The Stone Center for Latin American Studies, The Cuban and Caribbean Studies Institute of Tulane University (New Orleans, Louisiana), and Estudio Teatral Macubá presented Canales Abiertos 2022 livestreaming on the global, commons-based, peer-produced HowlRound TV network at howlround.tv on Saturday 9 July at 7 a.m. PDT (Los Angeles, UTC -7) / 9 a.m. CDT (Mexico City, UTC -5) / 10 a.m. EDT (Santiago de Cuba, UTC -4).
Given the social transformation society has undergone as the pandemic continues to evolve, our annual event was revised. For the first time, the event featured a hybrid meeting format with more than twenty participants online and twenty participants face-to-face in the studio space of our partners at Lia Videos in Santiago de Cuba. The agenda was also revised to allow for future planning and organization.
The first part of the agenda (three hours, fifteen minutes) is a modified version of our usual public workshop (opening, two roundtables, two somatic sessions).
The second part of the agenda (one hour, fifteen minutes) is a planning meeting specifically for Open Channels members and others who want to be stakeholders in the future of the project.
As always, the purpose of this event is to criss-cross boundaries, to share work, to dialogue, to strategize, and in so doing to connect islands and diasporas by recognizing both our similarities and differences. We seek to explore the current landscape of practices, documentation, and dissemination of popular and resistance theater; recognize specificities of social, cultural, geographical and political context; identify future opportunities for exchange and learning; and promote the notion of a broader transnational Caribbean.
