Marius von Mayenburg (Germany) is an author, director, dramaturg, and translator. Born in Munich, he studied scenic writing at the Arts Academy Berlin. Early on, he was part of the team with Thomas Ostermeier at the Deutsches Theater-Baracke in Berlin, which went on to lead the Schaubühne Berlin. There he worked as dramaturg and writer in residence. His plays (The Ugly One, Fireface, A Piece of Plastic, etc.) are translated into more than fifteen languages, successfully performed worldwide, and have won several awards. He has translated numerous English language plays into German. Among them are classics, including works by William Shakespeare (Hamlet, Richard III, Macbeth, Romeo and Juliet, etc.) and Oscar Wilde, as well as contemporary plays by writers such as Martin Crimp, Alan Ayckbourn, and Sarah Kane, among others.

Marius’s play Nachtland was originally commissioned by the Royal Court Theater in London and received its world premiere at the Schaubühne Berlin in 2022. It was subsequently produced at the Young Vic in London.

His most recent trilogy consists of the plays Ex, Ellen Babić, and Egal. Ex premiered in 2021 at the Rikstheatre in Stockholm, Sweden. The German Premiere of Ellen Babić was produced  at the Berliner Ensemble in 2024 and in 2025; Ellen Babić and Egal will be produced at the Burgtheater in Vienna.

As a director, Marius von Mayenburg has worked at the Schaubühne Berlin, Residenztheater Munich, Schauspiel Frankfurt, Riksteater Stockholm, Nationaltheater Oslo, among many others.
