Join Karishma Bhagani in conversation with Dr. Mshai Mwangola about The Performing Arts Sector in Kenya on Monday 19 April 2021. This is episode 7 of a continuing series, The Stories Women Carry.
Dr. Mshaï Mwangola, is a oraturist / performance scholar who uses the lens of culture in her work as an academic, artist and activist. Her intellectual work is characterised by her practice of performance as a way of making meaning for the purpose of research, pedagogy, policy work and advocacy. She is particularly committed to exploring the world through Story, both on and off-stage.
A member of the Executive Committee of the Council of the Development of Social Science Research in Africa (CODESRIA), she is also co-founded two intellectual platforms: The Elephant.info, a virtual space of ideas; and The Orature Collective (TOC), which engages the public sphere through the arts.
Mwangola serves on the adjunct faculty of the African Leadership Centre (Nairobi). She chairs the board of Uraia Trust, Kenya’s largest non-state facilitator of Civic Education; and serves on the Board of Management of P.J. Mwangola School.
For the three years preceding the onset of the pandemic season, TOC curated the monthly “PointZero Bookcafé, staging literature from all over the world. While waiting for that space to re-open, she has turned to the curation and moderation of several virtual conversation series, including The Corona Cafés, and the Pan African Forums, and the African Book Talk series.
“The Stories Women Carry: Creative Practice of African Women from the Continent”
The Stories Women Carry is a Web Series that highlights the work of African women in different fields of theatre on the continent. The 6-episode season features leading writers, poets, directors, producers and interdisciplinary theatre-makers who will share their artistic practices and methodologies. There is an increase in conversations about non-Western methods of theatre-making across the continent and beyond. In the spirit of uncovering an African dramaturgy and its application in various fields of theatre from the creation of new work to arts management, these leading practitioners from Uganda and Kenya will share their insights in each episode.
Each episode will invite one female guest, or a collective to speak on a specific topic, related to their personal practice. American Sign Language and Kenyan Sign Language interpretation will be available for this series.
