Gabriel Jason Dean

Gabriel Jason Dean is a Brooklyn / Austin based theatremaker who originally hails from Atlanta. His plays have been produced or developed at New York Theatre Workshop, McCarter Theatre, Lark, Page 73, The FleaOregon Shakespearethe Kennedy CenterPlayPennThe Playwrights’ Center, Abingdon Theatre, Red Orchid TheatreAurora TheatreDallas Children’s TheatrePeople’s LightActor's ExpressSource Festival and others. Gabriel is the recipient of the 2014-15 Hodder Fellowship from Princeton University.  His play JAVAANEH (IN BLOOM) was a finalist for the Laurents / Hatcher Award, received the Kennedy Center’s Paula Vogel Prize, was Runner-Up for the New Dramatist’s Princess Grace Award, and is currently optioned for Broadway.  Another play, D’ANGELICO is currently under option with Riovey Films with Gabriel as screenwriter.  His play for children, THE TRANSITION OF DOODLE PEQUEÑO received the 2013 American Alliance for Theatre & Education Distinguished Play Award, the 2011 New England Theatre Conference Aurand Harris Award and was selected for the 2012 Kennedy Center New Visions / New Voices Conference, Theatre for Young Audiences Award and was Runner-Up for the Harold & Mimi Steinberg National Playwriting Award.  He is the recipient of the Essential Theatre New Play Prize and Austin's 2013 B. Iden Payne Award for "Best Original Script" and "Best Comedy" for QUALITIES OF STARLIGHT, and his play PIGSKIN won the Samuel French Off-Off Broadway Festival. Other awards include the Kennedy Center’s Ken Ludwig Prize for a body of work from an emerging writer, Sallie B. Goodman Fellow at McCarter Theatre, Dramatist's Guild Fellow, “Favorite Local Playwright” in Creative Loafing--Atlanta, the James A. Michener Fellowship. Other plays have been finalists or semi-finalists for the Seven Devils ConferenceThe O’Neill Theatre Conference, Portland Center Stage’s JAW Festival, Bay Area Playwright’s FestivalInteract’s 20/20 Commissions, Page 73 Fellowship and Aurora Theatre Global Age Project.
