Last October, José Luis Valenzuela and Chantal Rodriguez wrote about plans for a festival—an encuentro (encounter)—at the Los Angeles Theatre Center (LATC) in Fall 2014. The LATC Encuentro: A Festival of National Latina/o Theatre will be held October 12-November 10 2014 and will feature ten companies from around the country, presenting their work in repertory  over the course of the Festival. During the day, the companies will work together to share artistic practice and methodology which will culminate the final weekend of the Festival with public performance(s) of the co-created new work.

Primary questions the Encuentro will explore include:

How do the festival offerings reflect and/or challenge the history and scope of Latina/o work around the country?
How does this work illuminate the breadth of the Latina/o experience?
What do these productions collectively say about contemporary Latina/o theater aesthetic(s)?

The LATC, in association with the LTC is seeking companies to perform as part of the Festival. It is an open application process—anyone may apply and all applications will be evaluated by a selection committee made up of LTC members from around the country. Applications are due by April 1, 2014. Download the guidelines and full application here. Direct any queries or questions about the application process to Chantal Rodriguez at [email protected]

ABOUT THE LTC & CAFÉ ONDA
As an Associate Producer of the LATC Encuentro, The Latina/o Theatre Commons (LTC) is creating opportunities—tertulia (social gatherings focused on art) events—post shows, panels, roundtable discussions, and a national gathering to foster dialogue and engagement around art-making and aesthetics throughout the Encuentro. Members of the LTC are also serving as the Encuentro selection committee.

The Latina/o Theatre Commons (LTC) is a movement made up of passionate, articulate, driven Latina/o theater artists, producers, and scholars from across the country. The LTC advocates for Latina/o theater as a vital, significant presence in the not-for-profit theater sector. Infrastructure for the LTC is provided by HowlRound: A Center for the Theater Commons. We are a think tank, a lobbying network, and a resource for the field and for each other.  We create and produce nationally recognized events and publish regular online content via Café Onda. All that we do seeks to celebrate our diverse connections, to honor our past with reflection, and to envision our future with optimism and enthusiasm.
