Calling Future American Theater Leaders

The Los Angeles Theatre Center (LATC) in downtown Los Angeles is looking for ten arts leaders of various backgrounds who represent the future leadership of the American theater to apply to our newly minted Artistic Leaders Fellowship. The Fellowship will take place from October 1 through November 21, 2014 at The LATC, and run concurrently with the 2014 LATC Encuentro— the largest National Latina/o theater festival in over twenty-five years. The forward-thinking vision of Artistic Directors is one of the most tangible ways that change has been enacted in our field. While the role of Artistic Director is most critical to a theater company’s success, there are few opportunities for young artists and leaders—particularly those of color—to learn this specialized skill-set outside of their day-to-day work commitments and the pressures of their home institutions. Acknowledging that by 2024 the ethnic and cultural demographic makeup of the United States is projected to look radically different, the American theater community needs more opportunities for leadership training that broadens the pool of artists ready to commit to key leadership positions. In light of these current realities, the LATC is partnering with The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation and the Latina/o Theatre Commons (LTC) to add a Fellowship component to the 2014 LATC Encuentro. Produced in association with the LTC, this groundbreaking festival will bring together over one-hundred artists from across the country to explore the multi-faceted Latina/o experience on stage—from violence at the border and pressing immigration concerns, to the complexities of romantic relationships and family dynamics. The festival features Pulitzer Prize-winning plays, English and Spanish language productions, devised theater, experimental work, ensemble driven work, and solo shows. A local partnership with the L.A. Unified School District will also ensure that 10,000 high school students will experience the festival through an exciting student matinee program.

Artistic Leaders Fellowship as part of the LATC 2014 Encuentro
October 1-November 21, 2014 (eight-week commitment).

Fellows will receive housing, travel, stipend, and a daily per-diem.

Fellows will gain experience and training in the day-to-day responsibilities of an Artistic Director of a robust polycultural theater center. Additionally, the fellows will serve as Artistic Directors for artist-to-artist encounters amongst the Festival participants. These cross-company collaboration workshops, comprised of the one-hundred Encuentro artists, will take place over the four weeks of the festival and culminate with a public presentation of ten newly devised pieces at the Latina/o Theatre Commons National Convening weekend, November 6-9.

Eligibility

• Have a track record of championing Latina/o performance (equal consideration will be given to all applicants regardless of race, ethnicity, sex, religion, and/or physical ability).
• Have a minimum of five years of professional experience as an artist, arts leader, or terminal degree in related field.
• Be a citizen or permanent resident of the U.S. at the time of application deadline (August 20, 2014).
• Not be enrolled full-time in an academic or conservatory training program during any part of the fellowship timeline (September 2014- December 2014).
• Be available to participate for the full eight weeks of the program in Los Angeles.
• Have the support from home organization, institution, or place of employment to participate in the fellowship.

Los becados recibirán adiestramiento en las responsabilidades diarias de un Director Artístico en un centro teatral policultural y robusto. Además, los becados servirán como directores artísticos de los encuentros de artistas individuales. Los talleres de varias compañías en colaboración, compuesto de más de cien artistas en el Encuentro, se llevarán a cabo durante las cuatro semanas del festival y culminarán con una presentación pública de 10 obras nuevas en el fin de semana de Noviembre 6-9 de la Convocación Nacional del Latina/o Theatre Commons.

Elegibilidad

• Evidencia de haber defendido y/o impulsado el performance Latina/o (se le dará consideración imparcial a todos los solicitantes sin importar la raza, el género, la religión, la etnicidad y/o impedimentos físicos.
• Tener un mínimo de cinco años de experiencia profesional como líder artístico, artista o tener un grado terminal en una disciplina relacionada. 
• Ser ciudadano o residente permanente de los EE.UU. a la fecha de vencimiento (20 de agosto, 2014).
• No estar matriculado en un programa académico o de conservatorio durante la beca. (septiembre 2014-diciembre 2014).
