Celebrate with PYTA as they honor their members and experience the incredible work of this year’s annual conference host, Dreams of Hope! Dreams of Hope’s theatriQ will present an excerpt from their most recent show, Chasing Elevation, along with musical and drag performances from individual ensemble members.

Created and performed by Dreams of Hope’s theatriQ Youth Ensemble, Chasing Elevation provides a science fiction experience through a decidedly queer lens. It is the year 2064 and the earth has succumbed to the inevitable climate apocalypse.  We are floating, dodging storms and barely surviving amidst the chaos of New America. But everything changes when a queer couple find themselves washed up on unfamiliar and jarring territory, forcing them to weather much more than storms.

In addition to the performance, PYTA will be presenting their annual awards to the 2019 winners: Mikayla Reynolds, Theo Meacham, and About Face Youth Theatre.

ABOUT PRIDE YOUTH THEATER ALLIANCE:

Queer Youth Theater offers queer and allied youth safe spaces to creatively express themselves while providing unique methods for representing and empowering queer voices in their community. The Pride Youth Theater Alliance began as a cohort of directors, educators, and activists representing Queer Youth Theater (QYT) programs from across the U.S. and Canada. The alliance was officially founded in 2012 to collectively raise awareness and place institutional unity behind the work of individual QYT programs, the field at large, and the needs of communities where QYT groups exist. The PYTA Conference, an annual convening of leaders from the field, has become a defining component of PYTA’s programmatic activity.

PYTA’S MISSION: The Pride Youth Theater Alliance is a growing network that advances the practice of Queer Youth Theater by providing emerging and established leaders in the field with resources and opportunities to exchange, collaborate, and learn.

ABOUT DREAMS OF HOPE:

Dreams of Hope was founded in 2003 to provide LGBTQA youth with a safe and welcoming environment to grow in confidence, express themselves, and develop as leaders. Their strategy is to mentor young people with professional artists and educators, and, through creative and performing arts, empower them to address and overcome the issues so many LGBTQI youth face. They use the skills and strengths they develop, as well as artistic expression, to educate people, build awareness, and increase acceptance, while assuming leadership positions in their communities. Dreams of Hope operates three programs: a multi-disciplinary, theater arts program (theatriQ), a summer arts camp (Qamp), and a neighborhood open stage performing arts program (speaQ).

DREAMS OF HOPE’S MISSION: Through the power of the arts, Dreams of Hope provides the region’s lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, questioning, asexual, and allied (LGBTQA+) youth a welcoming environment to grow in confidence, express themselves, and develop as leaders. Their creative contributions educate audiences, build awareness, and increase acceptance.
