Hunter College Dance Festival Spring 2020

presented by Hunter College Dance

Saturday 9 May 2020

CultureHub and Hunter College Dance presented Hunter College Dance Festival Spring 2020 livestreamed on the global, commons-based, peer-produced HowlRound TV network at howlround.tv on Saturday 9 May 2020 at 4:30 p.m. PDT (San Francisco, UTC-7) / 6:30 p.m. CDT (Chicago, UTC-5) / 7:30 p.m. EDT (New York, UTC-4).

We invite you to join us at this online, both live stream and pre-recorded series of dances, dancers, and choreographers from the BA, MA (AGDEP) and MFA degree programs presenting selected works and final projects from their dance classes this semester. In January the students registered for these courses with an expectation of outcomes which have all had to be radically adjusted.

Along with several dance faculty and numerous students we are taking this as an opportunity to showcase the vibrancy and robust, energetic passion of a diverse group of teachers, artists and students working in New York City in the 21st century. Caught in the maelstrom of a global pandemic, we still strive for excellence, joy and the deep communal offering that is dance at Hunter College. Despite the loss of our physical campus, Hunter College Dance did what dancers do, we deftly leapt onto the next stage. Showcasing both mental and physical agility, the department has charged forward with its well-known resourcefulness by mobilizing available technologies to support choreographic traditions of for-the-camera and site-specific works with hearty zeal. The Festival offers a real-time glimpse into a historic moment and the beauty of a chorus of moving images, bodies, and sound. If ever the care of the future was truly ours, it is now and we hope you will join us in seeding hope and resiliency for the next generation.

Livestream Production with CultureHub, powered by LiveLab with performances from the Bronx to Brooklyn including BA Dance Major Julieta Rodriguez-Cruz, CUNY BA Vienna I.R.C., MFAs Kathryn Alter and Colin Stilwell and Hunter Dance Faculty (and Nikolais/Louis Artistic Director) Alberto Del Saz, as well as selected short videos from students.

Partnering with former Hunter Dance Faculty member Billy Clark and the entire CultureHub team, powered by LiveLab has allowed Hunter Dance to explore the new frontier of an entirely remotely produced live dance concert. Seemingly built out of a Kurt Vonnegut universe, these live stream works offer a transcendence from the domestic to the fantastic. Living rooms become concert halls become ethereal planes, roommates become crewmates and someone’s cat or dog might make a cameo. Please tune in and celebrate the fierce resolve that is New York dancing.
