Nonprofit professional theatres have expressed commitments to new voices and new visions, and promised more equitable and inclusive practice in building and supporting their teams. But what does equitable search and support really look like for artistic directors?

Seesaw Theatre Presents: the 8th Annual Inclusive Theatre Festival (ITF)! This event is a weekend-long conference celebrating the strides being made in inclusive and accessible theatre. ITF aims to bring together theatre artists and practitioners from across the country, giving us all the chance to learn about the amazing work being done and how we can also improve our own work while supporting marginalized communities. The conference is intended not only for theatre artists (students and professionals alike), but also for the disability community and their families, educators working with autistic and otherwise disabled individuals, and truly anyone interested in this ever-expanding and heartwarming field of inclusive theatre.

The American Society for Theatre Research (ASTR) 2023 Annual Conference hosted this important conversation on the state of theatre in the 21st Century with playwrights Christina Anderson, Lauren Yee, and Martyna Majok, moderated by conference program chair and Dean of Boston University's School of the Arts Harvey Young.

An evening celebrating the work of New York based international puppet theatre company Chinese Theatre Works and Washington's US Karagöz Theatre Company. Ayhan Hulagu (KTC), Kuang-Yu Fong, Stephen Kaplin (CTW) presented excerpts from their repertoires and demonstrated the puppets. The panel was joined by Prof. Marvin Carlson, editor of one of the latest Segal Center Publications: Turkish Traditional Theatre: Karagöz Puppet Plays.

Does a Middle Eastern and North African (MENA) leader necessarily mean it's easier for MENA work to get produced? How do MENA theatremakers and educators from K-12 to university settings navigate questions of cultural competency, representation, and omission? How can we work together with other networks of color towards shared goals for our communities? MENATMA presented a weekend of intercommunity dialogues, panels, and keynotes to explore the state of MENA theater and artist sustainability moving forward.

Villa Albertine presented the professional symposium Reciprocities: Making and Supporting Dance between France and the United States which livestreamed on the global, commons-based, peer produced HowlRound TV network. This two-day event features artists' dialogues as well as roundtables with experts on topics such as choreographing residencies, pedagogy as performance, acts of transmission, and curatorial ecologies.

Audiences are not “back” to pre-pandemic levels, and there may be a variety of compounding reasons why. ART/New York convened a panel of marketing specialists with an array of perspectives to talk about what’s working, what’s not, and what new strategies we might try in order to best reach and engage our audiences.

Far from being anonymous evaluators sitting behind a grant portal, grantmakers have an invaluable perspective regarding emergent trends, innovative solutions, and field-wide stumbling blocks. This panel, moderated by ART/New York co-executive director Talia Corren, assembles leading New York theatre funders to pull back the curtain on the peer-to-peer conversations happening in grantmaking circles.
