Courtney Sale joined MRT in March of 2020 following a national search. Past leadership experience includes serving as the Artistic Director of Seattle Children's Theatre and the Associate Artistic Director at Indiana Repertory Theatre. Under her tenure at these institutions she placed commissions with playwrights including Trista Baldwin, Ramon Esquival, Vichet Chum, Idris Goodwin, Allison Gregory, Karen Hartman, James Still, and Cheryl L. West. A director with a strong interest in new plays, her select credits include; Tiny Beautiful Things (Seattle Repertory Theatre), Support Group for Men, The Cake, Not Medea, Wild Horses (Contemporary American Theatre Festival), The Little Prince, Black Beauty (Seattle Children’s Theatre), April 4, 1968: Before We Forgot How to Dream, The Mountaintop, The Mousetrap (Indiana Repertory Theatre). On Clover Road, Mr. Burns, A Post Electric Play (The Phoenix Theater). With the Duplicates, she has co-created The Fictional Life of Historical Oddities, September Play, The Man with the Dancing Eyes, and The Poison Squad (Austin Critics Award). She has developed new work at New Plays for Young Audiences at NYU/Provincetown Playhouse, NW Playwrights at Seattle Repertory Theatre, Dorset Theatre Festival, Denver Center Theatre Company’s Summit New Play Festival, The New Harmony Project, Write Now, and The Orchard Project. Her production of Kristen Kosmas’ The Scandal was nominated for a New York Innovative Theatre Award. Other awards included Indianapolis Business Journal’s Forty Under Forty Designation and Cornish College’s Distinguished Alumni Award. She is a proud member of SDC and the National Theatre Conference. Ms. Sale holds a BFA from Cornish College of the Arts, and an MFA in Directing from the University of Texas at Austin.
