No Summary returns with Shahrazad Squad, a project created and directed by producer Raeshma Razvi in collaboration with theatre company Cal Shakes and Squad members. Golden Thread invites Zeina Salame (artist-scholar-educator) to moderate a conversation with Raeshma Razvi and Leila Buck (playwright, performer, facilitator, educator) about this project which gathers MENASA women/non-binary creatives, cultural producers, and changemakers in person and online to share stories and diasporic experiences, showcase creative work and leadership, and nurture joy, belonging and healing in our communities and beyond.

Panelists

Raeshma Razvi produces transformative community art and film. Her current interest lies in interpreting literary classics across cultures, genre or community praxis. In collaboration with theatre company Cal Shakes, she is producing the Shahrazad Squad, a project that facilitates conversations and community amongst MENASA women creatives and changemakers, and amplifies their voices through unique content. She is also writing a contemporary screen adaptation of The Count of Monte Cristo. Raeshma holds a BA in comparative literature from Northwestern University and an MFA in film/video production from Columbia College

Leila Buck has performed and taught theatrical tools to youth, educators, aid workers & UN delegates across the United States and seventeen countries, and teaches creation and representation in United States theatre at NYU. Her plays include American Dreams (Cleveland Public Theater, Working Theater, Round House, Marin Theatre; Drama League nominee); In the Crossing (Public Theater, Culture Project, NYTW); American Dreams & Arabian Nights (NYTW, BRIC Lab) and Hkeelee: Talk to Me (Mosaic Theater at Arena Stage). Current commissions: 1001 Nights (A Retelling)–Cal Shakes, co-written with dir. Facilitator

Zeina Salame is a postdoctoral fellow on faculty at the University of Vermont with a PhD in theatre arts from the University of Oregon. Her dissertation, “Carried In One Woman—Reflections on Arab American Female Solo Performance”' centers on themes of “home” and the creative value of embodied generational knowledge, heritage, and intersectionality in performance aesthetics. Published writings focus on MENA/SWANA theatre and feminisms. Creative practice as a director, performer, storyteller, facilitator, and applied theatre practitioner include engagements with arts, educational, and social justice organizations nationwide. She is also co-founder of theatre company, The 5 & Dime.
