Rad Adaptation (Radaptation?) with Octavio Solis and Kate Hamill

with playwright Lauren Gunderson

Thursday 27 August 2020

Playwright Lauren Gunderson presented Rad Adaptation (Radaptation?) with Octavio Solis and Kate Hamill livestreamed on the global, commons-based, peer produced HowlRound TV network at howlround.tv on Thursday 27 August 2020 at 12 p.m. PDT (San Francisco, UTC -7) / 2:00 p.m. CDT (Chicago, UTC -5) / 3:00 p.m. EDT (New York, UTC -4).

Let's talk about adapting classics to the stage with two of my favorite writers: Kate Hamill (Sense and Sensibility) and Octavio Solis (Quixote Nuevo). We'll discuss the process of deciding which classic to adapt, how to dramatize a novel, and how to add your spin on beloved stories and characters.

Author of over 20 plays, OCTAVIO SOLIS is considered by many to be one of the most prominent Latino playwrights in America. With works that both draw on and transcend the Mexican-American experience, he is a writer and director whose style defies formula, examining the darkness, magic and humor of humanity with brutal honesty and characteristic intensity. His imaginative and ever-evolving work continues to cross cultural and aesthetic boundaries, solidifying him as one of the great playwrights of our time. Visit his website.

Originally from the farms and fields of upstate New York, KATE HAMILL is an award-winning NYC-based actor/playwright. She still knows how to milk a cow - albeit not well (both she and the cow get verrry nervous). She is deeply passionate about creating new feminist, female-centered classics: stories that center around complicated women. Her work as a playwright celebrates theatricality, often features absurdity, and closely examines social and gender issues - as well as the timeless struggle to reconcile conscience / identity with social pressures. Lauren Gunderson is the Playwright-in-Residence at Marin Theatre Company in Mill Valley, CA and through the National Playwright Residency Program, funded by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. Find out more about Lauren's residency experience, and learn about the impact of the program at large.
