Tlaloc Rivas presented the Latinx Superfriends Playwriting Hour with Fernanda Coppel livestreamed on the global, commons-based, peer-produced HowlRound TV network at howlround.tv on Monday 22 June 2020 at 3 p.m. EDT (New York) / 2 p.m. CDT (Chicago) / 1 p.m. MDT (Denver) / 12 p.m. PDT (Los Angeles) / 20:00 BST (London, UTC+1) / 21:00 CEST (Berlin, UTC+2).
Latinx Superfriends Playwriting Hour is a Latinx-led playwriting series featuring writers/theatremakers from across the U.S. to share writing practices, experiences, and insightful anecdotes of practice, process, and inspiration.
Each week one playwright will each bring their own views on how to write dramatic texts, offering tips and prompts via their own particular social consciousness, approaches to theatrical style and form, and how to communicate to your intended audiences. The series is intended for aspiring writers, students of dramatic writing, or for anyone interested creating thoughtful, visceral, and unique blueprints for performance, whether for the stage, screen or other media.
Tlaloc Rivas (curator) and Thea Rodgers (moderator) will be online via HowlRound during each session.
Fernanda Coppel is a playwright and screenwriter. Her play King Liz received its world premiere at Second Stage Theatre in an acclaimed, extended run in the summer of 2015. King Liz was sold to Showtime and is being developed into a half hour comedy-drama. Fernanda was a writer-producer on both the series "Queen of the South" on USA network and the upcoming Jason Katims and Jeffrey Seller NBC series “Rise”. She's written for “From Dusk Til Dawn” for Robert Rodriguez and the El Rey network, Shonda Rhimes's “How to Get Away with Murder” on ABC, DirecTV’s “Kingdom,” and “The Bridge” on FX. Her professional New York debut Chimichangas and Zoloft premiered at the Atlantic Theater Company in 2012 and is published by Samuel French. Fernanda’s work has been developed at New York Theatre Workshop, Pregones Theater, INTAR Theatre, The Juilliard School, The Lark Development Center, the Flea, the Old Vic (London), Naked Angels, Rattlestick Playwrights Theater, and the Sundance Institute. Fernanda is a member of the MCC Playwrights' Coalition and was a member of the Old Vic's US/UK TS Eliot Exchange Program. Her work has won the Asuncion Queer Latino Festival at Pregones Theater, the 2012 HOLA Award for Outstanding Achievement in Playwriting, and the 2012 Helen Merrill Award. She was a three-year Lila Acheson Wallace Playwriting Fellow at The Juilliard School and received her MFA in Dramatic Writing from New York University.
WHAT HAPPENS DURING 'LATINX SUPERFRIENDS PLAYWRITING HOUR'
Each session will be one hour. Each program will be livestreamed via Zoom sessions and the HowlRound livestream. The general format will be that each playwright will spend the first half of each session taking you through writing exercises, prompts, etc. and during the second half will answer any questions the online Zoom audience and online social audience might have regarding their own work and their own creative process (format is also subject to change because each writer is unique!). Please note: due to the nature of the session, each playwright will focus on answering questions about being a writer and the writing process and will not be offering critiques on any written work.
