During Alej's undergraduate studies at Yale University, they were the student president of the following student groups: Not-So-Straight-Frosh, GaYalies!, the Yale University Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans, and Queer Student Cooperative, the Bad Romantics (Yale first queer cabaret and burlesque troupe), and Ballet Folklorico Mexicano de Yale. Alej performed with the Yale Symphony Orchestra and Heartland Philharmonic Orchestra. Alej is a nightlife event host at the House of Loom which is a club for a mixed crowd of LGBTQIAA+ and straight patrons (Omaha, Nebraska).
They are a member of the planning committee for the Trans Day of Visibility in Omaha, Nebraska. Alej completed a research trip titled "Contemporary Ethnographic Performance Methodologies in London" funded by the University of Nebraska at Omaha's Office of Research and Creative Activity via the Graduate Research and Creative Activities grant, supplementing their Masters of Art in Theatre studies. They describe themselves as a trans and bisexual rights activist, pin-up enthusiast, gender studies and performance scholar.
