IETM—international network for contemporary performing arts—presented a Debate on Arts & Democracy from the opening plenary session of IETMBudapest livestreamed on the global, commons based peer-produced HowlRound TV network at howlround.tv on Thursday 5 November at 1 a.m.-3 a.m. PST (Los Angeles) / 4 a.m.-6 a.m. EST (New York) / 9 a.m.-11 a.m. GMT (London) / 10 a.m.-12 p.m. CET (Budapest) / 14:30-16:30 IST (New Delhi) / 17:00-19:00 SGT (Singapore) / 20:00-22:00 AEDT (Sydney).

On November 5-8, IETM gathers more than 400 performing arts professionals from all over the world in the city of Budapest, Hungary. The IETM meeting is organised in collaboration with Gobi Dance Theatre, PanoDrama, Pro Progressione, Sín Culture Centre, Placcc Festival.

IETM organise their plenary meeting at the same time and place as the Camp Meeting of Trans Europe Halles (European based network of cultural centres). It was decided to do so as a joint effort to draw attention to the values of civil society, human rights, and the importance of independent cultural creation and participation.

Before we dive into the meeting, a livestreamed plenary debate on November 5 at 10:00-12:00 CEST—will give us an insight into the country’s (cultural) policy. A wide range of Hungarian policymakers from various backgrounds will discuss the context of Hungary’s arts life. How do they interpret the role of the arts in Hungary and what is their vision on what the future will bring? How does politics impact the life of artists?

The session will be undertaken in collaboration with Trans Europe Halles.

IETM is a network of over 500 performing arts organisations and individual members (contemporary theatre, dance, circus, interdisciplinary forms, new media). It holds two plenary meetings a year in different European cities, and smaller meetings all over the world.
