HowlRound in the Classroom

Welcome, theatre educators!

We are so glad you're here! You are a hugely important part of the HowlRound community—in fact, according to our yearly community surveys, over half of those who engage with HowlRound identify as educators.

In 2021, coinciding with the publication of our anthology Essays and Conversations from the First Ten Years, we commissioned six lesson plans, intended for use in college and university classrooms, from theatre educators and curriculum writers Emi Aguilar and Meg Greene. Topics are:

  1. Accessing Character: Igniting Creativity through Disability and Climate Justice
  2. Applied Drama and Theatre in Action
  3. Collective Envisioning or Undoing the American Theatre
  4. Decolonizing the American Theatre
  5. Programming and Pitching a Season
  6. Reorienting Directing Moving Towards New Directing Practices

In 2024, we released another six! Topics are:

  1. Place-Based Theatre: Possibility and Resistance
  2. Whiteness is Not the Standard: Disruptions from Black, Indigenous, and People of Color Theatremakers
  3. Climate Justice in Theatre
  4. Embracing Community: Radical Accessibility Through Hyperlocal Performance
  5. Going Beyond Diversity Statements
  6. Activating Technology to Ignite Stories and Engage Community

Have you tried any of them out? Let us know how it went!
