An Evening Remembering the Late Professor of Theatre, Author, and Translator Marion Peter Holt

Monday 15 May 2023

The Martin E. Segal Theatre Center presented Memorial: Marion Peter Holt, livestreaming on the global, commons-based, peer-produced HowlRound TV network on Monday 15 May 2023 at 3:30 p.m. PDT (San Francisco, UTC -7) / 5:30 p.m. CDT (Chicago, UTC -5) / 6:30 p.m. EDT (New York, UTC -4).

Join us for an evening remembering the late professor of theatre, author, and translator Marion Peter Holt, professor emeritus (theatre, Graduate Center, and Spanish, College of Staten Island). Marion helped to spread knowledge of Catalan and Spanish drama throughout the United States and the world.

A professor emeritus of theatre at the Graduate Center of the City University of New York and a member of the Real Academia Española since 1986, he translated into English such major authors as Àngels Aymar, Sergi Belbel, Josep Maria Benet i Jornet, Marta Buchaca, Lluïsa Cunillé, Guillem Clua, and José M. Rodríguez-Mendez. In 1986 he was elected a corresponding member of Spain’s Real Academia Española. Many of the translations were published by the Martin E. Segal Center Publication ring.

Marion was a visiting professor at the Yale School of Drama, Hunter College, and Barcelona’s Institut del Teatre. He held a PhD from University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. His publications include The Contemporary Spanish Theatre: 1949-1972 (1975), Antonio Buero-Vallejo: Three Plays (1985) (a Choice Outstanding University Press selection), DramaContemporary: Spain (1985), and Magical Places: The Story of Spartanburg’s Theatres and Their Entertainments: 1900-1950 (2004). His translations of contemporary Spanish and Catalan plays have been staged in New York and London, in Australia, and by regional and university theatres throughout the United States.

With excerpt readings and other contributions. Organized by Richard Medoff, David Smedley, and Kimberly Ramírez in collaboration with the Segal Theatre Center.
