Jesse Portillo

Jesse Portillo is a freelance lighting designer and on the faculty of the University of Utah's Department of Theatre. Jesse holds a Master of Fine Arts from Indiana University, and a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of Utah. Jesse is the Resident Lighting Designer for Plan-B Theatre Company and frequently works with the Salt Lake Acting Company. Previous design work includes companies such as Pioneer Theater, Mobile Opera, Repertory Dance Theater, Utah Festival Opera and Musical Theater, LOOK Musicals, Arizona Broadway Theater, and Samba Fogo.

Jesse has also served as a guest artist/lecturer for Idaho State University, Baylor University, and Millikin University. Prior to joining the faculty of the University of Utah, Jesse was awarded two FAIR Lighting Design Fellowships at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival, where he assisted on many productions over two seasons.  He is a proud member of United Scenic Artists Local 829 and is an active member of the United States Institute for Theater Technology, where he is a Vice Commissioner for Lighting, and a member of the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Committee.
