CALLING UP organized a digital exchange with artists nationally responding to our ongoing crisis of gun and racial violence facilitated by Vidhu Singh, artist in residence at Brava Theater, and Claudia Alick, Executive Director of CALLING UP,  livestreamed from commons-based peer produced HowlRound TV network at howlround.tv on Thursday 7 June from 1:00 p.m. - 2:30 p.m. PDT (San Francisco) / 3:00 p.m. - 4:30 p.m. CDT (Chicago) / 4:00 p.m. - 5:30 p.m. EDT (New York).

According to Everytown for Gun Safety, every day ninety-six Americans are killed with guns. According to the Malcom X Grassroots Project, every twenty-eight hours a black person is killed by vigilante, security guard, or the police in the United States. These statistics are disturbing and unacceptable. Organizations and artists are working to improve our understanding of the causes of this violence and the means to reduce them. Collaborative art making and community conversation have been effective tools to work for change. Participating in this conversation will be powerful playwrights, producers, performers, and craft artists all responding with national collaboration and community impact. We will be discussing our ongoing national crisis of racial inequity and gun violence.

Joining online will be Stephanie Wilborn, producer of the Every 28 Hours Black Arts Festival; Vidhu Singh, director of Books’n’Bullets and After Orlando at Brava Theater; Lauren Gunderson of Natural Shocks, a national campaign of theater activism against gun violence; Cathy Deforest founder of Vision Quilt; Tiffany Antone, producer of The Protest Plays Project; Sara Trail, founder of Social Justice Sewing AcademyJesica La Rel, a recording artist that harnesses the power of music for social change; and Ayodele Nzinga, the creative driving force of The Lower Bottom Playaz.

We will also be sharing the conversation via Facebook Live from The Every 28 Hours Plays Facebook page.  Post questions to our event.
