dunaPart—an initiative of Trafó House of Contemporary Arts in Budapest—presented the conversation The (self-)representation of Romas on stage - trends and challenges in today’s Hungary livestreamed on the global, commons-based peer produced HowlRound TV network at howlround.tv Saturday 30 November 2019 at 8 a.m. PST (Los Angeles, UTC -8) / 11 a.m. EST (New York, UTC -5) / 16:00 GMT (London, UTC +0) / 17:00 CET (Budapest, UTC +1) / 18:00 EET (Bucharest, UTC +2).

According to the definition of contact zone "it is a space for social classes, togetherness in time and space, where (representatives of) cultures in asymmetric relations or in a hierarchical system can meet". For such reasons can theatre be a field for both representation and self-representation, where oppressed and minority voices can speak up, where social roles can break out of the grasp of stereotypes. But is there a kind of contact zone in today's Hungary which really gives the possibility for the reinterpretation of these positions? In a professional environment what is the biggest ethnic minority's, the gypsy's, representation on stage? What are the challenges for a creator if one wants to speak "of them", and what if the creator stand up for his/her own representation? Anyways: how sharp is the line between the "you" and "us" and what can theatre do in order to vanish it?

dunaPart – Platform in Hungary is an initiative of Trafó House of Contemporary Arts in Budapest. dunaPart is organized biannually presenting the most interesting productions and initiatives from the independent theatre and dance field from Hungary. The selection is done by Hungarian dance and theatre critiques and professionals. Theatre and dance programs run parallel in the four days presenting 30 performances all in all.

Our objective is to present the outstanding representatives and the upcoming new generation of the independent Hungarian performing arts scene, to help them and the whole field in their further integration in the international professional network. Furthermore, our ambition is to offer a platform to the Hungarian independent field to internationalize their work, to seek new opportunities for collaboration to be able to work in a more diverse context.

dunaPart is realized with the partnership of many other Budapest-based hosting venues and organizations.
