Fierce Angels Feast is a celebration of the lives of seniors while they can still hear their applause. Double Nickels Theatre creates theatre from their memories.

You will meet nine “Fierce Angels” who will share vignettes from their remarkable lives and participate in this first read of the stories that will contribute to a stage production in September 2016. A special feature of this Feast is the participation of Fierce Angels across six generations of Black women. They range in age from 103 years Saging to 30 years Saging.

Dr. Sheri L. Parks is the author of Fierce Angels: Living with a Legacy from the Sacred Dark Feminine to the Strong Black Woman and will be one of the participants. The other “Fierce Angels” include Willy Wright—a seriously saging fashionista who is known for her fierce hats and still wears high heel shoes. Dr. Bernice Harper is an incredible saging social worker that earned a doctorate from Harvard in 1959 and still runs the foundation she founded. She takes the metro to her appointments and has no use for computers. We are also joined by Joy Ford Austin, Executive Director of the DC Humanities Council and Deborah Johnson, the owner and operator of Catering by Deborah. Monica Gaskin knows more about buying cars than you could imagine. Regan Ford is the Director of the Southeast Campus of the Levine School of Music and holds a graduate degree from the Corcoran School of Design. Antoinette Ford is an Oceanographer who became a businesswoman who founded Double Nickels when she became a caregiver. Bringing up the rear is our youngest “Fierce Angel,” Megan Merchant. She is an arts administrator with the Washington Performing Arts, a significantly involved volunteer with creative aging projects, and an intern with Double Nickels Theatre Company.

The “Fierce Angels” represent six living generations and will explore any topic that enriches the history of what it means to be celebrated as a Fierce Angel.

As Dr. Parks has said, “with world-wide attention being paid to race in the US, it is imperative that we go beneath the surface to see the lives of Black Women and the stories they tell, to see the texture of their lives, their resilience, and their wisdom.”

And Double Nickels Theatre will capture these stories and stage the production of this important part of our history. Through Reminiscence Theatre we will celebrate the lives of these “Fierce Angels.”
