An Evening with Polish Director Krystian Lupa

at the Martin E. Segal Theatre Center in New York City

Tuesday 3 March 2020

The Martin E. Segal Theatre Center presented the Artist Talk with Krystian Lupa (Poland) livestreamed on the commons-based peer produced HowlRound TV network at howlround.tv on Tuesday 3 March 2020 at 3:30 p.m. PST (San Francisco, UTC-5) / 5:30 p.m. CST (Chicago, UTC-6) / 6:30 p.m. EST (New York, UTC-5).

Join us for an evening exploring the work of Polish theatre director, set designer, playwright, translator and pedagogue Krystian Lupa (born 1943)— one of the greatest European living theatre directors. Lupa studied in Poland physics, graphic design as well as directing for film and theatre. He collaborated with Konrad Swinarski, and was influenced by the works of Tadeusz Kantor. Lupa is famous for his unique method of working with the text and actors in specific “organic way,” often described as “laboratory rehearsals.”

Significant productions are based on texts of Robert Musil, Thomas Bernhard, Fyodor Dostoyevsky, Rainer Maria Rilke, Stanisław Ignacy Witkiewicz or Witold Gombrowicz. Awards include Witkacy Prize - Critics’ Circle Award, Gold Gloria Artis Medal, Order of Polonia Restituta, Ordre des Arts et des Lettres and Austrian Decoration for Science and Art. Jay Wegman, Director of NYU Skirball Center, announced in January 2020 the cancellation of Lupa’s The Trial, based on the Franz Kafka novel, due to the withdrawal of financial support from the Adam Mickiewicz Institute (IAM), the international exchange program of the Polish Ministry of Culture. The production from Nowy Teatr in Cracow (Poland) was scheduled for March 7 and 8, 2020.
