Richard Washer

Playwright, Educator, Associate Artistic Director and First Draft Resident Playwright at The Rose Theatre Co.

Richard Washer, playwright, educator and director, serves as Associate Artistic Director and First Draft Resident Playwright at The Rose Theatre Company. His produced full-length plays include Missa, Of a Sunday Morning, Monkeyboy (co-written with Keith Bridges and Chris Stezin), The Fetish, Getting It, and Quartet. Other plays include The Silence of Other Voices, Dancing, The Migrant, Shalimar, Loops, Elegy and Fulcrum. While his focus has been on new plays, he has directed productions of musicals, classics, and dozens of readings. He was a founding member of Charter Theatre, a professional theatre company devoted to the development and production of new plays in the years between 1997 and 2008. Richard teaches creative writing and playwriting workshops at numerous institutions including the Rose Theatre Company, The Algonkian Writer Retreat, and The Writer’s Center in Bethessda, Maryland. Richard Washer is a Washington fixture, having worked in the Washington, D.C. area for more than thirty years as a playwright, director, dramaturg, and educator. He is humble, unassuming, and quietly essential to many in the DC area who are developing new plays.
