@tension is a physical, intermedial/technological, ensemble creation with a small group of performers and technicians. The purpose of this project is to investigate society’s use and dependence on various social media platforms (i.e. Facebook, Twitter, Instagram etc.) and how social media constructs, disrupts, and remoulds identity. It is a blend of live physical performance in real life intersecting with live digital performance on screen. Through its social media presence, the show becomes its own character online. We hope to disrupt the normalcy of digital existence by bringing the audience into the hyper-real of the digital plane. With the omnipresence of social media and digital technologies, how we interact with each other is changing. But how we interact with ourselves is changing, too. The construction and negotiation of identity online is a contemporary and relevant topic. @tension seeks not to tell the audience, but to show them in real time how quickly we can lose control of ourselves, our image, and our reality. By the end of the performance, the audience will question which self and which existence is the real one: the digital or the physical.

The show will be livestreaming closing night on HowlRound TV. It is being performed in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada at the Second Playing Space (in the Timms Centre for the Arts at the University of Alberta campus).

#viralflock is an ad-hoc ensemble based in Edmonton, and the show is being presented by the new independent performance company Pretentious Productions.
