After moving their Summer Leadership Institute (SLI) to New Orleans in response to the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, Urban Bush Women (UBW) is coming home to Brooklyn! SLI is UBW’s annual 10-day intensive that serves as the foundation for all of their community engagement activities. SLI builds the global network of community arts practitioners, and what UBW founder Jawole Willa Jo Zollar calls “front line social justice workers,” by connecting dance professionals and community-based artists in a learning experience that leverages the arts as a vehicle for social activism and civic engagement. This return to Brooklyn signals an opportunity for UBW to strengthen and re-engage their core arts community of NYC. The Culminating Public Performances include all participants and use music, dance, theatre, visual design, and spoken word to address this year’s theme You, Me, We: Understanding Internalized Racial Oppression and How it Manifests in Our Artistic Community.
