Friday 20 November 2020

Art2Action and Pangea World Theater present the 2020 National Institute for Directing & Ensemble Creation livestreaming on the global, commons-based, peer produced HowlRound TV network at howlround.tv from Friday 20 November to Sunday 22 November.

Friday 20 November

Welcome to #NIDEC2020: Virtual Weekend
2 p.m. PST (San Francisco, UTC -8) / 4 p.m. CST (Chicago, UTC -6) / 5 p.m. EST (New York, UTC -5)
Join us for a welcome hour to kick off our Virtual Institute Weekend! This session will include grounding with Sharon Day, an honoring of artistic ancestors, and an introduction to the history and context of the National Institute for Directing & Ensemble Creation by Pangea World Theatre and Art2Action co-directors, Meena Natarajan, Dipankar Mukherjee, and Andrea Assaf. Get ready, get connected, get inspired for the weekend!

Equity in Ensemble & Collaboration
4 p.m. PST (San Francisco, UTC -8) / 6 p.m. CST (Chicago, UTC -6) / 7 p.m. EST (New York, UTC -5)
Moderated by Linda Parris-Bailey
Panelists: Keryl McCord, Nobuko Miyamoto, Sharon Day, Adelina Anthony
In recent years, the Institute has begun to include Racial Equity and Indigeneity trainings as part of our intensive process. As a program that has always centered artists of color, women and LGBTQ2+ artists, we found that when we come together across our communities, we still need to develop a shared analysis, language and understanding in order to collaborate equitably, support each other, and to build collective power. Join us for a panel reflection on this journey, and what we have learned.

Saturday 21 November

Morning Movement with Dora Arreola
9:30 a.m. PST (San Francisco, UTC -8) / 11:30 a.m. CST (Chicago, UTC -6) / 12:30 p.m. EST (New York, UTC -5)
At the Institute, we always begin the day’s process in our bodies, in creative movement together. (It may be morning, depending on your time zone!) Movement Theatre artist, director and teacher, Dora Arreola of Mujeres en Ritual Danza-Teatro leads our first daily movement on Saturday.

Master Class with Sharon Bridgforth
11 a.m. PST (San Francisco, UTC -8) / 1 p.m. CST (Chicago, UTC -6) / 2 p.m. EST (New York, UTC -5)
Sharon will offer participants a series of prompts rooted in some of the principles of theatrical jazz—the art of being present, deep listening, improvisation, innovation, virtuosity and ensemble-building. During our time together participants will write and collaboratively share work centered in the excavation/examination and sharing of personal stories-memories-Dreams-family histories-cultures and traditions. We do this knowing that art and Life are not separate . . . and that in focusing on strengthening our artistic voice and intentions - we can create the work/and the world that we most passionately envision.

#NIDEC2020 Open Mic
6 p.m. PST (San Francisco, UTC -8) / 8 p.m. CST (Chicago, UTC -6) / 9 p.m. EST (New York, UTC -5)
Join co-hosts Andresia “Real” Moseley and Keila Anali Saucedo, for a special evening showcasing the talents of our Institute community!

Sunday 22 November

Morning Movement with Sandra Agustin
9:30 a.m. PST (San Francisco, UTC -8) / 11:30 a.m. CST (Chicago, UTC -6) / 12:30 p.m. EST (New York, UTC -5)

Look through your responses to the prompts that were offered earlier and find a story or a nugget that you want to follow. Find something in there and make a short bit out of it. You don't have much time so it will probably be a couple of sentences.

What is the thing you are afraid to do — that you need to do — in order to do your work more fully?

What are some of the elements of storytelling that are part of your inheritance? That you use in your work right now?

What is your aesthetic? Take a moment to name your aesthetic — expansively. This is not about boxing. Make sure you note a little bit about what it is rooted in. What shapes and informs it?

Master Class Featuring Sharon Bridgforth

Prompt 1: Breathe into whoever feels most with you right now, thinking of ancestors, knowing that there are no veils, that the living and the dead coexist. Who of light and progress is most with you in the moment? What is one thing they said to you or are saying to you that resonates deeply? Pick one person and write down one thing that is really with you that they have shared with you and then take a moment and write the story of that. What is the story of that?

A Doris Duke Performing Artist, Sharon Bridgforth is a writer that creates ritual/jazz theatre. A 2020-2023 Playwrights’ Center Core Member, Sharon has received support from Creative Capital, MAP Fund, the National Performance Network and is a New Dramatists alumnae. Sharon has served as a dramaturg for the Urban Bush Women Choreographic Center Initiative’s Choreographic Fellowship program and has been in residence with: the NoVo Foundation; Thousand Currents; Brown University’s MFA Playwriting Program; University of Iowa’s MFA Playwrights Program; The Theatre School at DePaul University; allgo, A Texas Statewide QPOC Organization; and The Department of Performance Studies at Northwestern University. Widely published, Sharon is Executive Producer and Host of the Who Yo People Is podcast series.

Excited to be online with Pangea World Theater and Art2Action for the 2020 Directing Institute! Thank you Sharon, for your strong, necessary words.
