Urban Bush Women is engaging in a dynamic and groundbreaking partnership with Projecting All Voices at Arizona State University, an initiative launched by ASU’s Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts and supported by ASU Gammage and Center for the Study of Race and Democracy.

The institute will delve deep into its theme, You, Me, We- Understanding Internalized Racial Oppression and How It Manifests in Our Artistic Communities. Both UBW and ASU’s Projecting All Voices are interested in discovering the ways in which institutions can move beyond diversity initiatives and become organizations that lead in examining structural racism and its impact on our curriculums, programing, organizing and art-making practices. The urgency of addressing racial oppression is a clarion call to our arts community. Together, we will examine Internalized Racial Oppression as it manifests both for People of Color and White people and how these manifestations show up in our organizing, creations and collaborations. We will metaphorically explore the beauty of the desert to begin a process of stripping away the impact of racism.  We will focus on how we bring transformation and healing to ourselves, our communities and our institutions and organizations. Does our work challenge or recreate dominant frameworks and systems of policing that ignore history, culture, power and lineage? How can we explode predetermined expectations, restore our full humanity and activate our true strength?

This year, SLI will include three free events that are open to the public, beginning with the Opening Performance, Urban Bush Women and Voices from the Bush with Special Guests including Yvonne Montoya, Anne Pesata, Rulan Tangen, and Salt River Pima - Maricopa Indian community on Saturday, July 21 at 7:30 pm, at the Nelson Fine Arts Center, 51 E 10th Street, Tempe, Arizona, 85281.

On Tuesday, July 24 at 7 pm, there will a free public screening of the documentary Forbidden: Undocumented and Queer in Rural America in Room 116 of the Building Administration C-Wing, 400 E Lemon Street, Tempe, AZ 85281. The feature length documentary follows the journey of activist Moises Serrano and is directed by Tiffany Rhynard. The screening will be followed by a discussion with the director and community panelists.

We will also host two SLI Culminating Performances on Saturday, July 28, 2018 at 4 pm and 7:30 pm at the Nelson Fine Arts Center. The Culminating Public Performances include all participants and use music, dance, theater, visual design and spoken word to address this year’s theme You, Me, We: Understanding Internalized Racial Oppression and How it Manifests in Our Artistic Community. All ages are welcome, but due to the sensitive and mature nature of the content, please be advised to bring children at your own discretion.
