Anti-Oppression in the Performing Arts LAB with Lavie Williams

A two hour learning session guiding performers to consider how whiteness, tokenization, appropriation and allyship manifest in their arts practices

Thursday 9 July 2020

Kingston Circus Arts and anARC Theatre presented Anti-Oppression in the Performing Arts LAB with Lavie Williams livestreamed on the global, commons-based, peer produced HowlRound TV network at howlround.tv on Thursday 9 July 2020 at 8 a.m. PDT (San Francisco, UTC-7) / 10 a.m. CDT (Chicago, UTC-5) / 11 a.m. EDT (Kingston, UTC-4).

The content of this session is designed to energize participants towards prioritizing anti-oppressive practices. Here we engage with how oppression and racism are specifically related to exclusion while simultaneously considering the narratives that influence our understanding of oppression/racism.

Participants will reflect on key concepts – whiteness, tokenization, appropriation, allyship – and how they manifest in the performing arts, in addition to the impact they have on performers. Participants will be asked to consider what an anti-oppressive environment should look like and what action needs to be taken to foster that.

Prior to the LAB, participants are encouraged to complete this free interactive e-module on racism offered by the Ontario Human Rights Commission and to watch the following short video on intersectionality.

This LAB is offered as part of the coLABoratory: the creation process for a new work in Kingston, ON. This co-created work will creatively present selected underrepresented historical figures and stories using narrative, descriptions, sound and circus-inspired movement. It will also feature creative ASL stories and interpretations, as well as enhancements for blind audiences.

Thank you to the Kingston Arts Council and the Ontario Arts Council - Conseil des arts de l'Ontario for your generous support.
