Writer, playwright and Stage director. General and artistic director of the Kigali Triennial
Dorcy Rugamba is a Rwandan writer, actor, and director, internationally acclaimed for his profound engagement with memory and resilience through the arts. Trained in performance by his father, Cyprien Rugamba, and a graduate of the Royal Conservatory of Liège, he has built a career that bridges continents and cultures.
His major works — Rwanda 94 (co-author), Bloody Niggers, and The Supreme Remains — confront mass violence, colonial legacies, and the restitution of African heritage, touring extensively across Europe and Africa.
In 2012, he founded Rwanda Arts Initiative to foster cultural entrepreneurship across the continent. Throughout his career, Rugamba has collaborated with leading figures such as Peter Brook, Milo Rau, Damon Albarn, or Yoshi Oida, presenting his work at major venues including Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris, the Young Vic in London, the Adelaide Festival, and the Festival d’Avignon.
In 2024, he launched the Kigali Triennial, a multidisciplinary arts festival, and published “HEWA RWANDA: A Letter to the Absent”, a poignant tribute to his family’s story.
Through his work, Dorcy Rugamba continues to champion the transformative power of art to heal, provoke dialogue, and reimagine societies.
