Kevin McCray was born in Newark, New Jersey, and grew up amid poverty and violence. After losing his first love at 16 and being expelled from two high schools, he was arrested at 18—a turning point that led to profound change. While incarcerated, Kevin earned his GED and associate’s degree with honors, tutored others, and transformed his nickname “V1,” from “The Violent One,” to “The Victorious One.” Despite losing both parents and a sister while incarcerated, he persevered. After serving 30 years in prison, Kevin was released from prison and got his bachelor's degree from Rutgers University. Kevin is the lead instructor for the Reengagement Center in Newark where he tutors those pursuing their diploma. Kevin's aim is to become a math educator.
