Radio Theatre Project, including USF School of Theatre and Dance and sponsored by WMNF and the Studio@620, presented a reading of playwright Marcus Gardley’s work the rocks are gonna cry out livestreamed on the global, commons-based peer-produced HowlRound TV network at howlround.tv on Monday 18 February 2013 at 3:30 p.m. PST (San Francisco) / 5:30 p.m. CST (Chicago) / 6:30 p.m. EST (New York) / 23:30 GMT (London).

This livestreaming event began with unstructured conversations with the playwright prior to reading the play by local Tampa actors of the first act of the rocks are gonna cry out.

Francisco Menendez by Bob Devin Jones, and The Continuing Adventures of Noel Berlin, Cabaret Detective, by Matt Cowley and Paul Wilborn are also on tap that night on the Radio Theatre Project.

the rocks are gonna cry out is the first installment in a trilogy about the migration of Black Seminoles (African and Native People) from Florida to Oklahoma. The play takes place in 1820s and 1830s Florida and traces the beginnings of a community that will be forced to migrate northwest to eventually settle in Wewoka, OK. At its core, the play explores spirituality, sexuality, and sacred stories within a group of people whose faith and identity are about to be put to the test.

 

 

Francisco Menendez is the remarkable story of the former slave, who escapes from British Carolina to Spanish Florida in the 18th Century and how he becomes the Commander of Fort Moses, the first settlement of freed peoples in North America. The script is written and performed by Bob Devin Jones. Lisa Powers Triconi, Director. Bob Devin Jones, is a writer, director, actor, and Co-Founder and Artistic Director of Studio@620. Several of Jones’ scripts have been performed by the Radio Theatre Project.

The Continuing Adventures of Noel Berlin, Cabaret Detective is the fourth in a continuing series written especially for the RTP Live! Ensemble by Paul Wilborn and Matt Cowley. This new series features the Ensemble members in cliff hanger episodes with cabaret music and stunning sound effects. Don’t miss a single month! Ron Satlof, Director. Paul Wilborn is Artistic Director of The Palladium and RTP Live! Ensemble member. Matt Cowley is WMNF -88.5 FM Web Manager, producer of Soundstage Audio Theatre and RTP Live!’s Foley master. Both Foley and Wilborn’s plays have been performed by Radio Theatre Project.

The Radio Theatre Project is a co-production of The Studio@620 and WMNF Community Radio and is funded in part by a grant from the Florida Humanities Council. The Project presents six live radio theatre shows throughout the year, with an emphasis on Florida writers and themes.

the rocks are gonna cry out reading event is the start of a year-long journey for the USF School of Theatre and Dance culminating in the Spring 2014 production of the second play in this beautiful trilogy the road weeps, the well runs dry. In conjunction with the Lark Play Development Center, Perseverance Theatre, the Pillsbury House Theatre, and The Los Angeles Theatre Center, USF will present this provocative and engaging play about the migration of Black Seminoles (African and Native American people) from Florida to Wewoka, Oklahoma—the first incorporated all black town.

Led by the Lark Play Development Center, this journey is part of Launching New Plays into the Repertoire, an initiative supporting the advancement of vital stories to stages nationally and globally with support from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation and The Nathan Cummings Foundation.
