Playwrights Under the Radar

Literary Managers and Dramaturgs From the United States, Mexico, and Canada Share Twelve Playwrights and Play-Makers Whose Work You Should Know

Thursday 28 July 2022

Literary Managers and Dramaturgs of the Americas presented the conversation Playwrights Under the Radar livestreaming on the commons-based peer-produced HowlRound TV network at howlround.tv on Thursday 28 July 2022 at 9 a.m. PDT (San Francisco, UTC -7) / 11 a.m. CDT (Chicago, UTC -5) / 12 p.m. EDT (New York, UTC -4).

Playwrights Under the Radar is an annual event at the LMDA International Performing Arts Conference. Each year, literary managers and dramaturgs from the United States, Mexico, and Canada share twelve playwrights and play-makers whose work you should know. These are artists who have flown “under the radar”, meaning that they have not yet received national recognition in their own country and so you probably have not yet heard of them. The presenters also share how to contact the artist and how to access the artists’ work. Over the years, “Playwrights” alums have gone on to win the Whiting Award, Smith Prize, Pulitzer Prize, and more. Join us to meet twelve new makers again this year.

For over twenty years, LMDA has been at the forefront of creating connections, building bridges, and supporting the rigorous exchange of ideas across the performing arts in the United States, Mexico, and Canada. While LMDA was originally an organization for literary managers and dramaturgs, it has bloomed into an in-person and virtual platform that supports all dramaturgically-minded performing artists and administrators—no matter how they identify in terms of artistic labels or where they live.

LMDA’s mission with the 2022 groundbreaking gathering is to ignite a global conversation about the impact/purpose/process/evolution of work outside of the traditional “theatre” space. This conference will ask participants to examine how space impacts the dramaturgy of the work and how work lives, breathes, and evolves in different locations. For example, we will be discussing digital theatre, touring shows, cabaret, circus, online performance, outdoor theater, site specific work, burlesque, museum performance, installation performance, and more.

This year, we will be adding ASL interpretation and Spanish translation to our conference. Interpreted and translated sessions will be notated on our Conference App. After you register, make sure to see our Logistics Center in the Conference App for more accessibility resources.
