On 8 June 2026, TORCHES continues with a conversation with playwright and artistic director and producer of the award-winning New Georges, Susan Bernfield.
Susan Bernfield is artistic director/producer of New Georges, one of New York City's premiere “downtown” theatre companies, a pivotal home and launchpad for some of the most acclaimed theatre artists working today. Since 1992, she has championed three generations of adventurous women+ theatre artists and originated hundreds of ambitious new plays, with impact that reaches every corner of the culture. She is a playwright/solo performer whose work has been presented by EST/First Light Festival, O’Neill National Playwrights Conference, People’s Light and Theatre, New Harmony Project, Caltech/Pasadena Playhouse, Huntington Theatre Company, New Georges (naturally), and more. She serves as President of ART/New York, the service organization for New York City's nonprofit theaters; past president of National Theatre Conference; on the board of the Assembly; was a founding board member of Indie Theater Fund (now IndieSpace) and co-founder/original cohort member of the Pool, a pop-up theater company. She is the recipient of Obie and Lilly awards.
