Lisa Merrill, PhD, is a theatre historian and Professor of Rhetoric and Performance Studies at Hofstra University. She publishes widely on nineteenth-century representations of gender and race on and offstage.  Her book, When Romeo was a Woman: Charlotte Cushman and her Circle of Female Spectators, was awarded the Joe A. Calloway Prize.
