Call For Proposals: Latinx Theatre Commons Programming 2024-2027

The Latinx Theatre Commons (LTC) is seeking pitches for our next cycle of programming, which runs November 2024 through June 2027. Over the past 10 years, the LTC has produced thirteen convenings for regional, national, and international cohorts of participants, published a book, and archived our work and shared learnings through HowlRound Theatre Commons.

The LTC has always been an open movement for Latinx and allied theatre practitioners of all stripes to come together, gather resources, and put those resources towards radical actions that cultivate, celebrate, and challenge our community. We try to be as decentralized as possible and spread the power that comes with access to foundation funding, relationships with gatekeepers, and name recognition. The exact number of people “in” the LTC is hard to track; there are no dues or membership pledges. If you want to be in the Commons, you’re in. And once you’re in, we simply ask that you change your approach from, “Look at what they’re doing!” to, “What can we do better?”

And that’s why we come to you. The submission process is open to everyone in our growing community. We welcome the strongest, most radical ideas. We’re intentionally asking for ideas, not proposals, though we are open to fully developed proposals. We hope that through your ideas, we can continue collaborating across geography and across traditional "roles" in the theatre to fill in the gaps, to create opportunities, and to cultivate and unearth the wealth and abundance of our community.

What is an LTC Partner?

LTC Partners are often organizations and/or institutions that provide us with resources and collaboration. The LTC is a movement, not an organization and we do not have our own physical space. Our partners often provide us with space, supplemental staff, and help us activate the local community where the event is taking place. They are also someone we have an existing relationship with, are located in the city of the event, align with our values, and are interested in the work we are doing. In turn, the LTC amplifies the work of our partner organizations and strives to bring national attention to the amazing work that they do in the regions we visit.

What is the difference between a public facing and internal event?

A public facing event is an event that is open to the public. Registration may be limited but it is not required to be a committee member of the LTC to attend and there is no application or selection process for participants. One recent example would be Comedy Carnaval. All play readings, panels, and plenaries are also live streamed via HowlRound TV.

An internal event is an event that requires an application to participate or is designed only for a specific group such as the steering and advisory committees. One example would be the Designer and Director Colaboratorio. While this event was open for anyone to apply (whether an LTC committee member or not), it only had 40 participants and was not live streamed.

You can propose an event that is both/hybrid. It could have components that are external and internal. For example, the Colaboratorio had a forum of local Latinx Portland artists on its last day which made that day an external event.

Do I have to be an LTC Steering or Advisory Committee member to submit a pitch?

No. Anyone in the community who has an idea that reflects our mission and values is encouraged to submit a pitch.

What is an LTC Pitch?

An LTC Pitch is the first of two steps to proposing a new project/initiative for the Latinx Theatre Commons. We are looking at a wide range of possible initiatives, including in-person gatherings/convenings, publications, trainings, and other projects with regional, national, or international impact. We are encouraging all potential partners to think expansively and outside the box. Do not worry about whether the "format" of your idea fits the LTC; instead, focus on why the LTC should be the group to carry your idea forward. You may submit multiple ideas, and you do not need to be an LTC Steering Committee member to submit.

¿Qué es una propuesta/Elevator Pitch para el LTC?

Una Elevator Pitch/propuesta del LTC es el primero de dos pasos para iniciar o proponer un nuevo proyecto/iniciativa para el Latinx Theatre Commons. Solicitamos una amplia gama de posibles iniciativas, incluyendo reuniones/convocatorias en persona, publicaciones, capacitaciones y otros proyectos con impacto regional, nacional o internacional. What is the second step?

The LTC New Programming Committee will review all pitches and request a full application from pitches selected to move forward.

Are there specific dates you are looking for projects to take place within?

Projects that run within the following timeline will be considered: November 2024-June 2027. Please note that projects do not need to run this entire time, but must not "open" before November 2024 and must be completed by June 2027.

When is my pitch due and when will I hear back?

Please complete the pitch form by Monday, October 9 at 11:00pm PDT. You will be notified by Tuesday, November 14 if your pitch is moving forward to the next round of consideration. If so, you will be invited to complete the full application. Full applications are due by Wednesday, December 20. The full LTC Steering Committee will review these applications in January 2024, and will contact you in late February with next steps.
