Jennifer Barclay is a DC-based playwright, NNPN Affiliated Artist, Dramatists Guild Member, Co-Founder / Co-Director of the Not Beckett International Festival, and an Associate Professor of Playwriting at the University of Maryland where she heads Theatre Performance. 

Jennifer Barclay is a Washington, DC-based playwright. Her play Ripe Frenzy won the National New Play Network (NNPN) Smith Prize & Dramatists Guild Fund Writers Alliance Grant & had a 2018 NNPN Rolling World Premiere across the U.S. Her plays have been produced / developed by Woolly Mammoth, Steppenwolf, La Jolla Playhouse, The Old Globe, The Kennedy Center, Center Stage, The International Theatre of Vienna and The Edinburgh Fringe, among others. Other awards: Samuel Goldwyn, Kennedy Center and Pinter Review. Fellowships: MacDowell Colony (twice), Hawthornden International Writers Retreat. Residencies: South Coast Rep, Center Stage, Arena Stage. Education: Northwestern University (BS) & UC San Diego (MFA with Naomi Iizuka). She’s currently the Co-Creative Director / Co-Founder of the 2024-25 four-country year-long Not Beckett International Rolling World Premiere festival. Jennifer is an NNPN Affiliated Artist, Dramatists Guild Member, and an Associate Professor of Playwriting at the University of Maryland where she heads Theatre Performance.

The International Reach of National New Play Network’s Rolling World Premiere Model

Playwright Jennifer Barclay co-founded the Not Beckett International Rolling World Premiere Festival, inspired by National New Play Network (NNPN)’s Rolling World Premiere program. She sat down with NNPN executive director Nan Barnett to discuss the inception of the program and how it inspired the new festival.
