with Ari Afsar, Erin Ortman, Martha Nichols, Jen Bender, and Regina Victor

Thursday 6 August 2020

Playwright Lauren Gunderson presented Arts + Activism: Jeannette and Making Political Musical Theatre livestreamed on the global, commons-based, peer produced HowlRound TV network at howlround.tv on Thursday 6 August 2020 at 12 p.m. PDT (San Francisco, UTC -7) / 2:00 p.m. CDT (Chicago, UTC -5) / 3:00 p.m. EDT (New York, UTC -4).

Composer and Lyricist Ari Afsar, director Erin Ortman, choreographer Martha Nichols, producer Jen Bender and dramaturg Regina Victor will all join Lauren on the anniversary of the Voting Rights Act of 1965 to talk about Their musical Jeannette, making a new political musicals, writing and developing anti-racist theatre, songwriting, book writing, and creating a musical during a pandemic.

Jeannette was developed at the O’Neill National Musical Theatre Conference in 2019 and tells the story of Jeannette Rankin, the first congresswoman in American history elected in 1916. The musical is intentionally cast with (and written for) overwhelming diversity to further unpack the racial reality of women’s suffrage, the 19th Amendment, as well as the continued struggle for voting rights for all across this nation.

Lauren Gunderson is the Playwright-in-Residence at Marin Theatre Company in Mill Valley, CA and through the National Playwright Residency Program, funded by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. Find out more about Lauren's residency experience, and learn about the impact of the program at large.
