4th Symposium of Doctoral Programs in Theatre and Performance Studies

Tufts University

Friday 5 October - Saturday 6 October 2018

The graduate program in Theatre and Performance Studies at Tufts University presented the 4th Symposium of Doctoral Programs in Theatre and Performance Studies livestreaming on the global, commons-based peer produced HowlRound TV network at howlround.tv Friday 5 October - Saturday 6 October 2018.

The 4th Symposium of Doctoral Programs in Theatre and Performance Studies is a convening held every three to four years, gathering program directors from across the United States and Canada to discuss critical issues in doctoral-level education. This year's convening addresses the state of the academic job market within and beyond the academy as well as best practices for engaging in professionalization with our graduate students. The conference will foster dialogue through presentations and roundtable discussion groups on topics such as the placement rates of every PhD in Theatre and Performance Studies in the United States from 2011 to the present, professionalization practices in our own programs, PhD program advocacy in the wake of Indiana University’s elimination of the PhD in Theatre History, and more. Through this gathering we encourage participants to promote their program, learn from each other, reevaluate their assumptions, and continue to communicate both scholarly and personally after the conference.
