with playwright Lauren Gunderson

Friday 8 May 2020

Playwright Lauren Gunderson presented Devised Theatre Class with Erika Chong Shuch and Ryan Tacata livestreamed on the global, commons-based, peer-produced HowlRound TV network at howlround.tv on Friday 24 April 2020 at 2 p.m. PDT (San Francisco, UTC-7) / 4 p.m. CDT (Chicago, UTC-5) / 5 p.m. EDT (New York, UTC-4) / 22:00 BST (London, UTC+1) / 23:00 CEST (Berlin, UTC+2).

From Lauren:

I'm going to learn about the powerful theatrical form of **devised theatre** because - though I adore experiencing is an audience member - I don't know anything about how to make it. Join me in learning from the best!

Erika Chong Shuch is a performance maker, choreographer and director whose topic-driven ruminations coalesce into imagistic assemblages of music, movement, text, and design. Interested in expanding ideas around how performance is created and shared, Erika’s work has been performed in city halls, theaters, industrial offices spaces, diners, parking lots and food courts. http://www.erikachongshuch.com/

Ryan Tacata, PhD is a performance maker, educator, and scholar living in San Francisco. He has a BFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (2007) and received his PhD in Performance Studies from Stanford University. His recent work in performance includes Lolas (2017, a performance installation in honor of Filipino grandmothers, Asian Art Museum); For You, (2016–) with Erika Chong Shuch (a series of dedicated performances for audiences of 12); and dancing in Doggie Hamlet (2015–) by Ann Carlson (a site-specific dance with four human performers, sheep herding dogs, and 30+ sheep). He is currently devising an archive-based performative response to Goat Island’s When Will the September Roses Bloom? Last night was only a comedy (commissioned for the company’s upcoming retrospective, goat island archive—we have discovered the performance by making it, Chicago Cultural Center, 2019).
