Hear some of the most inspiring representatives from a handful of Bay Area arts organizations—including American Conservatory Theater (A.C.T.), Berkeley Repertory Theatre, Cal Shakes, Magic Theatre, SF Opera, and The UC Theatre—to open doors to your career in the performing arts and music industries by learning about paid fellowships and internships.
American Conservatory Theater (A.C.T.)
A.C.T.’s fellowships provide advanced, hands-on educational training and mentorship in theater production and administration. Through exposure to professionals at work, and to the audiences they serve, our fellows learn what drama means to the life of a community, and how the life of a community enriches its theater. A.C.T. fellowships provide a springboard to a professional life in the theater: our fellows have gone on to attend renowned graduate programs, to work in major regional theaters, and to freelance as directors, designers, and stage managers. A.C.T.’s Fellowship applications for the 2019-20 season will go live at the end of January 2019.
Berkeley Repertory Theatre
Berkeley Repertory Theatre offers an 11.5-month fellowship program for serious-minded, highly motivated individuals who are ready to embark upon a professional theatre career. Fellows are directly exposed to the Theatre’s daily operations and given the opportunity to learn alongside an accomplished company of artists, administrators, guest directors and designers. Housing and monthly stipend provided.
The UC Theatre
The UC Theatre's Concert Career Pathways program is a free 9 month on-the-job training program, for young people ages 17-25, in the technical, creative and business aspects of concert and event promotion. The program includes: hands-on workshops, music industry mentorships, paid internships, industry tours, industry partnerships. monthly networking events. peer-to-peer networking, entertainment industry job placement. Applications for the program will be available March 1, 2019.
Z Space
Z Space, based in the Mission District of San Francisco is one of the nation’s leading laboratories for the development of new works. Z Space celebrated its 25th anniversary in 2018, continuing its mission to empower artistic risk, collaboration, and camaraderie amongst artists and audience in the service of commissioning, developing, and producing new work. Z Space offers internships that are ideal for students, recent graduates, and those looking for hands-on experience. Generally, internships are rotational, meaning that each intern works in multiple fields during their time at Z Space, but internships can be tailored to fit an applicant's time commitment and interests. Z Space also offers paid, hourly work for Box Office Managers, House Managers, and Bartenders; applications are accepted on an ongoing basis. Email [email protected] for more information.
Shotgun Players
Shotgun Players’ Make a Difference (M.A.D.) Program offers annual fellowships to early career theater makers. We give many young people their first paycheck in theatre by offering valuable work experience collaborating with and receiving mentorship from professionals from our artistic, administrative, and production teams. M.A.D. fellows have gone on to professional design gigs, continued their educations, and some return to Shotgun as staff! Administrative fellowships (artistic direction, marketing, and production management) begin in early spring and last several months. Administrative fellows are expected to work 25 hours/week during normal office hours, with occasional evening and weekend commitments. These fellowships work well for folks who have recently graduated or are taking a gap year. Design and production fellowships are 5–7-week commitments, totalling around 100 hours, with most of those hours happening during tech and previews, These fellowships work well for current local students, and folks on short breaks from school.
