This year, the celebration's theme is "Let us be dissatisfied...and transform dark yesterdays into bright tomorrows," from Dr. King's 1967 speech "Where Do We Go from Here."

The keynote will be delivered by the Oregon Shakespeare Festival’s ensemble in residence, UNIVERSES. These vibrant performers and activist actors are renowned for their unique style of theater, a blend of poetry, theatre, jazz, hip-hop, politics, blues, and bolero rhythms. Founded in New York in 1995, the group moved through the urban poetry and music scene to create a unique space for themselves in American Theatre. The core group is made up of Steven Sapp, Mildred Ruiz-Sapp, William "Ninja" Ruiz, and Gamal Chasten.

Speakers from the Vision Quilt project will share their work and goals. The Vision Quilt is an Ashland-based grassroots organization that uses quilt art to foster awareness and conversations around gun violence with exhibitions and workshops throughout the country.

This is a true community event with participants from the Ashland School District, Oregon Shakespeare Festival company members, Southern Oregon University students, families, and individuals. There will be performances by OSF company actors, Ashland Dance Works, Rogue World Ensemble, Brent Florendo and Dancing Spirit Talking Drum, the SOU Slam Team, Phoenix Sigalove, Luminaries, the Ashland Middle School Video Project, Crater Renaissance Rhythm Nation and more. Historian D.L. Richardson will emcee the celebration. The event and online simulcast are sign-language interpreted.

It was so great being able to share this event online here at Howlround. So far 90 people watched from the second venue and 50 watched online during the event. Universes keynote was moving and musical! The acts were just great. Our community fills me with civic pride.
