Laura Grothaus is a writer and artist living in Baltimore, the territory of the Susquehannock and Piscataway-Conoy. Interested in the politics of magic and memory, she’s at work on a speculative novel about the future of labor movements.

Her work has been featured by or is forthcoming in American Short Fiction, Ninth Letter, 32 Poems, Poetry Northwest, The Cincinnati Review, Pleiades, BUST, Strange Horizons, and Fairytale Review. Kelly Link selected her as the winner of the 2024 Halifax Ranch Prize from American Short Fiction.

Collaborations are key to her practice. As a teacher, she’s partnered with kindergarteners, college students, and everyone in between. Her Baltimore writing workshop for adults has fostered the creation of several full-length manuscripts. She's co-directed plays, illustrated books, performed in train cars, and otherwise made a ruckus.

18 August 2025

“If your body is a portal, where does it lead?” This question led the creation of Paradise Portals, an immersive performance and dance party featuring Baltimore-area trans and queer artists. Laura Grothaus captures some of these artists’ answers, which span the celebration, transformation, ecology, and even escape.
