Greg Giovanni

Greg Giovanni is a theater artist who has worked in Philadelphia for over 25 years. Beginning with his groundbreaking Big Mess Theatre Co. in 1988, he has written and produced dozens of plays. In 2009, The Painted Bride Arts Center presented a retrospective of his work. In 2002, he became an Independence Foundation Fellow which allowed him to travel to Japan to study traditional theater performance. Greg attended the first Noh Playwright’s Workshop in Tokyo where he began work on Pine Barrens; a play that was to receive a full professional Noh performance in 2006.

Some might point out that Noh lacks the excess of Gothic. There is no visual, aural, or excess of story, but one cannot deny the emotional excesses of the tortured soul, the ecstatic god, the deranged woman. The emotional excess in Noh is so restrained that it feels, somehow, more Gothic than, say, the ravings of a mad scientist.
