2017-03-10 17:09:39.02 about how somebody is a Marine. 2017-03-10 17:09:39.021 To the civilian world, that is 2017-03-10 17:09:42.04 just -- 2017-03-10 17:09:42.041 >> Hierarchy. 2017-03-10 17:09:44.018 >> Yeah. 2017-03-10 17:09:46.018 >> I've heard this thing about 2017-03-10 17:09:49.069 commonality coming up and 2017-03-10 17:09:52.07 commonality in our trauma. 2017-03-10 17:09:52.07 I think that it's really key and 2017-03-10 17:10:00.068 what to me is the largest 2017-03-10 17:10:00.069 question, how do we deal with 2017-03-10 17:10:02.07 these wars that have happened. 2017-03-10 17:10:05.069 A great wound has opened up our 2017-03-10 17:10:08.097 nation, and I think it's our job 2017-03-10 17:10:13.101 as artists, storytellers to try 2017-03-10 17:10:13.102 to heal it or at least shed 2017-03-10 17:10:17.102 light on it, ancient shamans 2017-03-10 17:10:20.102 took on the trauma, the pain in 2017-03-10 17:10:22.099 order that the community could 2017-03-10 17:10:22.1 transcend it. 2017-03-10 17:10:23.102 I'm saying how important I think 2017-03-10 17:10:27.143 this work we are all doing is, 2017-03-10 17:10:32.142 and the trauma is the thing that 2017-03-10 17:10:33.143 unites us. 2017-03-10 17:10:33.144 The three communities I was 2017-03-10 17:10:33.144 interviewing who, none of them 2017-03-10 17:10:36.159 would talk to each other, of 2017-03-10 17:10:37.141 course, and all wondered why we 2017-03-10 17:10:41.143 were interviewing the other 2017-03-10 17:10:41.143 communities. 2017-03-10 17:10:42.143 The young American soldier who 2017-03-10 17:10:48.187 suffers moral injury from 2017-03-10 17:10:52.231 pointing his gun over and over 2017-03-10 17:10:52.232 again at an Iraqi family, the 2017-03-10 17:10:56.227 Iraqi mother who tries to find a 2017-03-10 17:11:01.225 doctor to give her a C-section 2017-03-10 17:11:05.226 at the moment that Baghdad is in 2017-03-10 17:11:07.226 flames and bombs are going and 2017-03-10 17:11:07.227 she can't find a doctor. 2017-03-10 17:11:10.226 The American who sees his 2017-03-10 17:11:16.318 friend, or she sees her friend 2017-03-10 17:11:17.316 blown up by an IED that is 2017-03-10 17:11:19.319 planted in wounded dogs by 2017-03-10 17:11:21.401 insurgents. 2017-03-10 17:11:23.324 All of those stories, very 2017-03-10 17:11:27.317 specifically -- they are all 2017-03-10 17:11:27.317 suffering trauma. 2017-03-10 17:11:29.316 I just feel really strongly that 2017-03-10 17:11:32.353 if we don't look at the larger 2017-03-10 17:11:35.393 picture of trauma in these wars, 2017-03-10 17:11:40.394 we will never come to terms with 2017-03-10 17:11:40.394 them. 2017-03-10 17:11:40.395 World War II, we are still 2017-03-10 17:11:45.394 trying to figure that out. 2017-03-10 17:11:45.394 We can't only talk to vets about 2017-03-10 17:11:49.394 it. 2017-03-10 17:11:49.394 We haven't even begun to deal 2017-03-10 17:11:49.395 with Vietnam. 2017-03-10 17:11:50.393 These wars demand that we expand 2017-03-10 17:12:01.479 our context. 2017-03-10 17:12:01.479 >> Thank you for that prompt. 2017-03-10 17:12:04.482 Something has been on my mind 2017-03-10 17:12:08.477 since I got invited to this 2017-03-10 17:12:08.478 gathering. 2017-03-10 17:12:08.478 Some of these logic questions, 2017-03-10 17:12:12.479 going beyond your larger 2017-03-10 17:12:16.478 question, which have to do with 2017-03-10 17:12:16.478 our society in general. 2017-03-10 17:12:16.479 I think we have a culture of 2017-03-10 17:12:20.477 violence in this country, which 2017-03-10 17:12:22.569 is profound, and not adequately 2017-03-10 17:12:25.602 discussed. 2017-03-10 17:12:26.601 I just noted down some questions 2017-03-10 17:12:33.61 that I personally have been 2017-03-10 17:12:33.611 thinking about and maybe others 2017-03-10 17:12:34.601 here will think about too. 2017-03-10 17:12:36.603 Discussions about artistic 2017-03-10 17:12:41.678 representation. 2017-03-10 17:12:42.601 I wrote them down here. 2017-03-10 17:12:44.645 Why does our country spend more 2017-03-10 17:12:47.728 on its military in the next 7 2017-03-10 17:12:50.727 countries combined? 2017-03-10 17:12:51.728 Why are we permanently at war? 2017-03-10 17:12:53.728 Why are our police departments 2017-03-10 17:12:59.728 as we saw at Ferguson and 2017-03-10 17:12:59.729 standing rock increasingly 2017-03-10 17:13:00.727 militarized? 2017-03-10 17:13:01.728 Why are nearly 230,000 veterans 2017-03-10 17:13:10.773 transitioning out of military 2017-03-10 17:13:10.774 service every month? 2017-03-10 17:13:10.774 Why does President Trump propose 2017-03-10 17:13:14.78 to boost the military budget by 2017-03-10 17:13:18.82 54 billion dollars and cut 2017-03-10 17:13:18.82 domestic programs by the same 2017-03-10 17:13:18.821 amount, including the endowment 2017-03-10 17:13:21.82 for the arts? 2017-03-10 17:13:21.821 Why do I great many Americans 2017-03-10 17:13:24.822 feel comfortable with all of 2017-03-10 17:13:24.822 this? 2017-03-10 17:13:25.82 I don't think these are just 2017-03-10 17:13:28.816 political questions. 2017-03-10 17:13:30.825 Why do a great many Americans 2017-03-10 17:13:36.854 feel comfortable with all of 2017-03-10 17:13:36.855 this? 2017-03-10 17:13:37.854 These are not just political and 2017-03-10 17:13:41.913 social questions. 2017-03-10 17:13:42.85 They are moral questions. 2017-03-10 17:13:44.85 As artists, we went to 2017-03-10 17:13:50.851 investigate and interrogate 2017-03-10 17:13:50.851 moral questions. 2017-03-10 17:13:50.852 I don't know what to do with it, 2017-03-10 17:13:54.868 but I needed to say it. 2017-03-10 17:13:55.892 >> Final word. 2017-03-10 17:13:58.895 There are two final words, then 2017-03-10 17:14:01.896 we will break out. 2017-03-10 17:14:02.898 >> A couple of things I've been 2017-03-10 17:14:06.899 thinking about, bouncing off 2017-03-10 17:14:06.9 both of you. 2017-03-10 17:14:08.895 When I started this work, I was 2017-03-10 17:14:12.896 looking at an impact on the 2017-03-10 17:14:14.94 audience from a couple of 2017-03-10 17:14:15.958 perspectives. 2017-03-10 17:14:15.972 I wanted to go into theater and 2017-03-10 17:14:18.064 I wanted to show the audience 2017-03-10 17:14:20.938 award they were -- a war they 2017-03-10 17:14:20.938 were not seeing on the 2017-03-10 17:14:20.939 televisions. 2017-03-10 17:14:22.937 I created all this work about 2017-03-10 17:14:38.938 trying to harness that emotion, 2017-03-10 17:14:42.979 and use that emotion for good. 2017-03-10 17:14:43.98 Question mark. 2017-03-10 17:14:45.983 And then, I experienced two 2017-03-10 17:14:50.98 things which made me transition 2017-03-10 17:14:52.983 a little bit. 2017-03-10 17:14:52.983 One of them was, the feeling of 2017-03-10 17:14:56.98 the audience after the show was 2017-03-10 17:15:00.053 just so heavy. 2017-03-10 17:15:01.995 So many people were asking, so 2017-03-10 17:15:06.026 what's next? 2017-03-10 17:15:08.031 And, it forced me to look at 2017-03-10 17:15:13.025 what's next and create what's 2017-03-10 17:15:16.025 next and start looking at that 2017-03-10 17:15:18.024 vision of hope for the future. 2017-03-10 17:15:20.024 One of the words we now perform 2017-03-10 17:15:23.023 is a work created with Iraqi 2017-03-10 17:15:24.027 youth the talk about hope in 2017-03-10 17:15:27.025 past combat. 2017-03-10 17:15:30.074 Going further, where does that 2017-03-10 17:15:32.207 conversation go now, bouncing 2017-03-10 17:15:35.072 off your question? 2017-03-10 17:15:36.13 We have encompassed this feeling 2017-03-10 17:15:39.12 of showing this war and showing 2017-03-10 17:15:41.12 this combat, and then coming out 2017-03-10 17:15:43.121 of this, let's all grow flowers 2017-03-10 17:15:46.121 and look at the sun all day and 2017-03-10 17:15:49.123 feel it on our skin. 2017-03-10 17:15:53.123 And then the reality of life, 2017-03-10 17:15:53.124 how do we connect the two of 2017-03-10 17:15:53.124 those. 2017-03-10 17:15:54.149 This is more of a question, 2017-03-10 17:15:57.153 something I'm investigating, how 2017-03-10 17:16:01.153 do we find -- I will still lives 2017-03-10 17:16:01.154 for a second. 2017-03-10 17:16:02.152 -- steal Liz for a second. 2017-03-10 17:16:08.16 How do we take those things and 2017-03-10 17:16:08.16 turn them sideways? 2017-03-10 17:16:09.146 >> I think the questions that 2017-03-10 17:16:14.222 have recently been asked, and 2017-03-10 17:16:16.146 issues are mine and all of ours 2017-03-10 17:16:19.188 as humans. 2017-03-10 17:16:20.19 I don't bring them into my work 2017-03-10 17:16:23.193 vets at all. 2017-03-10 17:16:23.193 It's like, what is the objective 2017-03-10 17:16:32.196 I have? 2017-03-10 17:16:32.197 Why am I doing this work? 2017-03-10 17:16:35.19 Are these questions I'm asking 2017-03-10 17:16:37.191 myself? 2017-03-10 17:16:38.192 Those are questions -- you said 2017-03-10 17:16:42.236 a good point. 2017-03-10 17:16:43.233 So, I don't. 2017-03-10 17:16:45.242 What I do is work really hard to 2017-03-10 17:16:50.238 try to get vets there who are 2017-03-10 17:16:56.235 asking themselves different 2017-03-10 17:16:58.236 questions. 2017-03-10 17:16:58.237 Whether that is somebody from 2017-03-10 17:17:03.236 veterans who decided to be a 2017-03-10 17:17:03.237 part of veterans for peace, 2017-03-10 17:17:07.274 whether that's -- every vet is 2017-03-10 17:17:12.275 different. 2017-03-10 17:17:12.276 And so, as in any piece to try 2017-03-10 17:17:18.275 to get as diverse a particular 2017-03-10 17:17:18.276 group together, and then how can 2017-03-10 17:17:21.281 I get out of the way and make 2017-03-10 17:17:24.278 way at the same time. 2017-03-10 17:17:27.32 >> Great. 2017-03-10 17:17:28.322 Thank you all. 2017-03-10 17:17:30.321 Great conversation. 2017-03-10 17:17:32.321 I really appreciate the honesty 2017-03-10 17:17:37.322 and integrity in the 2017-03-10 17:17:37.323 conversation. 2017-03-10 17:17:38.324 You'll go back to the outer 2017-03-10 17:17:41.371 circle and seats, and we will 2017-03-10 17:17:44.377 have an open conversation. 2017-03-10 17:17:45.37 Thank you. 2017-03-10 17:17:46.372 [APPLAUSE] 2017-03-10 17:17:46.372 Great. 2017-03-10 17:18:08.402 So, we've got some microphones. 2017-03-10 17:18:12.402 And, people to pass them around 2017-03-10 17:18:17.477 to. 2017-03-10 17:18:18.446 So, what are the things you 2017-03-10 17:18:24.446 active listeners in the outer 2017-03-10 17:18:24.447 circle, quetsions, comments, 2017-03-10 17:18:30.449 thoughts you are having from 2017-03-10 17:18:30.45 that conversation way back 2017-03-10 17:18:31.449 there? 2017-03-10 17:18:31.449 If you would say your name at 2017-03-10 17:18:36.442 the top, that would be great. 2017-03-10 17:18:38.484 >> Jeremy, foundation for Art 2017-03-10 17:18:41.482 and healing. 2017-03-10 17:18:41.482 What I think is an important 2017-03-10 17:18:46.482 dialogue that was happening in 2017-03-10 17:18:46.483 the inner circle -- maybe I will 2017-03-10 17:18:51.558 make it personal, the people 2017-03-10 17:18:52.484 around the table -- so admiring 2017-03-10 17:18:55.484 of the work of people around 2017-03-10 17:18:58.487 cable. 2017-03-10 17:18:58.487 I want to thank them for that. 2017-03-10 17:18:58.488 I'm a medical practitioner, 2017-03-10 17:19:02.574 public health practitioner. 2017-03-10 17:19:02.575 And I'm also an artist, a poet. 2017-03-10 17:19:06.576 When you think about the work 2017-03-10 17:19:10.624 and his people were describing 2017-03-10 17:19:10.624 it around the table -- I think 2017-03-10 17:19:16.625 it's incontrovertible at this 2017-03-10 17:19:17.624 point that creative arts 2017-03-10 17:19:17.625 expression improves health and 2017-03-10 17:19:21.625 well-being for individuals and 2017-03-10 17:19:22.655 community. 2017-03-10 17:19:22.656 Lots of ways it does that. 2017-03-10 17:19:22.656 Growing evidence base to support 2017-03-10 17:19:25.699 it. 2017-03-10 17:19:25.699 Then there's also an important 2017-03-10 17:19:28.736 question, from the aesthetic 2017-03-10 17:19:31.735 point of view, is the art being 2017-03-10 17:19:33.741 produced important art, is it 2017-03-10 17:19:35.779 good art? 2017-03-10 17:19:36.781 ABS what Roman said about taking 2017-03-10 17:19:39.777 -- maybe it's what was said, 2017-03-10 17:19:47.826 having them be in dialogue with 2017-03-10 17:19:48.827 each other. 2017-03-10 17:19:48.827 There's no question in my mind 2017-03-10 17:19:49.828 that important and good art is 2017-03-10 17:19:52.825 being produced in this setting 2017-03-10 17:19:53.826 and it is serving a public 2017-03-10 17:19:53.826 health and mental requirement. 2017-03-10 17:19:55.823 I'm just wondering about the 2017-03-10 17:19:58.826 thoughts of other people, how we 2017-03-10 17:20:01.872 continue having those 2017-03-10 17:20:01.873 perspectives being dialogue, 2017-03-10 17:20:04.875 because I think they are equally 2017-03-10 17:20:05.872 important. 2017-03-10 17:20:06.873 >> Sam. 2017-03-10 17:20:18.907 Don't have a direct response to 2017-03-10 17:20:20.905 that treat them wanted to make a 2017-03-10 17:20:22.907 few quick notes, particularly on 2017-03-10 17:20:26.946 key strategies. 2017-03-10 17:20:26.946 We offer arts classes and 2017-03-10 17:20:30.947 workshops for veterans and their 2017-03-10 17:20:30.947 families as a means to help them 2017-03-10 17:20:35.952 reintegrate into their 2017-03-10 17:20:35.952 communities. 2017-03-10 17:20:35.953 We do standup comedy, improv, 2017-03-10 17:20:37.948 creative comedy, story writing. 2017-03-10 17:20:41.985 I wanted to hone in on the key 2017-03-10 17:20:41.986 strategies perspective. 2017-03-10 17:20:43.987 It was very programmatic in the 2017-03-10 17:20:46.988 conversation, but maybe not as 2017-03-10 17:20:48.987 much tactical, and wanted to say 2017-03-10 17:20:51.988 a few tactical things that have 2017-03-10 17:20:54.018 been helpful for us. 2017-03-10 17:20:54.989 Coordination is something we 2017-03-10 17:20:57.993 don't think about great how do 2017-03-10 17:21:00.055 you think about engaging the 2017-03-10 17:21:00.055 veteran in military community? 2017-03-10 17:21:02.985 For us, what has been helpful is 2017-03-10 17:21:07.985 forming relationships with the 2017-03-10 17:21:09.985 existing network of military and 2017-03-10 17:21:09.985 veterans service organizations 2017-03-10 17:21:12.984 in those communities straight 2017-03-10 17:21:14.986 having those lunchtime 2017-03-10 17:21:15.991 conversations with the leaders 2017-03-10 17:21:16.995 of those organizations so they 2017-03-10 17:21:16.995 build that trust with you so 2017-03-10 17:21:19.992 they refer members to their 2017-03-10 17:21:21.03 program -- to your program. 2017-03-10 17:21:23.03 Working with colleges, their 2017-03-10 17:21:32.046 coordinators, student veterans 2017-03-10 17:21:32.046 organizations, those are all 2017-03-10 17:21:35.034 really important. 2017-03-10 17:21:35.034 For our classes we typically 2017-03-10 17:21:38.035 have 10 to 15 people in each 2017-03-10 17:21:41.031 class. 2017-03-10 17:21:41.031 We get 30 to 45 applications for 2017-03-10 17:21:45.073 those classes. 2017-03-10 17:21:45.074 Demand is exceeding capacity 2017-03-10 17:21:48.125 when you use those channels. 2017-03-10 17:21:50.123 Another thing that didn't come 2017-03-10 17:21:52.124 up that maybe is implied is 2017-03-10 17:21:54.124 training, what are you doing to 2017-03-10 17:21:57.125 ensure the practitioners are 2017-03-10 17:21:58.122 equipped to work with that 2017-03-10 17:22:00.124 population? 2017-03-10 17:22:01.127 Trauma came up as one. 2017-03-10 17:22:03.157 Also, more broadly than military 2017-03-10 17:22:09.16 cultural competency. 2017-03-10 17:22:10.159 There are a lot of accessible 2017-03-10 17:22:10.16 trainings out there. 2017-03-10 17:22:12.166 It's free online trainings on 2017-03-10 17:22:15.156 military and veteran competency 2017-03-10 17:22:19.159 that I think if you feel you may 2017-03-10 17:22:19.159 have a knowledge gap, our 2017-03-10 17:22:23.157 professionals have found that 2017-03-10 17:22:23.158 really useful. 2017-03-10 17:22:27.157 The final thing I will note on 2017-03-10 17:22:27.158 programs is something that 2017-03-10 17:22:29.157 didn't come up, but 2017-03-10 17:22:30.197 accountability. 2017-03-10 17:22:30.198 Accountability for the 2017-03-10 17:22:34.199 instructors, but also for the 2017-03-10 17:22:36.199 people coming to the programs. 2017-03-10 17:22:37.2 There's an inclination sometimes 2017-03-10 17:22:42.198 to treat veterans differently. 2017-03-10 17:22:44.198 I don't think that should be the 2017-03-10 17:22:46.199 case. 2017-03-10 17:22:47.208 I think these are people who 2017-03-10 17:22:52.203 have contributed at a very high 2017-03-10 17:22:52.204 level when they were in the 2017-03-10 17:22:52.204 service, and we should expect 2017-03-10 17:22:56.239 that a large way when they come 2017-03-10 17:22:59.325 to our program. 2017-03-10 17:23:00.324 We ask them to commit to our 2017-03-10 17:23:01.325 classes. 2017-03-10 17:23:01.326 We say if you miss more than two 2017-03-10 17:23:05.326 classes, you are out. 2017-03-10 17:23:05.327 We call them if they are 5 or 10 2017-03-10 17:23:06.324 minutes late. 2017-03-10 17:23:07.327 Graduation rates are between 90% 2017-03-10 17:23:12.325 -- 90% and 95%. 2017-03-10 17:23:14.327 Final pieces like 2017-03-10 17:23:19.483 sustainability. 2017-03-10 17:23:19.484 That has kind of come up. 2017-03-10 17:23:20.379 There's been a lot in the art 2017-03-10 17:23:24.375 space about, we are going to do 2017-03-10 17:23:24.375 this workshop with you. 2017-03-10 17:23:25.379 What is next? 2017-03-10 17:23:27.374 How are you linking up with 2017-03-10 17:23:30.424 resources in that community, 2017-03-10 17:23:32.42 providing that sustainability. 2017-03-10 17:23:32.42 Figuring out what those back end 2017-03-10 17:23:38.421 partnerships look like, it's 2017-03-10 17:23:39.426 important to do justice to the 2017-03-10 17:23:39.426 people we are serving. 2017-03-10 17:23:41.423 >> Hre and back there. 2017-03-10 17:23:45.45 -- here and bck there. 2017-03-10 17:23:49.452 >> This was such a great 2017-03-10 17:23:54.451 conversation. 2017-03-10 17:23:54.452 Thanks so much. 2017-03-10 17:23:54.453 I have a comment but I also 2017-03-10 17:23:56.454 wanted to -- thinking about 2017-03-10 17:24:00.456 artistic quality. 2017-03-10 17:24:00.457 I don't think about, with this 2017-03-10 17:24:03.452 kind of work you think about -- 2017-03-10 17:24:05.451 as a curator, I think about 2017-03-10 17:24:08.49 quality in a different way. 2017-03-10 17:24:11.495 If I have an audience that looks 2017-03-10 17:24:12.494 like my other audiences, I have 2017-03-10 17:24:17.491 failed for this kind of work. 2017-03-10 17:24:18.494 I need a different combination 2017-03-10 17:24:20.503 of people. 2017-03-10 17:24:20.504 Tied to that is the way that I 2017-03-10 17:24:22.494 think about polity. 2017-03-10 17:24:24.493 For me quality has to do with 2017-03-10 17:24:28.512 engagement for this kind of 2017-03-10 17:24:28.512 work. 2017-03-10 17:24:28.513 I don't think about, is 2017-03-10 17:24:33.507 somebody's turn out perfect. 2017-03-10 17:24:34.533 I don't think about, is the 2017-03-10 17:24:35.549 addiction perfect? 2017-03-10 17:24:35.55 Those things help deliver the 2017-03-10 17:24:39.544 engagement but it's the 2017-03-10 17:24:39.544 engagement I'm really after. 2017-03-10 17:24:41.535 Really hearing this message 2017-03-10 17:24:43.536 about sustainability, building 2017-03-10 17:24:48.534 trust which takes time, about 2017-03-10 17:24:49.538 not being on that grant 2017-03-10 17:24:49.538 timeline. 2017-03-10 17:24:49.539 We all know those timelines. 2017-03-10 17:24:52.547 As more of a neophyte -- we will 2017-03-10 17:24:56.625 talk later on a different 2017-03-10 17:24:58.675 roundtable. 2017-03-10 17:24:58.675 The way I engage with this work 2017-03-10 17:25:01.679 I would say is periodic. 2017-03-10 17:25:03.678 I'm not a company founded to do 2017-03-10 17:25:07.678 this work. 2017-03-10 17:25:07.679 I do it as often as I can, but 2017-03-10 17:25:07.679 is not consistent. 2017-03-10 17:25:10.679 Are we at a place with the 2017-03-10 17:25:15.269 resources that exist where there 2017-03-10 17:25:15.749 is an understanding of that long 2017-03-10 17:25:19.785 trajectory that is needed, and 2017-03-10 17:25:20.827 if not, what can we do to get 2017-03-10 17:25:20.828 there? 2017-03-10 17:25:21.828 >> I rarely do this. 2017-03-10 17:25:34.826 I'm going to echo that point. 2017-03-10 17:25:39.999 There's a lot of good practical 2017-03-10 17:25:40 tangible stuff and the only 2017-03-10 17:25:41.882 thing I wanted to throw on 2017-03-10 17:25:42.875 there, the military knows the 2017-03-10 17:25:46.876 arts have practical value. 2017-03-10 17:25:46.877 At Maxwell Air Force Base there 2017-03-10 17:25:48.886 is a program where they set up 2017-03-10 17:25:50.934 one of those big faux villages 2017-03-10 17:25:53.935 and they bring military members 2017-03-10 17:25:55.928 through there, kind of cultural 2017-03-10 17:25:58.956 awareness. 2017-03-10 17:25:58.957 They bring groups through. 2017-03-10 17:26:00.95 You are supposed to try to 2017-03-10 17:26:01.95 negotiation a first time in 2017-03-10 17:26:05.991 country situation, water rights. 2017-03-10 17:26:07.034 Afterwards you bring it down, 2017-03-10 17:26:11.036 tell them these are the things 2017-03-10 17:26:15.04 that unite us as humans on this 2017-03-10 17:26:15.041 planet. 2017-03-10 17:26:15.041 This is what you do. 2017-03-10 17:26:20.117 Building those relationships, 2017-03-10 17:26:20.117 and if you need things to 2017-03-10 17:26:20.118 reference, look up great find 2017-03-10 17:26:24.039 out what the military already 2017-03-10 17:26:24.04 uses in those ways and say, we 2017-03-10 17:26:28.079 have this project for this 2017-03-10 17:26:28.08 program, and the thing that 2017-03-10 17:26:32.128 creates the issue -- being in 2017-03-10 17:26:32.128 the military, being kind of 2017-03-10 17:26:37.128 taken and controlled and put to 2017-03-10 17:26:37.129 do these things that normally 2017-03-10 17:26:38.128 people would not want to do to 2017-03-10 17:26:40.129 each other. 2017-03-10 17:26:40.13 You can say, you should then 2017-03-10 17:26:43.181 tell people to do these good 2017-03-10 17:26:43.181 things while they are out 2017-03-10 17:26:49.193 processing, approach these 2017-03-10 17:26:49.193 things at that point when you 2017-03-10 17:26:49.194 can force them to do it because 2017-03-10 17:26:52.236 they will be pains in the asses 2017-03-10 17:26:55.177 about it afterwards. 2017-03-10 17:26:55.178 If you need reference points, 2017-03-10 17:26:58.181 stuff like that, it sounds 2017-03-10 17:27:02.205 fantastic. 2017-03-10 17:27:02.205 I would love to touch base with 2017-03-10 17:27:03.204 you afterwards. 2017-03-10 17:27:04.204 It's already being done, we 2017-03-10 17:27:07.206 should do more of it. 2017-03-10 17:27:08.207 >> I forgot to say earlier the 2017-03-10 17:27:12.246 views I express are not the 2017-03-10 17:27:12.247 views of the dod, but they are 2017-03-10 17:27:14.248 personally my own. 2017-03-10 17:27:15.245 Now I can start. 2017-03-10 17:27:20.33 You all have such a dilemma in 2017-03-10 17:27:26.33 the art community. 2017-03-10 17:27:26.33 I'm not an artist. 2017-03-10 17:27:26.331 To be able to venture into the 2017-03-10 17:27:29.337 space of trauma and do so 2017-03-10 17:27:34.335 respectfully and not open up 2017-03-10 17:27:34.336 things that are inappropriate to 2017-03-10 17:27:34.336 open up, that is a difficult 2017-03-10 17:27:37.333 task.. 2017-03-10 17:27:39.377 Some concerns in terms of 2017-03-10 17:27:42.428 listening to the things we heard 2017-03-10 17:27:43.427 earlier, one has to be very 2017-03-10 17:27:43.427 careful. 2017-03-10 17:27:45.428 You are opening up the doors. 2017-03-10 17:27:45.428 You may not think you are 2017-03-10 17:27:49.425 opening the door, but that door 2017-03-10 17:27:51.433 is opening. 2017-03-10 17:27:51.434 You also are striving to get 2017-03-10 17:27:51.435 impactful information, you 2017-03-10 17:27:56.508 want to get stories, that 2017-03-10 17:27:59.465 emotional experience. 2017-03-10 17:27:59.466 It's a difficult dilemma to 2017-03-10 17:27:59.467 navigate with those service 2017-03-10 17:28:03.499 members. 2017-03-10 17:28:03.5 22 service members, active for 2017-03-10 17:28:03.5 prior, commit suis -- or prior, 2017-03-10 17:28:08.497 commit suicide a day. 2017-03-10 17:28:09.5 It is an acceptable -- and on 2017-03-10 17:28:14.499 acceptable number. 2017-03-10 17:28:14.499 We have to be mindful of the 2017-03-10 17:28:15.497 spaces you travel with folks who 2017-03-10 17:28:19.5 are already taking great steps 2017-03-10 17:28:19.501 to come to your area. 2017-03-10 17:28:22.499 Getting them out of the house, 2017-03-10 17:28:23.495 leaving the bunker so to speak, 2017-03-10 17:28:24.495 is taking a great risk on their 2017-03-10 17:28:28.629 part. 2017-03-10 17:28:28.629 To join their community and have 2017-03-10 17:28:28.63 certain questions, delves into 2017-03-10 17:28:31.626 perhaps on a level that is more 2017-03-10 17:28:31.626 clinical than it is not, I would 2017-03-10 17:28:35.634 caution and ask for a wise 2017-03-10 17:28:37.757 thought in terms of how you 2017-03-10 17:28:41.628 pursue digging further in your 2017-03-10 17:28:41.629 efforts to find impactful 2017-03-10 17:28:43.627 material for your 2017-03-10 17:28:44.676 representations. 2017-03-10 17:28:44.676 >> Hi. 2017-03-10 17:28:46.677 Actually one of the great 2017-03-10 17:28:51.752 strategies I was able to employ 2017-03-10 17:28:53.717 sitting here right next to me, 2017-03-10 17:28:57.71 this extraordinary human being 2017-03-10 17:29:00.709 who recognizes the value of the 2017-03-10 17:29:00.71 arts to affect social change, is 2017-03-10 17:29:06.748 a retired Lieutenant Colonel 2017-03-10 17:29:06.749 from the Army, 26 years in the 2017-03-10 17:29:10.751 service. 2017-03-10 17:29:10.767 As a producer who's going to all 2017-03-10 17:29:12.79 these different places, it's 2017-03-10 17:29:15.836 very difficult as I don't live 2017-03-10 17:29:16.836 in a particular place where I am 2017-03-10 17:29:19.843 bringing up performance. 2017-03-10 17:29:21.832 How do you then help to ensure 2017-03-10 17:29:24.84 those connections are valuable? 2017-03-10 17:29:24.841 As a middle-aged Jeiwshwish 2017-03-10 17:29:30.832 women, I can't be calling 2017-03-10 17:29:32.837 these service organizations and 2017-03-10 17:29:36.877 having an Acer credibility. 2017-03-10 17:29:37.927 I wish that wasn't true, but it 2017-03-10 17:29:37.928 is. 2017-03-10 17:29:37.928 It work very closely with art. 2017-03-10 17:29:42.037 We went to 40 cities around the 2017-03-10 17:29:43.934 country. 2017-03-10 17:29:43.935 Art was tireless in terms of 2017-03-10 17:29:48.93 working with civics 2017-03-10 17:30:44.086 literacy. 2017-03-10 17:30:44.086 .4% of the nation's public since 2017-03-10 17:30:52.123 September 11, 2001, served in 2017-03-10 17:30:53.123 uniform. 2017-03-10 the 2017-03-10 17:31:05.178 stories and the lives of their 2017-03-10 17:31:10.253 military service straight it's 2017-03-10 17:31:10.253 important today, since 1973 2017-03-10 17:31:13.177 became an all volunteer thing. 2017-03-10 17:31:15.181 We heard the example of civil 2017-03-10 17:31:16.177 war, everybody went to the war. 2017-03-10 17:31:17.178 Every male went to the war. 2017-03-10 17:31:20.18 That's not the case now. 2017-03-10 17:31:20.181 A small minority of people, this 2017-03-10 17:31:27.211 millennial generation have made 2017-03-10 17:31:27.211 a choice to serve great they did 2017-03-10 17:31:28.215 exceptionally well and now they 2017-03-10 17:31:32.255 are struggling to put the life 2017-03-10 17:31:33.251 spec together, find new meaning 2017-03-10 17:31:35.335 and opportunities to become a 2017-03-10 17:31:35.336 citizen again. 2017-03-10 17:31:36.337 Bass track was more of enhancing 2017-03-10 17:31:40.337 the nonveterans to understand 2017-03-10 17:31:42.337 who these people are. 2017-03-10 17:31:42.338 In this case, you are here to 2017-03-10 17:31:46.335 see it tomorrow. 2017-03-10 17:31:46.336 That is the story of two people 2017-03-10 17:31:51.335 that represents 4.1 million. 2017-03-10 17:31:52.341 I would throw out there to the 2017-03-10 17:31:53.336 artists that are presenting work 2017-03-10 17:31:55.336 that is not just therapy, but it 2017-03-10 17:31:58.382 is civic or social literacy. 2017-03-10 17:32:00.376 If we will move past a 2017-03-10 17:32:03.387 sympathetic approach towards an 2017-03-10 17:32:03.387 apathetic approach we know 2017-03-10 17:32:07.38 apathy is a better emotion to 2017-03-10 17:32:07.381 work with and learn a change 2017-03-10 17:32:08.377 than sympathy. 2017-03-10 17:32:10.379 It sucks to be you is not 2017-03-10 17:32:14.426 helpful to a veteran. 2017-03-10 17:32:14.427 Saying what can I do to help or 2017-03-10 17:32:22.481 make you part of my community, 2017-03-10 17:32:23.501 we need that, and that's a 2017-03-10 17:32:26.505 calling for the artist. 2017-03-10 17:32:29.51 And you for letting me share 2017-03-10 17:32:31.502 that -- thank you for letting me 2017-03-10 17:32:35.504 share that. 2017-03-10 17:32:35.504 >> And went to piggyback on the 2017-03-10 17:32:37.518 tail end of that. 2017-03-10 17:32:39.515 One of the important things that 2017-03-10 17:32:43.548 is often left out in this 2017-03-10 17:32:43.549 conversation, when we are 2017-03-10 17:32:47.649 looking at how do you reach 2017-03-10 17:32:47.65 across the lines between artists 2017-03-10 17:32:50.678 and military, because they seem 2017-03-10 17:32:50.678 so disparate and polar and 2017-03-10 17:32:55.68 separated from each other, first 2017-03-10 17:32:57.678 of all it's not. 2017-03-10 17:32:58.678 There is a very distinct 2017-03-10 17:33:03.678 commonality between the kinds of 2017-03-10 17:33:07.729 worlds that theater people 2017-03-10 17:33:08.728 living in and the kind of world 2017-03-10 17:33:08.728 that military people live in. 2017-03-10 17:33:09.868 I was theater and then I went 2017-03-10 17:33:14.727 into military and I came out of 2017-03-10 17:33:14.728 the military in theater. 2017-03-10 17:33:16.726 What true that through line for 2017-03-10 17:33:17.726 me is the teamwork, the 2017-03-10 17:33:20.725 structure, the knowing that as 2017-03-10 17:33:25.8 part of this team you have a 2017-03-10 17:33:25.801 specific function, and you are 2017-03-10 17:33:31.802 as part of your function you are 2017-03-10 17:33:31.803 serving the greater good of that 2017-03-10 17:33:31.803 team. 2017-03-10 17:33:32.795 There is a huge commonality 2017-03-10 17:33:35.851 within theater to draw that into 2017-03-10 17:33:39.844 the veteran community. 2017-03-10 17:33:40.841 And part of why that is 2017-03-10 17:33:43.925 necessary -- I want to piggyback 2017-03-10 17:33:46.837 on the tail end of this last 2017-03-10 17:33:46.837 discussion. 2017-03-10 17:33:51.912 All too often, amongst my fellow 2017-03-10 17:33:53.84 veterans, what I hear is that 2017-03-10 17:33:55.843 when we do these programs, it's 2017-03-10 17:33:58.891 always framed in the terms of 2017-03-10 17:34:01.881 let me help you, let me help 2017-03-10 17:34:01.881 you, let me help you. 2017-03-10 17:34:03.884 The fact is that most people 2017-03-10 17:34:06.879 that most people to sign up in 2017-03-10 17:34:07.884 this all volunteer army sign up 2017-03-10 17:34:10.882 to serve because they want to 2017-03-10 17:34:10.883 fulfill a valuable function. 2017-03-10 17:34:13.88 When they leave the military and 2017-03-10 17:34:16.928 they going to the civilian world 2017-03-10 17:34:19.929 and they are experiencing this 2017-03-10 17:34:19.93 cognitive dissonance, I'm in 2017-03-10 17:34:24.93 this structured world where I 2017-03-10 17:34:25.992 have this specific function and 2017-03-10 17:34:25.993 I'm serving this value, now 2017-03-10 17:34:29.934 suddenly I'm in a world that has 2017-03-10 17:34:29.935 no structure, a world where I am 2017-03-10 17:34:32.932 in a way functionless, I now do 2017-03-10 17:34:38.98 I maybe not see my value, but 2017-03-10 17:34:40.982 people are telling me I don't 2017-03-10 17:34:40.983 have that value because they 2017-03-10 17:34:40.983 have to help me. 2017-03-10 17:34:41.99 My question is, can we reframe 2017-03-10 17:34:46.048 this in a way where it's not 2017-03-10 17:34:50.049 about helping the veteran, but 2017-03-10 17:34:53.046 rather it's about the veteran 2017-03-10 17:34:55.048 helping to teach us, helping to 2017-03-10 17:34:58.06 teach the community and helping 2017-03-10 17:35:01.048 to bridge the gap of 2017-03-10 17:35:01.049 communication between the 2017-03-10 17:35:01.049 military and the community. 2017-03-10 17:35:03.05 That's what I have to say. 2017-03-10 17:35:06.049 Thanks. 2017-03-10 17:35:07.089 >> Did you have a comment? 2017-03-10 17:35:12.091 I thought I saw your hand up. 2017-03-10 17:35:15.089 Medicine and then -- Madison and 2017-03-10 17:35:20.09 then Bill. 2017-03-10 17:35:21.089 Madison: Hey. 2017-03-10 17:35:24.09 I'm going to jump right on that 2017-03-10 17:35:27.093 bandwagon. 2017-03-10 17:35:27.093 I was responding to you in your 2017-03-10 17:35:33.132 note about art and healing and 2017-03-10 17:35:35.131 being careful. 2017-03-10 17:35:35.132 One of the roles I think art and 2017-03-10 17:35:40.128 artists have always done, not so 2017-03-10 17:35:42.127 much with the goal to heal, but 2017-03-10 17:35:44.13 to make the invisible visible, 2017-03-10 17:35:48.131 which is what you're talking 2017-03-10 17:35:48.131 about. 2017-03-10 17:35:48.132 It's on some level so much 2017-03-10 17:35:51.13 simpler. 2017-03-10 17:35:52.131 There might be other journeys, 2017-03-10 17:35:55.133 that we are putting things on st 2017-03-10 17:35:58.131 age. 2017-03-10 17:35:58.132 There's a face, and is not one 2017-03-10 17:36:01.13 veteran. 2017-03-10 17:36:01.131 You can go, when I stand up and 2017-03-10 17:36:06.133 tell people I'm a veteran, they 2017-03-10 17:36:06.133 are like, I never would have 2017-03-10 17:36:10.133 thought that trigger I tell them 2017-03-10 17:36:10.134 I am in artist. 2017-03-10 17:36:11.133 -- that. 2017-03-10 17:36:12.147 I told him I am an artist. 2017-03-10 17:36:14.143 They can kind of see that. 2017-03-10 17:36:17.184 We all contain these invisible 2017-03-10 17:36:19.175 stories. 2017-03-10 17:36:20.185 We share what we want to share 2017-03-10 17:36:23.19 when we feel comfortable or we 2017-03-10 17:36:23.19 are outed or whatever the 2017-03-10 17:36:27.185 journey is. 2017-03-10 17:36:27.185 Making the invisible visible is 2017-03-10 17:36:31.188 what we are doing great healing 2017-03-10 17:36:33.181 can happen because of that. 2017-03-10 17:36:33.181 Empowerment can have an. 2017-03-10 17:36:34.181 Then we start getting some real 2017-03-10 17:36:36.184 equity in the conversation. 2017-03-10 17:36:39.258 >> so, first I want to say the 2017-03-10 17:36:44.34 NEA had nothing to do with the 2017-03-10 17:36:46.347 salty language in that poem 2017-03-10 17:36:47.346 earlier. 2017-03-10 17:36:48.343 We're clearing that. 2017-03-10 17:36:50.341 [LAUGHTER] 2017-03-10 17:36:50.342 So, a couple things. 2017-03-10 17:36:55.416 One of the things that having 2017-03-10 17:37:00.422 worked in the arts sector for 20 2017-03-10 17:37:03.381 years or so before I spent five 2017-03-10 17:37:03.382 years working more in the areas 2017-03-10 17:37:05.481 where you guys are, it's a 2017-03-10 17:37:09.481 difficult thing to separate out 2017-03-10 17:37:10.48 whether what we are doing is a 2017-03-10 17:37:12.51 focus on healing, or what we are 2017-03-10 17:37:17.585 doing is more focused on what I 2017-03-10 17:37:17.586 was trained to think of, let's 2017-03-10 17:37:21.516 examine the human experience in 2017-03-10 17:37:24.552 a way that allows us to 2017-03-10 17:37:26.548 understand ourselves better, and 2017-03-10 17:37:29.634 we don't shy away from the 2017-03-10 17:37:29.634 things that were the subject of 2017-03-10 17:37:33.683 the beginning of Western 2017-03-10 17:37:33.683 civilization, or people came 2017-03-10 17:37:35.682 back from Peloponnesian wars and 2017-03-10 17:37:39.681 wrote about it and processed it 2017-03-10 17:37:41.681 together in a big theater. 2017-03-10 17:37:42.682 One of the things it is 2017-03-10 17:37:46.729 interesting to me about the 2017-03-10 17:37:47.728 platforms that exist when you do 2017-03-10 17:37:49.905 bring people to those tables and 2017-03-10 17:37:49.905 art used to being there 2017-03-10 17:37:50.802 together, it creates a really 2017-03-10 17:37:52.844 unusual forum for what has 2017-03-10 17:37:56.844 become a fragmented society to 2017-03-10 17:37:59.843 get around something together, 2017-03-10 17:38:01.843 and it doesn't matter how you 2017-03-10 17:38:01.843 voted a couple months ago. 2017-03-10 17:38:05.844 You are all in it at the local 2017-03-10 17:38:06.841 community level. 2017-03-10 17:38:08.84 That's a healthy thing. 2017-03-10 17:38:11.84 We will talk more about this 2017-03-10 17:38:11.84 tomorrow. 2017-03-10 17:38:12.843 Immediately after the artist 2017-03-10 17:38:16.932 conversation here -- there's two 2017-03-10 17:38:19.927 ways to be thinking of art 2017-03-10 17:38:22.054 making in the setting we are 2017-03-10 17:38:24.981 talking about, especially if it 2017-03-10 17:38:26.982 has to do with trauma. 2017-03-10 17:38:28.982 They're not really diametrically 2017-03-10 17:38:33.981 opposed, but there are different 2017-03-10 17:38:38.011 rules that take place depending 2017-03-10 17:38:39.054 on who you are talking to and 2017-03-10 17:38:39.054 what the purpose is. 2017-03-10 17:38:43.052 If it's about healing, make sure 2017-03-10 17:38:43.053 you know that's what it is. 2017-03-10 17:38:43.053 If that's the case, there are 2017-03-10 17:38:50.055 prompts and things you can do 2017-03-10 17:38:50.056 that can lead someone on that 2017-03-10 17:38:50.056 journey. 2017-03-10 17:38:52.051 Other people who spend time -- 2017-03-10 17:38:59.052 in the military effort a lot of 2017-03-10 17:38:59.053 people -- I've heard a lot of 2017-03-10 17:39:02.055 people saying there is something 2017-03-10 17:39:07.13 bizarre about the fact that we 2017-03-10 17:39:08.053 are trying to run towards the 2017-03-10 17:39:08.053 bullet. 2017-03-10 17:39:08.054 We are trained in college to run 2017-03-10 17:39:10.053 towards the Samuel Beckett 2017-03-10 17:39:12.06 trauma situation, and that's not 2017-03-10 17:39:16.057 always the best thing for the 2017-03-10 17:39:16.058 person you are engaging. 2017-03-10 17:39:17.052 At the same time I do think I 2017-03-10 17:39:24.057 respond strongly to what you are 2017-03-10 17:39:25.054 talking about, sitting in a 2017-03-10 17:39:26.054 writing program for the last few 2017-03-10 17:39:27.094 years, I believe there is 2017-03-10 17:39:32.096 something about the wartime 2017-03-10 17:39:32.097 experience that shakes us loose 2017-03-10 17:39:36.103 from the coma we can walk 2017-03-10 17:39:37.099 through life in this 21st 2017-03-10 17:39:38.107 century way that we live it. 2017-03-10 17:39:38.108 It models the cage, makes you 2017-03-10 17:39:43.097 rethink things very deeply. 2017-03-10 17:39:47.098 I know a lot of the special 2017-03-10 17:39:48.1 operators who come through this 2017-03-10 17:39:48.1 writing program after having 2017-03-10 17:39:50.103 worked with a rights who had 2017-03-10 17:39:51.139 been through Brown, which I'm 2017-03-10 17:39:55.14 sure had a different kind of 2017-03-10 17:39:55.141 PTSD, they have an unfair 2017-03-10 17:39:59.14 advantage at this work that we 2017-03-10 17:39:59.14 do. 2017-03-10 17:39:59.141 They do have something to teach 2017-03-10 17:40:02.137 us. 2017-03-10 17:40:02.137 If we can recognize this notion 2017-03-10 17:40:07.136 of voyeuristic window into their 2017-03-10 17:40:13.138 illness, which can be really 2017-03-10 17:40:16.186 patronizing, and really kind of 2017-03-10 17:40:19.186 shallow, but if we recognize 2017-03-10 17:40:24.261 they actually live something, 2017-03-10 17:40:24.262 they can tell us about what a 2017-03-10 17:40:27.234 human being is, then we are all 2017-03-10 17:40:28.232 having a better conversation. 2017-03-10 17:40:30.234 >> That's great. 2017-03-10 17:40:32.234 Colleen over here. 2017-03-10 17:40:35.234 >> I just wanted to say two 2017-03-10 17:40:43.259 things. 2017-03-10 17:40:43.26 We have been doing this work for 2017-03-10 17:40:48.347 over 23 years. 2017-03-10 17:40:48.347 When you talk about consistency, 2017-03-10 17:40:50.261 I always ask the question to 2017-03-10 17:40:53.273 look back at your mission. 2017-03-10 17:40:53.273 The mission is connecting 2017-03-10 17:40:55.266 communities, and the military is 2017-03-10 17:40:58.307 one of those communities. 2017-03-10 17:40:58.308 The other thing I like to 2017-03-10 17:41:01.349 include in the conversation is 2017-03-10 17:41:03.393 the notion of military 2017-03-10 17:41:10.389 dependents. 2017-03-10 17:41:10.39 You did not go through that 2017-03-10 17:41:10.391 service alone. 2017-03-10 17:41:12.387 You might through it with your 2017-03-10 17:41:15.39 partners and your children. 2017-03-10 17:41:15.39 Those in the military know what 2017-03-10 17:41:18.394 canoe means. 2017-03-10 17:41:19.389 Your parent is there, and in the 2017-03-10 17:41:22.433 canoe is stable. 2017-03-10 17:41:25.469 Your parent leaves, the canoe is 2017-03-10 17:41:28.432 unstable. 2017-03-10 17:41:28.432 You figure out how to ride in it 2017-03-10 17:41:32.433 yourself and it becomes stable 2017-03-10 17:41:33.435 again. 2017-03-10 17:41:33.436 I would like to include 2017-03-10 17:41:34.483 dependence in this conversation 2017-03-10 17:41:36.482 as well. 2017-03-10 17:41:37.482 >> Is there a final comment? 2017-03-10 17:41:39.484 We are wrapping up, but I want 2017-03-10 17:41:43.482 to make sure everybody -- yes. 2017-03-10 17:41:44.484 Liz, go ahead. 2017-03-10 17:41:46.481 Didn't see you back there. 2017-03-10 17:41:49.514 >> I didn't hear your name. 2017-03-10 17:41:53.556 During this round of working 2017-03-10 17:42:04.557 with people, I started thinking 2017-03-10 17:42:06.558 a lot about what was it that 2017-03-10 17:42:07.56 people were missing when they 2017-03-10 17:42:07.561 came back. 2017-03-10 17:42:10.558 These are my words, not theirs. 2017-03-10 17:42:14.598 Risk, purpose, and love. 2017-03-10 17:42:15.613 When I thought about that, I 2017-03-10 17:42:18.598 thought, I'm addicted to risk, 2017-03-10 17:42:22.602 purpose, and love. 2017-03-10 17:42:23.601 That's why we do it over and 2017-03-10 17:42:25.601 over again. 2017-03-10 17:42:26.598 We are so fortunate to have 2017-03-10 17:42:30.6 that. 2017-03-10 17:42:30.601 All three of those things, in 2017-03-10 17:42:35.685 combination. 2017-03-10 17:42:35.686 The other comment I wanted to 2017-03-10 17:42:39.683 think about was, do we open to 2017-03-10 17:42:41.683 many doors? 2017-03-10 17:42:43.683 I believe the artistic process 2017-03-10 17:42:46.686 in its fullness adopts this 2017-03-10 17:42:49.682 dilemma. 2017-03-10 17:42:50.686 A person may fall apart, and I 2017-03-10 17:43:01.78 heard what Victoria said and the 2017-03-10 17:43:03.783 question, the playwright, the 2017-03-10 17:43:06.784 guy scuttling and making him 2017-03-10 17:43:09.79 uncomfortable, that is another 2017-03-10 17:43:11.787 way in which we have stepped 2017-03-10 17:43:11.788 over our line. 2017-03-10 17:43:11.789 The artistic process lets us go 2017-03-10 17:43:13.785 back in, try it again, say it 2017-03-10 17:43:16.783 again. 2017-03-10 17:43:16.784 In our world, I often say -- I 2017-03-10 17:43:19.811 put people entirely in charge of 2017-03-10 17:43:23.81 what it is they are saying and 2017-03-10 17:43:25.808 doing and talking about. 2017-03-10 17:43:25.808 Whether it's the military or old 2017-03-10 17:43:29.872 people, children in the hospital 2017-03-10 17:43:29.873 -- people are amazing what they 2017-03-10 17:43:33.81 will choose to say and when they 2017-03-10 17:43:33.81 will say it. 2017-03-10 17:43:33.811 But if this happens -- I don't 2017-03-10 17:43:38.811 know that they have gone too far 2017-03-10 17:43:41.854 . 2017-03-10 17:43:41.855 Sometimes we are afraid to feel 2017-03-10 17:43:42.854 it. 2017-03-10 17:43:42.855 Hold it, be with it. 2017-03-10 17:43:43.868 Someone said to me, this man 2017-03-10 17:43:46.896 whose brother -- he said, I'm 2017-03-10 17:43:49.907 not going to come see it unless 2017-03-10 17:43:53.893 you promise me somebody has 2017-03-10 17:43:54.892 healed. 2017-03-10 17:43:54.892 If I don't see somebody healed 2017-03-10 17:43:54.893 in your piece, I'm not coming. 2017-03-10 17:43:59.967 Does anybody get healed? 2017-03-10 17:44:00.892 I said to him, give me 24 hours. 2017-03-10 17:44:04.894 I have to think about this. 2017-03-10 17:44:07.894 I don't know. 2017-03-10 17:44:07.895 Then I came back with this thing 2017-03-10 17:44:08.893 about artistic process. 2017-03-10 17:44:11.892 I said, if you mean to people 2017-03-10 17:44:14.892 get over it and they are done 2017-03-10 17:44:15.895 with it, no. 2017-03-10 17:44:16.894 No one will get healed. 2017-03-10 17:44:19.894 But if you think people may be 2017-03-10 17:44:19.894 seen living with it, partnering 2017-03-10 17:44:22.892 with it, coming back to it, 2017-03-10 17:44:23.912 trying this way, yes. 2017-03-10 17:44:24.894 So there's somewhere in this 2017-03-10 17:44:30.892 question about the evolution of 2017-03-10 17:44:30.893 these things and how we handle 2017-03-10 17:44:34.936 the evolution that goes to your 2017-03-10 17:44:34.937 important question. 2017-03-10 17:44:36.937 >> I want to thank everyone. 2017-03-10 17:44:39.935 This was a great conversation. 2017-03-10 17:44:42.935 We will have a lot more 2017-03-10 17:44:45.935 opportunity both to hear from 2017-03-10 17:44:45.935 specific folks and talk together 2017-03-10 17:44:48.935 as a large group. 2017-03-10 17:44:49.935 Tomorrow will be quite full of 2017-03-10 17:44:51.936 that. 2017-03-10 17:44:52.934 Jamie, do you have some next 2017-03-10 17:44:56.982 steps for us? 2017-03-10 17:44:57.986 >> I do. 2017-03-10 17:44:59.989 It is 5:45. 2017-03-10 17:45:01.989 We are on time. 2017-03-10 17:45:04.04 We are going to go have dinner 2017-03-10 17:45:07.044 together, which is really 2017-03-10 17:45:09.033 exciting. 2017-03-10 17:45:09.034 The place we are going is a 2017-03-10 17:45:12.033 short walk from here, about 4 2017-03-10 17:45:15.041 blocks, if I had to ballpark it. 2017-03-10 17:45:17.034 Carl and David and Jane and the 2017-03-10 17:45:20.042 folks from NEFA are going to -- 2017-03-10 17:45:23.061 [NO AUDIO]
